to cutting edge designs in yachts, penthouses, retail

Alongside our desire to supply bold, exciting

staircases we also seek to inspire the next

generation of product designers. The inaugural

edition of the EeStairs Design competition has seen

students and young designers from every corner of

the globe come together to develop a plethora of

bold, arresting designs. It is our ambition to foster a

passion for incredible design within the next

generation.

In this book we introduce some of our exciting

completed projects and concept designs. We are

proud to include testimonials from design

In this, the third edition of the EeBook, we take the

opportunity to consider EeStairs’ journey from a

construction company to a renowned and ambitious

staircase manufacturer; set apart by dedication to

innovation. An exciting journey to reflect upon.

What began as a small business has grown into a

company characterized by its slogan, ‘Exponent of

Excellence’; a creative organization proud to be

counted amongst the top international manufacturers

of truly exceptional staircases.

EeStairs’ two founders, Dick Cluistra and Cornelis

van Vlastuin, lead a team that guarantees fantastic,

inspiring products. Cornelis van Vlastuin is the

creative mind and public face whilst Dick Cluistra is

the indomitable worker who thinks of challenges

only in terms of solutions.

Teamwork, innovation and a passion for designing

and engineering products some might consider

impossible, not only characterizes our way of

working, it has provided us with the opportunity to

From design to handover

The journey from original staircase concept to final installation includes several phases. Decisions are never made at once, it is a step by step process. It is just like walking up a staircase: step by step one moves higher and further in the decision-making process. Various ideas crystallize, until finally the last step is made to reach the desired level. This is the moment when the client stands at the top of the staircase and looks down, satisfied with the result. The process from idea to realization takes place in 4 stages.

43 MANUFACTURE AND INSTALLATION

The process begins with a design; be it a

concept, design intent or detailed scheme.

Our Creative Advisors will review the project

requirements before offering tailored creative

solutions supported by costing information.

With the staircase requirements outlined in

the initial design stage EeStairs can optimize

the solution and express the scheme with a

3D computer visualisation depicting the

staircase in its proposed environment. At this

stage specification can be finalised and a

fixed price quotation issued.

EeStairs will conduct a site survey following

which detailed working drawings will be

prepared, based around a 3D CAD model. The

drawing approval and comment process will

preclude preparation of EeStairs’ production

drawings.

Each staircase and balustrade is

manufactured within EeStairs’ purpose built

workshops with mild steel, stainless steel

and timber processing facilities. Staircase

parts are sized in preparation for the

prescribed delivery and installation

methodology. Experienced EeStairs

craftsmen will complete the installation using

state of the art handling equipment, in line

with approved method statements and risk

assessments as required.

At EeStairs we are passionate about design. Our in-house design team wields a collective century of staircase design experience and with it, the potential to turn every staircase into an extraordinary staircase. Our designers will work alongside you, providing design support pre or post tender, adding a specialist perspective to your scheme. We offer support ranging from concept generation and visualization to detail design and input on manufacture and installation.

CONCEPT GENERATION

By continuously pushing the boundaries and

embracing new technologies, innovative

concepts are regularly emerging from EeStairs’

design centre. For example, EeStairs has

developed a unique solution for staircase soffits.

Typically one of the more complex elements on

a helical feature staircase, EeSoffit brings

cutting edge technology to the soffit

manufacture process expanding the potential

for interesting design solutions and crisp

interface details.

VISUALISATION

EeStairs supported an international architects

practice in the development of a striking

penthouse staircase in Turkey. The scale, slow

helix and optimized geometry combine to

deliver an impressive and engaging stair. With a

photorealistic presentation we were able to

bring the staircase design to life.

The elegant staircase The functionality of a staircase can be defined in two ways:

as the shortest connection between two floors or as a

comfortable connection between two floors. These are two

different approaches with far-reaching consequences for the

design and manufacturing process. In conversation with the

Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat it quickly becomes clear that

in the Netherlands construction revolves around the principle

that a staircase between floors should take the shortest path.

“This means that many stairs are relatively steep and narrow,

by which comfort and safety could be jeopardized. The cause

of this type of construction should be sought in part due to

space constraints, for example in social housing. Secondly, there

is a highly competitive market which adversely affects budget

and the design possibilities for architects. Designers are simply

working to reduce costs and don’t choose innovations. Because

of this a relatively traditional way of construction arises. Many

stairways are similar; they have the same incline and are

hardly distinctive. In some cases, such designs are of course

very useful, but I prefer to design a staircase from the

perspective that it needs much space in a design.

For the office tower I designed in the Mahler4 area in the

Zuidas in Amsterdam, the building now known as ‘The Rock’,

I have designed a number of helical staircases. The

characteristic of a helical staircase is that it moves around an

open space. It gives an architect the possibility to give a

generous, gracious and comfor table effect to the design.

Such a complicated design has great implications for the

construction. Only a few stairway manufacturers can make

stairs with very complex structures. One of those is EeStairs.

Together with them we have built a number of large, elegant,

spatial helical staircases. It was a complex project, especially

since we had to create separate areas for staff and visitors.

Nevertheless, together with EeStairs we did a fantastic job.

Parties that see complex projects as a challenge, always

connect well together. That’s what happened here. It is an

important reason why I enjoy working with EeStairs.”

The ‘residential’ staircase Passion and the pursuit of perfection: these are the two binding

elements between Studio DAR in London and EeStairs.

The London architectural and design firm specializes in all

kinds of high quality residential projects, where everything

revolves around customization. Studio DAR is a reputable

agency whose qualities are highly regarded in the UK and

abroad. It is therefore not surprising that a partnership was

created with EeStairs.

Studio DAR worked together closely with EeStairs on a recent

residential project. Igor Falkovsky, the architect for this project,

designed a staircase which blends creativity, originality and

functionality. The principal architect of Studio DAR has more

than 30 architectural and interior design projects to his name.

He knows exactly what he wants, what he is talking about and

which materials are best suited for his designs. It is then up to

EeStairs to continually think about the realization of the ideas

and translate them into a striking and spectacular result.

Falkovsky: “I want my designs always to be distinctive.

To this end, a staircase is an object with unprecedented

opportunities. For this project I have not designed a modern

glass staircase, but one of wood and steel to portray a more

traditional concept, seamlessly blending into the interior.

Not overly ‘jumping-out’, but still very unique. It is a staircase

that definitely adds value to the interior and is a translation of

the customer’s wishes. EeStairs is fully capable of fabricating

the staircase that I have in mind, in such a way, that it

‘comes to life’.

Both EeStairs and Studio DAR aspire to exceed customer

expectations. It’s a goal that can only be achieved when

working with passion; passion for the design and passion for

the performance. It’s all about innovation, professionalism and

As a result of a passion for creativity and desire to encourage the next

generation of architects and product designers to strive for innovation EeStairs

organizes the EeStairs Design Competition every two years. This international

competition is open to students and (young) designers who are invited to

submit their ideas for inspiring, functional staircases and/or balustrades in two

categories: Corporate Staircase and Repeatable Balustrade.

EeStairs Design Competition contributes to the practical experience

of the participants by providing a platform from which they can

attract the interest of fellow professionals and the public. The

competition also provides a way for EeStairs to nurture the

talent of future designers and discover creative and innovative

product designs.

The dynamic staircase The construction industry is a dynamic, ever-changing world.

Construction projects are always different and the diversity of

the available materials provides numerous opportunities for

creative solutions.

J.P. van Eesteren is a very broad-based company, focussing on

“EeStairs creates a market (for stairs) where originality and

allure are important trademarks. It is the art of EeStairs to

increase the function of a staircase. I can still clearly

remember the first job together. It was a project at the ‘Unie’,

where EeStairs built a very special helical staircase that hung

from three poles in the centre. It was a fantastic, much

discussed and dynamic structure, which made a deep

impression.

Gradually it became evident that these stairs, although not

designed to be the main staircase, were more frequently used

than the other staircases. Why? Because the employees of the

‘Unie’ loved the beautiful design and felt it was a special

experience to walk up and down these stairs. This is an

important achievement of EeStairs. A staircase built by

EeStairs has allure because of its design, originality and unique

materials, so that people experience it as a striking object. It is

The trouble-free stairway

Architecture is the art and science of designing what is

referred to as the built environment. Reading this static

description hardly does justice to often stunningly beautiful and

surprising architectural creations. Designs are usually a melting

pot of creativity and innovation, determining the appearance of

the area. Whether it’s the interior or exterior of a building,

architects in consultation with clients, certainly leave their

mark. It is the result of a creative process during which it is

critical for participating partners to work well together.

For the company ‘David Hu Architects’ of New York, working

with EeStairs is a welcome relief. Architect Mark Gumienny

explains that working with EeStairs means you avoid

unpleasant surprises. Based on an initial concept the EeStairs

team makes an appropriate 3D model, giving photo realistic

visualization to the design. A major advantage of this approach

is the ability to discover all unforeseen flaws and problems in

the design. EeStairs will then clearly point out what solutions

are available and what costs are involved. Within the confines of

the client’s budget the company actively searches for solutions

to achieve the best result. Based on the design EeStairs looks

for the use of appropriate, beautiful and original materials, so

the client knows exactly where he stands.

Gumienny: “Because of this way of working, EeStairs could

assure us that they would deliver everything exactly to our

design specifications. EeStairs thinks in terms of appropriate

solutions within the available budget and pretty well no one in

the industry does this.

The two staircases we are making in cooperation with EeStairs

are made from a combination of metal and glass. These

modern staircases have treads with varying dimensions. This

surprises users and makes them aware of the traditional, useful

stairway. With combined creativity, one can achieve stunning

results within the limits of the budget.’’

The staircase as accommodation area

“An architect thinks of a staircase as much more than the object

needed to make a floor accessible. Whilst walking on a

staircase, you literally experience an area from a

different perspective. In this sense, a stair is a spatial

experience and thus can also be regarded as an

accommodation area. As an architect you can play along with

these facts.” These are the words of Anton Bronsvoort of

Bronsvoort Blaak Architects BNA from Amerongen. He

continues: “Not only the staircase, but especially its location, is an

essential part of the spatial game.

Another interesting aspect is, that some one who uses a

staircase is always alert, as he must pay attention to the first

step and has to adjust his speed to the ‘shape’ of the

staircase. When, for example, we designed the new building

for EeStairs, the idea came to us to design a staircase with

steps of glass fastened to a curved steel tube as a carrier. The

arched shape of the tube meant that the steps from the

bottom to the top became continually deeper. As you ascend

the stairway you will find that you will walk more slowly every

step. As a result of this you will experience more intensely a

spacious feeling.

It is a typical example of our cooperation with Cornelis van

Vlastuin, Dick Cluistra and their team. They have the nerve and

talent to make the ideas of architects come to life, so that we

can assure that we, as architects, design and deliver beautiful

‘tailor-made’ designs for our customers. Our clients rarely

know in advance what their building will look like when it is

complete. Many of our clients are com panies for whom

functionality is of primary importance, whilst at the same time

a distinct appearance and characteristic architecture is desired.

By virtue of our partnership with the EeStairs team, we were

able to surprise many of our clients. Even in the design stage

their insight related to their expertise of making special stairs,

walkways and railings. It gives new meaning to the phrase

‘value added’.”

The staircase as an eye catcher A staircase is primarily meant to get you from one floor level to

the next. That’s a static, somewhat tedious description of

an object that can be extraordinary and extremely dynamic. A

good example is the DNA staircase as it was created by designer

Geoff Packer for the exhibition ‘Darwin’s Evolution’ in Spain and

Portugal.

Packer was approached by the Portuguese cell biologist

Prof. José A. Feijó from the University of Lisbon. He was

responsible for the exhibition, and what he had in mind could not

be achieved by local architects. He finally came into contact with

Geoff Packer. He is one of the talented designers at EeStairs

who has more than ten years of experience in designing all kinds

of exceptional and unique stairs. Feijó explained his specific

ideas for a staircase conforming to a DNA model with an RNA

structure. It had to become a unique staircase, an eye catcher at

the exhibition ‘Darwin’s Evolution.’ A staircase: not solely the

means to go up or down, but a functional piece of art.

The first drawings were promising; the staircase was innovative

and surprising. However, the costs of this unique staircase far

exceeded the budget.

The decision to give the green light for the project was

ultimately made in a very late stage. Feijó: “From that moment

on, everything went into high gear. EeStairs has done a terrific

job. The staircase was ready just in time and installation was

completed one day before the opening of the exhibition. From

that moment on everyone could breathe easily again.’’

Meanwhile one and a half million people have visited the

exhibition. The stairs proved to be a real eye catcher. Thanks to

close cooperation between all parties that were involved, the

stair surprised many visitors.

“All the colors, all the curves, all the details, the entire setup was

exactly right so that we achieved more than our original goal.

Because of its artistic design one might almost forget that the

staircase originated as a functional object,’’ said the Portuguese

cell biologist.

After the exhibition in 2011, it is intended that the much-

discussed staircase will be placed in a future science museum in

Lisbon. The legend of the DNA staircase will remain visible for

everyone to behold.

Conclusion

A special building for a special company.

That was the mindset of Anton Bronsvoort

of Bronsvoort Blaak Architecten BV when he

was commissioned to design a commercial

building for EeStairs. The ambitious staircase

manufacturer should certainly not get an

average office building, but a building with

allure, which summarizes what EeStairs stands

for: design and quality.

It had to become a building where

functionality, quality and originality would

merge seamlessly. No standard everyday

structure, but a custom-built product, perfectly

reflecting the way that EeStairs works. This

has been achieved many times over.

The roof of the office building is shaped like a

curved silver shell, encompassing the

production facilities in an ‘L’-shaped form.

Below the curved roof are two levels of office

space. The appearance of the building, among

the more common boxlike buildings in the

Harselaar industrial area of Barneveld, shows

the special nature of the products that are

made within.

The book celebrates EeStairs’ path from

passionate individuals to an internationally

renowned designer and manufacturer of

outstanding staircases and balustrades. In

browsing its pages you have shared our

journey. We hope we’ve painted a picture of

the defining value of stairs in our

surroundings, as well as the distinguishing

role EeStairs can take. ‘Explore the edge

between stairs and art’; adding value to a

property by creating a thing of beauty rather

than specifying a purely functional staircase.

This book showcases beautiful and unique

staircases. However, without the fantastic

people surrounding us, this collection would

never have become as broad as it is today. In

our personal lives our families have always

supported our ambitions. In addition we would

not be where we are today without the strong

and highly motivated team of employees,

unique because of their combination of

knowledge, creativity, skill and willpower. We

also acknowledge our clients and associates

for placing confidence in EeStairs. Finally, a

word of thanks is directed to the end-users

who made the budget available.

Working together with those listed above we

are already taking steps towards our next

book. The book in front of you is not the end,

but the beginning of a beautiful collection for

EeStairs. As was mentioned in the foreword,

EeStairs is proud to be considered one of the

top international manufacturers of

extraordinary staircases and we continue to

strive to push boundaries and drive innovation.

What drives us? Garnering appreciation. Once

there was an extensive interview in a design

magazine from the Middle East. We cannot

conclude better than ending with their words:

in terms of aesthetics and technology, but

A special building

A bright green cube is clearly present as an

independent unit under the large arched roof,

below which a number of areas are located.

On the main level there are offices, whilst on

the first floor there is further office space, a

lunchroom and studio. Visitors to the studio on

the first floor will be surprised by a staircase

with typical EeStairs flare. The staircase is

designed in such a way that one is forced to

walk more slowly with every step.

In constructing the EeStairs building a variety

of materials were used, including glass and

steel. Because of this, the building has a

surprising appearance. Facade, roof, balcony

and railings are all built at different angles and

in partially curved shapes. Everything fits

together perfectly. By combining carefully

chosen materials with innovative design, a

beautiful building has been created. With this

striking headquarters EeStairs has clearly

distinguished itself as a company with

creativity and passion.
