ABSENCES If children are going to be absent from school for a lengthy period of time, e.g. for surgery or a holiday, the school should be notified in advance with a letter to the Principal confirming relevant dates. When children are absent for a short time, a written explanation upon the child's return is required for legal purposes. There is no need to call the school office. If children need to leave school or arrive late during class time, parents and students must report to the school office to sign the book. There is no need to phone the school office unless your child is going to be away for more than two days.

ACCIDENT/ILLNESS AT SCHOOL If children become ill or are injured at school, parents will be notified. If parents are unavailable, medical attention will be secured by the Principal, if considered necessary. When children are ill during the school day they will be supervised in the Sick Bay. When collecting a child from the Sick Bay, parents are asked to report to the school office first.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE AND BEFORE SCHOOL CARE After School Care is run by an outsourced provider service which provides quality care for children attending Beaumont Road Public School. The centre provides care before school, after school and during school holidays, in its own classroom within the school.

The Centre’s program is designed to meet the range of ages and needs of children who attend, from Kindergarten to Year 6, and includes craft, sport, games and theme days. Children and parents are encouraged to make suggestions. The centre is open Before School between 7.00am and 8.45am

After School between 3.00pm and 6.00pm School Holidays between 7.30am and 6.00pm

An information sheet and registration form are available from the centre. Fee relief is available for families on a low income and childcare receipts are provided. While the service has been designed to provide quality care for children of working parents, all children in the school are welcome to attend. For more information contact the Coordinator on 9498 6855 or 0414 330 217. Please contact the committee chairperson if you would like to become involved in the management of the centre.

BAND PROGRAM Our school’s Band Program has existed since 1961. It provides children with an opportunity to learn an instrument, to work as a team – which helps the children realise how important each person’s individual contribution is to the whole group’s performance – and to enjoy making music. Our approach is to provide encouragement and to acknowledge improvement and effort so that children have a positive learning experience. Our bands have participated successfully in external competitions and perform regularly at school assemblies and functions. Children in Years 4 to 6 may join the Band Program. From Year 4, children are invited to join the Training Band. No previous experience or any musical knowledge is necessary. An instrument is selected for each child with input from the conductor and parents. Training Band members attend a weekly lesson in small groups after school and two weekly band rehearsals before school. The school Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) organises the band through its Band Committee. The P&C employs the band conductor and music tutors and purchases music, instruments and equipment. Members of the Training Band and Ensemble pay an annual fee for tuition, instrument hire and conductors’ fees. Band bags can be ordered from the uniform shop.

BULLETIN The school distributes a fortnightly newsletter to each family. Parents are asked to set aside some time to read through the Bulletin which provides important information on future events and topics of interest. The Bulletin is also available on the school’s website http://www.beaumontrd-p.schools.nsw.edu.au. Contributions to the Bulletin are needed in the Office by Tuesday mornings, even weeks of term.

BUS TRAVEL The Shorelink Bus 565 delivers children to Beaumont Road Public School, departing Lindfield station at 8.31 am, arriving at Beaumont Road at 8.45 am. CALENDAR Each term parents are issued with a term calendar which identifies important school dates and happenings. Parents are asked to display the calendar somewhere at home to help keep up to date with school events.

CANTEEN The school canteen is open five days a week at morning tea and lunch. It offers sandwiches, hot lunches, snacks, drinks and frozen treats. The canteen menu is reviewed and updated regularly. The menu is available online and also distributed with the school bulletin at the start of each term. You can place lunch orders online quickly using our online ordering system, Flexischools. The payment is also done online, so less cash and fewer paper bags, cheques and envelopes are sent with your child to school. Online canteen orders are convenient for parents and much faster and easier for our canteen staff to process. Getting online is easy and only takes a few

minutes to register. Simply go to www.flexischools.com.au and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. The canteen is operated by the school Parents and Citizens Association (P&C). A canteen coordinator orders food, plans menus and keeps the canteen operating successfully. Canteen staff are employed on a part-time basis to prepare the lunch orders, helped by volunteers from the parent community. Children enjoy an occasional treat from the canteen and the canteen gives parents a break from making lunches every day. Class monitors collect the lunch orders and distribute them to the children in their class. Children can also buy snacks from the canteen at morning tea and lunch. Take the opportunity to place an online order each week and help keep our canteen financially viable. Each term, we seek volunteers from the parent community to help the canteen staff prepare sandwiches and hot lunches and serve children at recess and lunch. Please contact [email protected] if you would like to volunteer for the canteen roster.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS Please notify the school of change of address or contact phone number as soon as possible. A letter to the office will assist in keeping records up to date.

COMPUTERS Technology education is an important and well-resourced feature of the school. Computers and InterWrite Boards are in the library and each classroom.

CLASS CAPTAINS Each term, two students in each class are selected as class captains. Captains are presented with special badges at the School Assembly on the second Monday of the term. Parents are invited to attend. Captains are asked to return badges at the end of term.

CLASS PARENTS Each year, two class parent volunteers are identified. These parents are contact people for new families moving into the area, plan opportunities for social interaction, help teachers organise materials and assist the P & C in fundraising.

CLASS ORGANISATION Classes are organised on a mixed ability basis. From time to time composite classes are formed.

CLASS PROGRAM ENRICHMENT Extension and enrichment activities are offered in many areas - academic, sporting and cultural - and may include: The Australian Schools English, Mathematics, Computer, Writing and Science Competitions, organised by the University of NSW, offered to all students in Years 3-6. HOMEWORK The purpose of homework is:

- to consolidate work done in class - to gradually prepare children for the study habits they will have to acquire in secondary

school - to teach children to organise their leisure time around other responsibilities.

The process of doing homework is just as important as the product. As children get older, they should be encouraged to organise themselves so that there is time for play, sport, ballet, music, clubs, T.V. etc. as well as time set aside specifically for homework. Homework should be done in a quiet place. If a student experiences difficulty with homework, a short note drawing this to the teacher’s attention is appreciated. The amount and format of homework will vary from grade to grade. Teachers will outline their expectations regarding homework early in the year. Copies of the school’s Homework Policy are available from the school office.

HOUSES Fidden Yellow and green Fuller Blue and white Horwood Red and white

House Captains and Vice Captains are elected at the beginning of each year.

PARENT PARTICIPATION Education is most effective when it is seen as a responsibility shared between the home and the school. Research shows that student achievement in all areas is greatly enhanced by parent participation. Parents are encouraged to participate where possible. At Beaumont Road we aim to:

* maintain effective communication between home and school

* encourage parents to participate in the planning and operation of the school

* build a positive image of the school in the community

* enrich the resources available to the school by drawing upon those of the community. Parents are also invited to participate in school programs. From time to time, teachers will request assistance in running class programs such as:

Physical Education

Talented children

Mathematics

Reading

Excursions

Sport

Writing

Visual Arts

Cultural programs

PARENT / TEACHER EVENING In Term 1, a Parent / Teacher Evening is held, during which teachers outline their expectations for the year, explain routines and make initial contact with parents. This meeting is not designed to discuss individual student progress but rather to establish parent / teacher communication.

PARENT / TEACHER RELATIONSHIP Teachers develop relationships with parents/guardians because:

. parents / guardians know their young children best

. the knowledge of parents/guardians can assist teachers to a better understanding of the children, and thus to more effective programming for individuals

. parents / guardians are the children's first and most influential teachers

. children's attitudes to school are strongly influenced by parental attitudes

. parents / guardians have a right to be informed about and involved in their children's education

. parents' / guardians' attitudes to the school and support of its programs will be enhanced when based on knowledge and understanding

. parents / guardians need to be acknowledged as equal partners in the learning process

. parents / guardians can support and enrich classroom programs

. when parents / guardians and teachers work together educational outcomes are enhanced.

18

PARENTS AND CITIZENS ASSOCIATION (P&C) The school has an active Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) that supports the school’s goal of providing “a quality education in an outstanding learning environment”. The BRPS P&C roles are to:

Promote the interests of the school by bringing parents, community members, students and school staff together

Assist with the provision of facilities and equipment for the school and in supporting the welfare of students at the school

Provide parents and carers with the opportunity to participate in and contribute to the activities and development of the school

Ensure it contributes to decisions at the school, including representation on selection panels for school staff

We have goals and objectives under these role. You can find our goals and objectives on the P&C section of the school website. The P&C committee meets once a term and holds an Annual General Meeting once a year, normally in term 1. The school’s Beaumont Bulletin always contains a section written by the P&C so that you know what has happened in the past and what our future plans are. We welcome people getting more involved in our P&C. Some of the services we run – the band program, the canteen, the uniform shop – are described in other sections of this school handbook. If you want to know more about what we do and what you can do, please come to a meeting or contact [email protected]

PHOTOS School photos are arranged once a year. Class, individual and other school groups are taken.

PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION Teachers are rostered for playground duty before school, at recess and at lunchtime. Students are requested to report any difficulties they may encounter in the playground to the teachers-on-duty.

Students may use the fixed playground equipment only when a teacher is supervising the immediate area.

PRACTISING STUDENT TEACHERS Beaumont Road Public School enjoys good relationships with teacher training institutions such as University of Technology, Ku-Ring-Gai Campus and other universities. Students from these institutions are provided with practice teaching opportunities during the year. Trainee students bring new ideas, energy and enthusiasm. At the same time Beaumont Road teachers assist with management, organisation and curriculum knowledge.

19

PREFECTS Prefects for the following year are elected from Year 5 students during Term 4. Prefects are issued with a badge, which they should wear at all times. The role of prefect is a positive one. Duties include: * setting an example to other students in terms of dress and behaviour * providing peer support/pastoral care for younger pupils K - 5 * being alert to examples of citizenship displayed by other students in the school * help conducting School Assemblies during the term * assisting at official functions involving visitors to the school * other duties which may be required from time to time, which will give them

opportunities to develop their leadership skills.

Student Led Reporting in Term 3

mid-year report at end of Term 2

end of year report

Parental permission is sought prior to the Counsellor working with the child. Parents may make an appointment with the School Counsellor through the school office.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAYS School Development Days are held 5 times a year - the first day of Terms 1, 2 and 3 and last two days of year after the children have completed the year. These days are for school planning and the professional development of staff. To allow for maximum staff participation, parents are encouraged to find alternative supervisory/care arrangements for their children for these 3 days during the year. TRANSFERS Children transferring from one public school to another need to obtain a Transfer Certificate. Students transferring from Beaumont Road need to collect a Transfer Certificate from the school office on their last day.

UNIFORM SHOP The uniform shop stocks the approved school uniform items: girls’ summer and winter uniforms, boys’ and girls’ sports uniforms, a variety of school bags, school hats and uniform accessories. Students must wear a school hat during outdoor activities as the school has a “no hat, no play” policy.

You can place uniform orders online quickly using our online ordering system, Flexischools. The payment is also done online, so you don’t need to bring cash or cheques to school or worry about when the uniform shop is open. There are sample sizes of the uniform items in the school office so that your child can try something on before you order it. Online uniform orders are convenient for parents and much faster and easier for our parent volunteers to process. You can choose whether the uniform orders are delivered to your child’s classroom or the school office. Getting online is easy and only takes a few minutes to register. Simply go to

www.flexischools.com.au and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the registration. You can pay for uniform orders using funds from your Flexischools account, a credit card or via bank transfer. The uniform shop is operated by the school Parents and Citizens Association (P&C). The proceeds contribute to the P&C’s financial resources. A uniform coordinator orders stock and keeps the uniform shop operating successfully. The uniform orders are picked by parent volunteers.

Uniform shop opening hours The uniform shop is only open twice in the entire school year for over-the-counter sales. It opens for two days before students arrive for the start of the new school year. We hold sales of pre-loved, second hand uniforms when we have sufficient stock available. We publish dates of pre-loved sales in the school bulletin and on the calendar.

Uniform orders for new Kindergarten students will be picked, packed and delivered to the last orientation session.
