The stars beyond the Bush Theatre stageI’d like to tell you a story. One which I hope might inspire you to support us.

One day in 1988, a script arrived at the Bush Theatre. It was called The Boker Poker Club and it immediately caught the eye of Bush script reader (and future Artistic Director) Dominic Dromgoole.

This was the first play written by Billy Roche of County Wexford. His voice was daring and fresh and it was a play which, despite having been rejected by other theatres, the Bush couldn’t ignore. There was only one problem: there was no phone number on the script.

Determined to produce the play, the Bush team called up the Wexford Post Office and a helpful postman offered to cycle over to Billy’s house and drop a note through his door. The commission was settled a few days later. Billy went on to complete his celebrated Wexford Trilogy (changing the name of the first play to A Handful of Stars) and became a prolific playwright.

After 40 years at the forefront of British Theatre, our commitment to finding the best new writers is as strong as ever. I am inspired by the changing world around us and excited to bring a rich selection of voices to the British stage to make Theatre for London now.
