If someone asks what you should do when you see two elk running
down a hill towards the highway, and you don’t know the answer,
splat! On the other hand, if you don’t see them until they’re at the
roadside, well, then you can test the power of three ABS calipers
and say your prayers. Had you done as they say and constantly scan
the area as you’re driving, you would see said elk running down the
hill. Don’t ask me how I know this. (No one was hurt in telling this
story).
I had an eventful June. First was the Iowa Rally in Middle Amana, IA.
Good friends, food and beer included in the rally fee.
Then an exciting Saturday crossing Iowa, meeting up with fellow club
member Kewlmoose, and having the pleasure of an inattentive driver
back into my bike while we ate lunch at a Subway. (As I write this,
I’m waiting for the visually-impaired-driver’s insurance adjuster to
arrive.)
Then it was off to Sedgwick, CO, a ghost town size hamlet where
Brian M. made arrangements for 9 of us to stay at the Sedgwick B&B.
That town and the B&B owner is a story in itself. Twenty dollars,
which included breakfast. Dinner, a Mexican buffet with barbecued
ribs, was an additional $10. There were two businesses in town –
the B&B and a tavern/liquor store. What else does one need? $30
for a room, shared bath and two meals...beat that, Holiday Inn!
Then on Monday, 7 of us spent a day riding the mountains of the
Rockies. It didn’t take long for my switchback skills to come back
and the experience of riding the twisties was well worth it. On the
downside, the smell of smoke and a hint of haze from a nearby forest
fire covered the air near Ft. Collins. It’s very serious stuff. Finally,
riding down the mountain from Estes Park to I-70, we arrived at
Copper Mountain in preparation for the 40th RA Grand National
Rally.
Highs in the low 70’s and lows in the upper 30’s made for a beautiful
weekend under the guidancee of Tina Doggett, the RA Rally Chair.
Way to go, Tina. You should be proud. Our Wisconsin club was well
represented with 17 club members and 5 associate members. We
came in 2nd, only to Pikes Peak BMW Club. I was impressed. And
I want to extend a huge thanks to John W. who sat out and policed
the unruly outdoor vendor lot for 3 days. No arrests were made
because they feared the “wrath of John” if they got out of hand.
Our club didn’t do too bad in the door prize category either. Mike
C. walked away with a new Kermit chair and the Reitbergers, Bob
and Alex, each won a set of custom ear plugs. I had to wonder if
everything was on the up and up, knowing Alex was drawing the
tickets. Hmmm….
Riding home in 103 degree heat with strong winds made one wish
one was still back in the mountains of Copper, but It’s always nice
to be back home. While we were enjoying the mountain air, Bob L.
led a club campout for those left behind. Hope they all had fun. I
look forward to next year’s campout.
I hate writing this month after month, but one of our longtime
members’ father passed away recently. Brian M.’s father was in
hospice. Brian, please accept our condolences.
I hope to see you all at the July meeting. I’m quite curious what Jeff
B. will be displaying with his Sawzall®/ helmet creation.

CLUB RIDE TO THE GR3 (by Dave Kurth)
What makes a great ride? It is a beautiful day, roads without traffic,
good friends, a great bike, a good destination, or maybe an event
that stirs your heart to just ride?
Well for us on the club ride to the Great River Road Rally it was all
of the above. Ernie volunteered to lead the ride again this year. The
ride started at the Hardee's in Delafield. The loss of Gil Wozniak
caused us all to stop and think and remember what life really
means to us all. The loss of Gil was more than just losing a good
riding buddy. We lost a friend and a brother. The ride to the church
was hard moment and a solemn start to the ride this day. I didn't
have the blessing to know Gil the way a number of you other club
members with more history had known him. Judging by the way
you all spoke so highly of him, he must have been quite a guy. It
was an honor to be present with all of you when we visited with his
family at the church that Friday morning.
We left the church after the visitation and headed west through the
metro area. Ernie even knows good roads through the western
suburbs. We managed to stick together through traffic and
construction and didn't lose one bike. (I WAS watching.)
I had heard from riders from previous years that the ride up to the
rally with Ernie on Friday mornings for the GR3 was the best part
of the weekend. I can now say that the reports were correct. Ernie
led a perfect ride for 14 of us through the farmlands between
Watertown and Madison. We stopped and had a great Bbratwurst
lunch in Sauk City. And then the fun began. I wish I could tell you
what county and state roads we crossed between Sauk City and
Soldiers Grove but it was better to keep my eyes on the road than
to try and mark the way.
The ride was great. Ernie provided the best combination of
challenging roads and speeds that all who joined had fun and just
the right amount of adrenallin. Great job Ernie and thanks for the
super ride!

CLUB RIDE TO ROAD AMERICA (by Jim Guthrie)
The June 9th Ride to Road America for the AHRMA Vintage
motorcycle races was well attended by Miro Sapozhnikov and me.
We had an enjoyable ride through some of the curvies in the North
Unit of the Kettle Moraine, arriving at RA about 10:30am, in time to
see plenty of racing. It was fun to see that the BUILD program
(young folks making race bikes out of Honda 165 basket cases) is
growing. Unfortunately, the bike Mark Hoedel was with broke and
thus didn’t compete. We did meet other club members that opted
to find their own way to the event so the Wisconsin Club was well
represented.
June 23rd
CLUB RIDE TO GUITAR TOWN (by Mike Cohen)
Thanks to Jim Guthrie for laying out the complete route in Garmin.
I was able to lead a ride to Waukesha's Guitar Town spectacle. The
63 mile route covered lots of curvy and scenic roads. Only missed
one turn that led to a U-turn. Unfortunately it was in a very high
traffic area. We got lucky...no one got run over. The riding group
was: Karen Jacobs, Virgil Weber (photographer), Jim Guthrie (ride
planner), Ernie Grill, Tony Law, Jim Fuhrmann, Brian Snyder
(prospective member), and Mike Cohen (ride leader). Our own Jim
Guthrie, his dad, and his son made the white guitar pictured. You
can read about the event at: www.waukeshaguitartown.com

Words of wisdom from A Bikers Guide to Life...

2012 RA RALLY IN COPPER MOUNTAIN
Famous Last Words. Watch This.
Photos courtesy of Mark Kornfehl
Awesome rally. Beautiful scenery, good friends and amazing roads to explore. Saw a few of theusual suspects, like Karen J., Tina & Mark Doggett, John W. (traffic director), Jim G., Mike C., ErieG., Bob & Alex (working at registration), Joy & Ken, Andy P., Dennis P., Jim F., Jerry B., Sarah B.,and at least one newer face...Greg Hagopian. If you weren’t able to be there, just know that we criedin our beer for you – and then we drank it!
Hope everyone enjoyed their rally adventure despite the heat, high winds, and miscellaneousmechanical problems. It was a great trip but it’s always a relief to get home. Looking forward toSedalia in a couple weeks!
In the quest for inexpensive weekend outings, I’ve located the following (some with the help of friends). Don’t have a clue what we’llexperience with some of these but that’s part of the adventure.
August 3-5, 2012 – Wisconsin Moto Guzzi Rally. The price sounds right. Registration is $35 if you pre-register. Camping at Lake
Joy Campground. What do you get? Wisconsin’s best grilled brats and burgers Friday evening, ham, turkey and beef Saturday evening
and deluxe continental breakfasts Saturday and Sunday morning. Wisconsin’s finest refreshments, including soft drinks, will flow from
the artesian taps. The rally fee includes tent camping Friday and Saturday. Lake Joy is in the heart of Wisconsin’s “driftless” region.
The campground has clean modern restrooms and showers. Go to Wisconsin Moto Guzzi Riders. www.wmgr.org
August 10 – 12, 2012. Viola, WI. Viola Banker Park Campground. 321 W. Commercial Street, Viola, WI. Overnight Camping. Pay
at the Village Hall or Viola Quick Stop. Showers, restrooms, RV sites, Kickapoo River. $8.00/night for tents and $12 for RV.
Bob and Nancy Reitberger’s place up nort’ there hey. August 25th weekend. From the mouth of Bob: There will be a carry
forward charge of $1999.99 per person per night for those of you willing to sleep with the bears (if they can get there that weekend. I
understand they have practice that weekend) Oh, that’s the Chicago type – for those of you that don’t understand. (They will bring
their dogs along.) If you can’t come up with the cash there are other ways to earn your keep, like keeping wood on the fire. As always
it is the home of what once was the cleanest outhouse in the north woods. [Haven’t been there yet but it will be cleaned by then] Have
plenty of room on the porch for sleeping bags. The 55 gallon barrels are full of water for your shower if needed and the outhouse was
pumped out within the last 10 years. About a 4 hour ride north, just east of Rhinelander, gravel road about ¾ mile in off of pavement,
easy to navigate – used to do it on my LT all the time. Those of you with a rustic camping fever are all welcome – fair warning this is
not a luxury vacation place. (We might be there early like Wednesday or Thursday).
P.S. Have a refrigerator (gas) to keep liquid refreshments cold, no running water (only when generator is running), no electricity, room
for only about 100 just so you know
Just so I don’t forget, “bring bug spray”. Also there is a motel about 9 miles away if you cannot stand to be in the woods. Pre register
only for space in the refrigerator, first come first served. Only fee for this is liquid refreshment for the landlord. So let’s see how many
camping diehards there really are in this club. The bonfire will be lit every night to keep the bears away. Also there will be a pot of
Nancy’s BBQ and a big bowl of potato salad, buns, chips, pickles, etc. If interested, please email me. [email protected]
August 31 – September 3, 2012. Labor Day Weekend. Blackhawk Park. Thank you to Jim and Joanne for finding this one last
year. We had a great time last year so have decided to return. The cost per night is $24. Each site is allowed to have 2 tents on it.
This means you can camp Labor Day weekend for a total cost of $36. What a deal. If you’re interested in joining us, please book asap.
This park fills up fast. Mark and I have reserved sites 49 and 50. This means we reserved for 3 more tents or pop ups. Let us know if
you’d like one of our spots. [email protected]
Blackhawk Park is located on a forested bend of the main channel of the Mississippi River. The campground is the largest public use
facility in Mississippi's Pool 9, offering a wide variety of recreational activities. This peaceful park is situated on the main channel of
the Mississippi River. Cottonwoods, green ash, swamp oaks, river birch and willow trees forest the site, offering nice shade in the
summer and beautiful colors in autumn.
Visitors commonly see a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles, blue herons, ducks, geese, whitetail deer and wild turkey. Boating,
kayaking, canoeing and fishing are Blackhawk's most popular forms of recreation.
Here, one can view majestic bluffs and rich backwater vegetation. Sometimes a river barge or classic paddle-wheeled steamboat can
be seen journeying up the river. The campground offers 175 campsites, including 73 with electrical hookups. Flush and vault toilets,
showers, and drinking water are provided, as are picnic tables and fire rings.
Two picnic shelters, two boat ramps, two playgrounds, a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, fishing dock, and a dump station are located
on-site. Historic Battle Bluff Prairie State Natural Area is less than 10 minutes away. The site was designated in 1983 and was the
location of a Black Hawk Indian War battle.
The small river towns of DeSoto, Wisconsin and Lansing, Iowa are nearby. DeSoto is 10 minutes south, with a few restaurants and
shops. Lansing is 15 minutes south. LaCrosse, Wisconsin is 30 minutes north, with restaurants, shops, galleries and farmers markets.
Reservations: www.recreation.gov
Anyone interested in any of these campouts, let’s network. Since some of these are first-come, first-served it would be to
our benefit to have sites saved by the early arrivals.
