The Bensenville Library is proud to welcome Scott Turow for our 11th annual Bensenville Reads program. Each year, the Library selects a book or author to promote reading in the community and invites the author to our Bensenville Reads celebration. This year you are invited to read the works of Scott Turow and join the Bensenville Library for an evening with the author on Friday, October 7 at 7 pm. Copies of the books are available at the Library.

Scott Turow is a writer and attorney. He is the author of ten best-selling works of fiction, and two works of non-fiction. His books have been translated into more than 40 languages, sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and have been adapted into a full-length film and two television miniseries.

FLYQUIETROTATIONPLAN-WENEEDYOURHELPEarlier this year, Bensenville, along with other communities, townships and counties, worked with the O’Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC), the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), the Suburban O’Hare Commission (SOC) and the FAA to develop and approve an unprecedented plan to reduce overnight aircraft noise in our region.

The plan creates a rotating schedule of 12 different approach and departure paths to be used from approxi-mately 11:00 pm to 5:30 am. Each week, a different runway will be used, spreading the noise impact across all communities during the 12-week cycle. Only 2 of the 12 weeks utilize runway 10C which has the greatest negative impact on Bensenville.

The results of our efforts are now being realized. However, this is just the beginning. If the FAA doesn’t receive goodcommunityfeedbackfromBensenville,theFAAcouldabandontheplanafterthetestperiod.Weneedyourhelp. Overview of the Fall Play“After the current student body president resigns due to a scandal at a pep rally, Mark Davenport decides to run in a special election for the office. His only competition is the nerdy Christy Martin who wants to eliminate football and initiate an all vegetarian lunch program. Victory seems inevitable, until a Super PAC (with an unlimited budget and questionable ethics) gets involved and Christy jumps ahead in the polls. This timely, funny satire holds up a mirror to our current state of politics and asks the question: who is really pulling the strings of our candidates? Fenton’s fall play, The Election by Don Zolidis promises to bring some laughter in this heated election year.”

MOBILE FOOD PANTRYNORTHERN ILLINOIS FOOD BANKFenton High School continues to serve and support our communities by hosting mobile food pantries from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Our student and staff volunteers helped with the set-up and distributionoffoodforapproximately135familiesinJuneandJuly.Thefoodpantriesarefundedthrough donations and fund raising, and we appreciate the resources and time that our school and community have devoted to assisting our community members. Fenton is committed to continuing this initiative and helping to combat hunger in the communities we serve.

INTRODUCING STANDARDS-BASED REPORT CARDSBensenville School District 2 is pleased to announce the move to a standards-based report card in Grades K – 8, beginning in the 2016-2017 school year. During the previous school year a committee of students, parents, Board of Education members and staff researched and field-tested standards-based reporting to determine if this change would be a good fit. The district held parent information sessions where parents could learn about this type of reporting from experts in the field of assessment as well as Bensenville School District 2 staff. Committee members presented their findings at the May 2016 Board of Education meeting.

This new reporting system will be an exciting step for our schools as we work towards ensuring that all students are successfully meeting grade-level standards. It will ensure there is more consistency among expectations from teacher to teacher and from grade to grade and will allow students to be more aware of what is expected of them to work in partnership with their teachers. Finally, parents/guardians will learn what is expected of their child and how well he or she is progressing towards the standards.

District 2 Selected to Receive New Playground at Mohawk SiteDistrict 2 has been chosen as one of 26 communities and schools across the nation to receive a brand new playground from Target Corporation in 2016.

In partnership with KaBOOM!, District 2, Target and the Village of Bensenville will build a custom-designed playground at the former Mohawk School site on Friday, Sept. 9. The entire playground will be constructed in just one day.

Pre-K Expansion Moving Forward District 2 is about to begin construction to expand its Pre-Kindergarten programs at Tioga School. Six more classrooms and related spaces will be constructed at Tioga School during the 2016-17 school year. Most classrooms will be used for the Head Start program, serving children from birth to five years old. Metropolitan Family Services operates the Head Start program under a federal grant in partnership with District 2. The Board will consider construction bids at its August 17 meeting. The project is being paid for mostly with a low-cost loan awarded by the State Board of Education and with a contribution from Metropolitan Family Services of nearly $1 million.
