“Maheshwar” is a city in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh state, in central India. It is located on National highway 3 (Agra – Mumbai highway). It lies on the north bank of the Narmada River. This city was capital of Somvanshya Shastrarjun Kshatriya who defeated Ravana. This is also the place where lord Parshurama slaughter Shastrarjun for sadistic with his farther Saint Jamdagni. Later on, the city was capital of AhilyaBai Holkar, the queen of Maratha reign in (1767 – 1795). The city has a large history about Marathas.

The city lies on the Narmada River, has big and stunning architectural ghats, these ghats

are constructed during the reign of AhilyaBai Holkar reflect images in the river are so

stunning. The city is approximately 90 km far from Indore, is wealthy with its art,

spirituality, historic importance. It is also known as “Gupt Kashi” for its similar vital of

Lord Shiva’s religious “Kashi”, as it has Shiva temple series.

“Holkar Fort” is a heritage, it was constructed during the Holkar reign by Rani AhilyaBai

as the name indicates, it was the administrative headquarter during her reign, but now it is

converted to guest house. “Rajwada” depicts the history of the Holkars middle in the down.

Now, it is converted into the museum, where a statue of Rani AhilayaBai’s is sitting on the

throne (Rajgaddi), there is also a shrine, and a palki is still there. This is a seven storey

structure, displays the combination of French, Muslims, and Maratha style architecture. You

will amaze to see the engineering work in the ancient time; the intricate designs will

mesmerize your eyes.

After the “Rajwada” the temples and ghats are also spectacular and famous for its spiritual

importance among the people, tourist comes across the country for the darshana of the

temple, the “Rajrajeshwari temple” temple around 100 years.

it is a Lord Shiva temple, when you move into the entrance of the temple you will see the

intricate architecture of the all the temples situated near the ghat, “Omkareshwar” is one

of them.

This city has rituals, and known for its history, spirituality, and architectures. After the visit

in temples, you can go and sit on the “Rani AhilayaBai Ghat”, there you will be relaxed.

Although, the ghats are crowded, but you will be feeling so light. The city is famous for its

structural design; there it is also famous for its eminent “Maheshwari Sarees”.

You can festivals and celebrations that are full of fun such as, Gudi Padava, Teez (New year

celebrations according to the Hindu calendar), All Mondays of Shravan month, (DOLA

of Kashivishwnath on last Monday, bhang is served as prasad of Shiva), Mahashivratri,

Samoti Amavas, and all other Indian festivals.

While visiting to Maheshwar you can’t forget to shop. This city is small but you have a lot

of places to visit. You can hear the history of the city by the local residents of the town.
