To extend the SLEEPING BEAUTY experience in your classroom, engage your students in a unit where they explore how fairytales can be shaped by time and place.

pArt iExpose your students to different adaptations of the classic story of SLEEPING BEAUTY. Show them the Disney movie, a taped ballet set to Tchaikovsky’s music, and maybe have them read a portion of a non-Disney illustrated rendition of the tale. Then, instruct them to compare the similarities and differences of the major story elements such as: plot, character, setting, and overall style.

pArt iiAsk your students to brainstorm their own version of Sleeping Beauty that takes place in modern-day New York City. Encourage them to translate basic elements of the tale into a more current story. Begin this process by asking them questions such as: Where would Sleeping Beauty live in New York City? What would she like to do for fun? Who would be the king and queen? Who would be the fairy godmothers, the prince, and the evil witch? Continue this exercise with your students delving deeper into what the details of their new adaptations might be.

pArt iiiTo take this exploration to the next level, translate your students’ adaptation into a play to perform for their peers! Take on the role of director yourself and assign your students different tasks: writers, scene designers, costume designers, and performers. Together, create a production that you can show to another classroom in the school. This experience will be memorable for students.

If you end up performing your own version of SLEEPING BEAUTY, send us a video of the show at [email protected]!
