WELCOME ADDRESS

Dear Colleagues, friends, members of MANOSMED,

It is my great pleasure to invite you to the Mastology Course entitled:

“Benign Breast Diseases, Breast Cancer and Basic Science”

of the Mastology Association of Northern and Southern Mediterranean (MANOSMED), which will be held in Naousa, Macedonia, from June 27th to 30th, 2012, Greece.

Naoussa, a town of 25,000 inhabitants, is built on the foothill of Mount Vermion, crossed by the Arapitsa river and is located 500km north of Athens, the capital of Greece and 90km west of Thessaloniki, which is the second largest city of Greece and the capital of Macedonia.

It is in Naoussa that Aristotle, the great Greek philosopher, taught philosophy and other sciences to the children of the Kingdom of Ancient Macedonia, at the famous School of Aristotle. One of his pupils was also the son of the King of Macedonia, Philip the II. It is also in this city that two of the greatest representatives of world history and culture crossed their paths, Aristotle and Alexander the Great.

It is our goal that the Manosmed Course will act as an inviting podium for all doctors of the Mediterranean who will visit Naousa. Mostly for those who will be there to teach and those who will be taught.

The rapid developments in all levels of Mastology, research, study, prevention, diagnosis, cure, and especially in the treatment of breast cancer, necessitate the need for update and further research in the science of Mastology by all scientists who are involved.

We strongly believe that the high level of Lectures and Workshops of the scientific program and the participation of extinguished Speakers will fulfill all needs for research, study and update. The delegates will be thoroughly informed about the new trends in Mastology and the candidates for the DIU Diploma (Diploma in Mastology) will enhance their knowledge on principles, basis and developments.

We hope that all the members and friends of MANOSMED will support our effort and contribute to the success of the course.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in the beautiful city of Naousa.

Best Regards,

The President of the Course

MASTOLOGY ASSOCIATION OF NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN MEDITERRANEANCOMMITTEES

The Mastology Association of Northern and Southern Mediterranean (MANOSMED) that has emerged at the end of the last century, as a mobile university gathering a limited number of academic physicians aiming to teach the art and science of Mastology (also called Senology) succeeded in the year of 2010 to be recognized by Montpellier University Faculty of Medicine as an official provider of Mastology education. MANOSMED was created in 1991 in Barcelona (Spain) by eminent physicians from European countries, working mainly on breast diseases. It was announced, for the first time, in the meeting of the Spanish Association of Senology, by Professor Miguel Prats -Esteve (Spain). The first president of MANOSMED, Professor Jean - Louis Lamarque from Montpellier University’s (France) was elected in the meeting. Later on 2001, Assoc. Professor Michel-Yves Mourou (Monaco) was elected as President of MANOSMED and the first “Manosmed course” was organized in Hammamet Tunisia by Professor Radhi Hamza (Tunisia) in 2002. In 2003 Assoc. Professor Stephane Zervoudis (Greece, France) was elected as the 3rd President of MANOSMED, and modified in accordance with Professor J.L. Lamarque, the status of MANOSMED from a Scientific Association of Mastology to a Mobile University of Mastology. The academic “MANOSMED University” was also recognized in 2009 by the prestigious SIS: Senologic International Society.

The head office of MANOSMED is currently located in the University of Ioannina (Greece) and its website is www.manosmed.org.

MANOSMED started in 2002 to organize annual courses in the Mediterranean countries. In the concept of a mobile university, all its members, who are physicians with didactic position in their University, chose voluntarily to move from their homeland to where the course is given and to share their knowledge and experience with their fellows of the Mediterranean area. The courses have been organized as follows:

2002: Hammamet (Tunisia)2003: Ioannina (Greece)2004: Alexandria (Egypt)2005: Bucharest (Romania)2006: Beirut (Lebanon)2007: Bari (Italy)

In 2012, the Executive Committee of MANOSMED, after the proposal of Professor Jean - Pierre Daures (Montpellier France) dedicated to create the MANOSMED DIU (Diplome Interuniversitaire de Mastologie) MANOSMED as Mediterranean association is the exclusive official provider of the Mastology (Senology) education that leads to this certification offered to physicians and students who register to MANOSMED courses taking place in different Mediterranean countries. The courses organized by MANOSMED are accredited by Montpellier University, the Director of the diploma is Professor J.P. Daures (France). The first course to be academically recognized was the course of Tartous (2009). Beginning in 2011, two courses were proposed annually, one in spring and the second in autumn.

The candidates: physicians in practice of residents, in order to obtain the diploma should register in 4 courses: Each course is dedicated to a chapter of Mastology. There are 4 Modules.

Benign breast diseases, breast cancer and basic science1.

Early breast cancer2.

Benign breast diseases3.

Advanced breast cancer4.

Each course is a 3-day event (approximately 25 hours of didactic lectures, seminars and case discussion). Lectures are given in English or in French, which means that, for a candidate to receive the DIU Diploma, a total amount of 100 teaching hours is required. The candidate will be asked to assist in four courses covering these four areas, in order to fulfil all his educational objectives.

The candidates who wish to obtain the Diploma MANOSMED must pass the written exams that will be given at the end of the course. Each course is equivalent to 10 ECTS and should be transferable to European Universities.
