Dear Cerritos Families and Friends,

I want to offer a most genuine thank you to all of you who participated in our “Be A Beacon” Drive. The response we had to the Donation Drive was amazing! From the students who donated quarters from their piggy banks to the parents who graciously asked their employers for matching funds, we simply wouldn’t have been successful without the generosity of each and every donor. I also want to personally thank the many individuals who donated their time to stuff envelopes, pass out donuts, and collect and process donations. Simply stated: We came TOGETHER as a school and

raised over $20,000! Talk about synergizing to reach a goal! Give yourselves a pat on the back—our first ever direct donation drive was a success thanks to YOU!

With our goal reached, the PTO will be able to support the Cerritos teachers and staff, provide additional educational materials and resources for the classrooms, and help fund the community-building events such as our Ice Cream Social, Pumpkin Walk, and Spring Carnival. Your money goes to the purchase of musical instruments, playground equipment, classroom subscriptions, continuing education for teachers, paper and classroom supplies (in our newly stocked teacher workroom), and so many other big and small efforts to keep the Path to Excellence well-lit!

Well done, Cerritos Roadrunners; you are most certainly leaders in caring and generosity!

Warmly,

Angela Parnell PTO Vice President Donation Drive Chairperson [email protected]

Teacher Supply Closet: We’re happy to announce that the teacher workroom is now well-stocked! With $200 worth of supplies donated by EPI (the company we use for school supply kits), another $410 spent from PTO funds, and some donations from parents, what once were half-empty cabinets and unused drawers are now filled with:

Kids Care Club: Kids Care Club, a community service club, has been a great hit this year. The participation has been the best it has ever been! However, we are in need of 2 yards of fleece material to make blankets for Phoenix Children's

Hospital. Our club goal is to make 75 and we currently only have 25 blankets. So please help Kids Care be a continued success by submitting your donation of 2 yards of fleece fabric by October 4th. If you have any questions please contact Linda Wolf at [email protected] or Kari Watson (Lead Parent Volunteer) at [email protected]. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Workroom Days: Love to make copies, laminate, cut, staple, and collate? Starting in October, the PTO will be offering support to the teachers in the workroom to help lighten their load and allow them more time to focus on teaching. If you’re interested in helping in the workroom once a month, please contact Jane Miller at [email protected].

Volunteer List for the PTO: Are you interested in volunteering for PTO-related events? The PTO regularly emails out volunteer opportunities to a volunteer group via signupgenius.com. From there, you can pick and choose what types of volunteer activities to sign up for and determine what best fits your personal schedule. If you’d like to be a part of this volunteer distribution list, please email your name and phone number to Shannon Smith at [email protected]. We’d love to have you a part of what’s happening with Cerritos PTO!

The Kyrene Governing Board Election for the continuation of the existing Maintenance and Operations Override will be held on November 5, 2013 (early ballots mailed October 10). To be more educated in regard to the upcoming election, please visit the FAQ page at http://www.kyrene.org/Page/25446.

Yearbook Volunteers Wanted!

Do you enjoy putting together digital photobooks? Cropping, enhancing, and formatting photos? Our Yearbook Committee needs you! If you would like to volunteer to work on the 2013-14 Cerritos Yearbook, please plan to attend an upcoming training session on Tuesday, September 17th at 6:00pm. This is a great opportunity to get involved for those of you who like to do volunteer work from home. For more information or to volunteer for the committee, please contact Jazmyne Ivey at [email protected].

Balls, Balls, & More

Balls!

At our August PTO meeting, Sarah Collins, our Student Advisor, brought up a concern that the school was in desperate need of balls for the students to play with at recess time. The PTO approved a designated amount of money to purchase the requested balls. Within a week, the PTO delivered 8 soccer balls, 6 basketballs, 6 playground balls, 8 jump ropes, and 6 footballs. Don’t you just love the opportunity to help provide students a way to “sharpen the saw” when they are not in the classroom? Our Arizona heat tends to shorten the useful life of balls, so if you are interested in personally donating more balls at any time during the year, please go to www.cerritospto.org and view the Amazon wishlist. Amazon will ship them directly to the school on your behalf!

The Cerritos PTO

would like to welcome

our new first grade teacher,

Mrs. Hilstrom, to Cerritos ! We are so

glad that you are here!

Volunteer Spotlight: Christina Weinmann Hometown: Buffalo Grove, IL

Professional Background: Human Resources and Staffing with Motorola, Admissions Counselor with University of Phoenix Online and Business Sales Consultant with Monster Worldwide

Children: Fraternal twins—Cayden & Nathyn, 2nd grade

How Long She’s Been at Cerritos: 2.5 years

Types of PTO Activities She Likes to Volunteer For: Ice Cream Social (chairing for Fall 2013), Spring Carnival, Book Fairs, and Hospitality. I also greatly enjoy being in the classrooms and helping out the teachers whenever I can.

Why She Likes to Volunteer for the PTO: “I love to see familiar smiling faces and have that network of friendships bound by common interests and goals. It’s a great way to feel more connected with what’s going on with my boys’ school while greatly helping out at the same time. Knowing that my participation helps programs be more successful and streamlined for my kids’ school is generally a great feeling.”

One Thing She LOVES about Cerritos: “I love the fact that we focus on the importance of leadership and how to solve problems better in everything we do every day when working with others. I also love that it is equally taught and encouraged at every grade level. A lot of initiatives elsewhere seem to have a lot of steam in the beginning for momentum and then die out. I don’t see this happening at Cerritos because it is continuously integrated into present and future initiatives.”

A BIG THANKS to Christina for being one of our AMAZING volunteers! We appreciate all that she does for Cerritos and for being willing to chair this year’s Ice Cream Social!

At Cerritos, we have so many committed parent volunteers who donate much

of their time, money, and energy. In each issue of the Beep Beep, we like to

spotlight individuals who play an important part in making Cerritos the

wonderful school that it is. Here is one that you’ll have to be sure to meet!

THANK YOU to the many people who volunteered on Curriculum Night for the PTO Teacher Dinner! The Mexican Fiesta for the teachers was a success and much

appreciated by the staff! Thanks to Loco Patron (Billy and Ed) for providing the main dishes and to the following people for donating appetizers, side dishes, and desserts: Arlene Boucher, Dori Eden, Lyn Gerdis, Natalie Hansen, Karla Herder, Tracy McDaniel, Annette Montgomery, Keely Santino, Abby Slife, Shannon Smith, Jill Spangler, Leslie Swanson, Cindy Walters, and Lindsey Worthen. And, of course, a special thanks to our Hospitality team of Jennifer Bhagat and Kim Young for planning such a fun event for the teachers!

Congratulations to our August Box Tops Class Winner —

Mrs. Bell’s 3rd Grade Class!

As a class, they brought in a total of 670 Box Tops in August! They will receive the “Box Tops Trophy” for the month and an otter pop party! Keep on clipping those Box Tops & sending them in!
