Bearing Capacity from SPTThe SPT is widely used to obtain the bearing capacity of soils directly. One of the earliest published relationships was that of Terzaghi and Peck (1967). This has been widely used,but an accumulation of field observations has shown these curves to be overly conservative.Meyerhof (1956, 1974) published equations for computing the allowable bearing capacity for a 25-mm settlement. These could be used to produce curves similar to those ofTerzaghi and Peck and thus were also very conservative. Considering the accumulation of field obser-vations and the stated opinions of the authors and others, this author adjusted the Meyerhof equations for an approximate 50 percent increase in allowable bearing capacity to obtain the following:

Foundation SettlementThe settlement of individual foundations due to consolidation of underlying clay soils will depend upon foundationsize, shape, depth and magnitude of the applied load. The proximity of adjacent foundation will influence the settlement experienced by foundation in a group.Computations were made to estimate settlements for square footings of various width (B) and length width ratios(L/B), for a range of applied net bearing pressures, which included beareng pressures, caused the dead loadplus operating live loads, but are less than the maximum allowable net bearing pressure. The foundation were assumed to be placed at depth of 1.0 m below plant elevation. For these analysis used long term consoliation afterTerzaghi and Elastic Settlement Based on The Theory of Elasticity.

The maximum allowable of settlement is 25.4 cm (1 inch).Total of settlement is calculated as follow :
