Memorizing 3 John

• Verses 1 & 2–The elder, To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth. Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

• Verses 3& 4–It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

3 John cont’d (for next week!)

• Verses 5 & 6– Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you

do for the brethren and for strangers, who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well,

The Life of Prayer

Page 5: Before we get started…

What do you know about prayer?

Page 6: Before we get started…

Open your Bibles to Matthew 15: 21-28

Lets look at 2 different people

in the Bible….

Page 7: Before we get started…

Matthew 15: 21-28 “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son

of David! My daughter is

severely demon-possessed.”

“Lord, help me!”

And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

“Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the

crumbs which fall from their masters’

table.”

“O woman, great is your faith! Let

it be to you as you desire.”

Open your Bibles to Luke 18:35-42

Lets look at another example in the Bible….

Page 9: Before we get started…

Luke 18:35-42“Jesus, Son of David, have

mercy on me!”“Son of David, have mercy on

me!”

“What do you want Me to do for you?”

“Lord, that I may receive my sight.”

“Receive your

sight; your

faith has made you

well.”

And immediately he received his sight, and followed Him, glorifying God.

Page 10: Before we get started…

“Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son

of David! My daughter is

severely demon-possessed.”

What’s the first thing they each said?

“Jesus, Son of David, have

mercy on me!”

Page 11: Before we get started…

They both used

Jesus’ name!

What’s the first thing they each said?

“Have mercy on me”

This shows they have a

HUMBLE heart because they

recognize they are sinners

“O Lord, Son of David” or

“Jesus, Son of David”

Page 12: Before we get started…

John 14:13-14 “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will

do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”

Mark 16:17“And these signs will follow those who believe:

In My name they will cast out demons;…”

…And in Romans 10:13, the Apostle Paul reminds us: “For ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord

shall be SAVED.’”

Can you remember something Jesus said about

praying with His name?

Page 13: Before we get started…

One more example… (Acts 3:3-10)

“Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ

of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”

…When the people wondered how he was

healed, Peter answered:

“…His name, through FAITH in His name, has

made this man strong, whom you see and know….”

(Acts 3:16)

Page 14: Before we get started…

1) We have to have FAITH in Jesus’ name;

2) Jesus’ name is VERY precious & POWERFUL!

• Because he loves us, Jesus gave us the precious gift of being able to pray with His powerful name!

• Through His name, God hears our prayers!

3) We have to pray using His name with a HUMBLE heart by recognizing that we are sinners “Have mercy on me, a sinner!”

What 3 things do we learn from these examples?

Page 15: Before we get started…

Also called - “Arrow prayers”

“The Jesus prayer”

"Lord Jesus Christ Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner”

(Repeat..)

Page 16: Before we get started…

*Our whole lives* should be like a prayer to God

Prayer is speaking with God and being in His presence

The Bible says: “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5: 17)

[MEMORY VERSE]

So, how often should we really pray???

Pray with “UNDERSTANDING” (1 Corinthians 14:15)

Page 17: Before we get started…

Lets play a GAME called:

“Answers without speaking”!

…“Well I talk to God but I can't hear Him!!”

Page 18: Before we get started…

So, when can we pray the “Jesus Prayer”?

Page 19: Before we get started…

You can personalize it…

This week, lets practice praying the “Jesus prayer”

"Lord Jesus Christ Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner. Lord Jesus Christ _________”

(fill in the blank with what you want to ask Him...)

Think about how much JESUS loves YOU and how much you love Jesus…

Ask Him to guide you and help you before everything you do!

Short story on the power of the Jesus Prayer: The monk who couldn’t memorize Psalms A very simple monk lived in one of the monasteries in Egypt. He was

not educated, couldn't read or write, and he couldn't even memorize a psalm.

There was a rule at that monastery, that each monk must memorize Psalm 150 . This simple monk could only pray the Jesus prayer, but he prayed it with all his love, from the bottom of his heart.

At that time the monastery consists of many small cells & each monk would have his own cell. The Abbott of the monastery knew that this monk was not following the monastery's rule and was not memorizing psalms, so the Abbott asked him to leave the monastery.

The simple monk answered: “I will obey you my Father, but please allow me to take my cell with me out of the monastery”. The Abbott laughed at him and his simple mind, and told him that he could take it with him.

The simple monk, brought a rope, wrapped it around the cell, and talked to it saying : "Yalla ya mobaraka" = “Let's go, you blessed one" , and much to the surprise of everybody the cell started moving behind the monk.
