U.S. influence on post-war Japanese culture.
Comic books brought to Japan by American GIs after World War II sparked a creative explosion in Japanese “manga” or cartoons, which evolved into the animation styles popular today. UMD has the most comprehensive collection in the world of Japanese publications, 1945-1949.

Jim Henson’s student days.
While a UMD student, Henson had a local children’s TV show, “Sam and Friends,” featuring an early version of Kermit. Videos of Kermit’s early years join top collections pertaining to American TV and radio broadcasting.
