(ARA) - In 1933, a driver at the amed Indianapolis 500 was pulled o the starting line and not allowed to compete because he had diabetes. Now, in the 100th year o this iconic race, Charlie Kimball is making history as the rst licensed driver with type 1 diabetes to race in the IZOD IndyCar Series. “Racing at the highest level o the series is a dream come true in every sense o the word,” says Kimball, who was diagnosed in 2007 while racing in Europe. “It’s a culmination o years o hard work and support rom my amily and riends.” With no amily history o diabetes and little understanding o the disease, Kimball was overwhelmed when he was rst diagnosed. Even worse, he was orced to put his racing career on hold until he could get his diabetes under control. Kimball quickly learned that people with type 1 diabetes do not produce the insulin their bodies need to properly control blood sugar levels. As a result, people with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin. Despite available treatments, it still can be dicult to achieve optimal blood sugar goals. Te resulting “highs” and “lows” can cause serious side eects, and or some- one behind the wheel o a race car, the consequences could be deadly. But Kimball, just 23 at the time, decided diabetes wouldn’t be the end to his career. He worked with his doctor to nd a treatment regimen that kept his diabetes under control on and o the track. He uses the Levemir FlexPen (insulin de- temir [rDNA origin] injection) and NovoLog (insulin aspart [rDNA origin] injection) to help manage his diabetes. With these changes in place, Kimball was back in the the No. 83 Levemir and NovoLog FlexPen car race car six weeks later and earned a triumphant podium nish in his rst race since his diagnosis. As the only licensed race car driver with diabetes in INDY- CAR, Kimball is in the unique position to share his inspiring story with hospitals in the cities where he races, as well as at diabetes patient expos nationwide. “I am so grateul to everyone at Novo Nordisk or standing beside me and encouraging me along the way,” says Kimball, now 26. “Not only do they make the insulins I take every day to manage my diabetes, but together we’ve partnered to show that diabetes doesn’t have to stop you rom achieving your goals.” “Charlie Kimball is a role model or people living with diabe- tes,” says Dr. Anne Peters, Charlie’s endocrinologist and one o his biggest ans. “He works hard on and o the track to properly manage his condition and shows people that nothing, not even diabetes, should prevent them rom pursu- ing their dreams.” Kimball is cur- rently in his rookie season in the IZOD IndyCar Series and drives or Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing. Metalite Industries has hit the market with a ruggedized pontoon boat that deserves a class o its own. Tis bi-hull sporting/fshing boat’s light-weight, open-deck designmakes it a boat every avid fsherman should own.

Spokane, WA - Te waters o the great Northwestwill never be quite the same - and neither will the lie

o Dan Watson o Lenore, ID.

Watson, recently retired, approached Metalite Indus-tries in March o 2010 looking or a pontoon boatwith the ability to provide both recreational and out-doorsman capabilities.

According to Watson, Te FishHunter gave himmore than he bargained or.

“I’ve owned a number o boats in my lietime, andthe FishHunter is by ar the best shing/recreationalboat I’ve ever been on!”

A Unique Design

Te boat is build with extra-durable marine gradealuminum material, and eatures a user-riendly,open deck, uni-body, vertical bi-hull design with avariety o custom options.

Furthermore, it’s light-weight, rugged design is re-ceiving numerous accolades.

“It has a 90 horsepower motor, and will easily out-perorm a ull-blown jet boat,” Watson said. “I’ve hadguys pull up next to me on the water who are ba edthere’s no jet!”

Chris Newman, President o Metalite Industries, said Te FishHunter bridges the gap between therecreational and sportsman boat-user.

“We wanted to build a boat that will thrive in therugged outdoors,” Newman said. “We put, peror-mance and reliability on high priority, and coupledthese eatures with comort and unction; it can besuccessul in nearly any environment.”

And Watson’s experience at Priest Rapids on the Co-lumbia River serves as testimony.

“Tis area o the water, as most experienced sher-man know, is treacherous territory,” Watson said.“Te FishHunter handled these waters with comortand ease.”

Whether it’s ghting an 11 t. Sturgeon into TeFishHunter’s stable deck, riding the waves on an in-ner-tube with the amily, or cruising the vast waterso Lake Pend Oreille, Watson said this boat is theonly one to have around.

“It really is a ‘reel’ man’s boat.”

It’s always a problem knowing what to pack or amotorcycle tour. Fortunately, that eeling o utterreedom we get when we are riding our bikes ar out-weighs the problem o limited luggage space. Having

said that, the problem doesn’t go away, but by ap-plying a little thought, it can be overcome. Here aresome tips to make lie easier on the road. motorcycletours

ravel Lightly - It’s tempting to throw as much aspossible into your panniers, but remember, every ounce you pack onto your bike reduces handlingqualities. Add to this a pillion and the needle on thepleasure-o-meter begins to swing to the low side.O course, there are some things that you can’t dowithout, but the keyword here is need. ake what youneed and nothing more. I you are going on an orga-nized guided tour, the company should (i it ’s worthits salt) have a back-up vehicle that will carry yourluggage.

Pack Sensibly - o optimize the handling o yourbike, place heavy items at the bottom o your pan-niers.

Beore you go - In the weeks leading up to yourplanned tour, begin making a list o what you mightneed to take with you. At this stage, it doesn’t matteri the list is too long; you can always cross things o as the time draws nearer. By using this method, youwill ensure that the things you take with you are whatyou really need. You will also reduce the risk o leav-ing behind an essential item.

Motorcycle Luggage - Unless you like riding orhours with a rucksack strapped to your back, it’s in-variably better to have panniers and back box. De-tachable panniers are great; they can be unhooked ascarried like a suitcase. Belt bags are also popular orcarrying things like money, credit cards and mobilephone.

o Roll or Not to Roll - You’ll have to decide this oryourselves, but personally speaking I preer to roll my

clothes beore placing them in a bag inside the pan-niers. Other riders like to lay things fat, but it doesn’twork or me. Some bikers like to use zippable plasticbags that are sat upon to squeeze out the air beorethey are sealed. Tey claim that the vacuum keepstheir clothes crease-ree, but o course, I’m just notheavy enough (hee-hee).

ank Bags - ank bags are ne and some o expand-able ones can hold quite a lot o luggage, but it doestake the un out o it a little bit or me. I you’re goingon a tour with a back-up vehicle, you only have to putup with the tank bag until you reach your startingpoint, then someone else carries i t or you; great.

Plastic Sealable Bag - It’s always good to keep yoursmelly socks away rom your good clothes. How many times have you gone into your luggage andound that you can’t decide whether you’ve worn

those socks once beore or not?Small Items - Very oten small items are orgotten, such as; mobile phone charger, camera, camera bat-teries, rst-aid kit, toiletries etc. Tis is when list-making comes into its own. I you’re going to a hotcountry, don’t orget your insect bite/sting cream.Something I always carry is a pack o tissues; I know it’s just a small item, but it comes under ‘Essentials’or me.

Really Essential - I you get as excited as I do prior toa motorcycle tour, please pay extra attention to mak-ing sure that you are carrying your bike documentsand driving license. I you are going to Canada, don’torget your passport, or you’ll be turning around andgoing home. .

Don’t Forget - Unless you are heading or some re-mote region, there will always be a chance to buy things that you orget, but you aren’t really going on ashopping trip so try to remember as much as you can.No doubt, there will be something you need, and itcan be un nding these things in a oreign town, buti the list is long, it can become tiresome. Well, you’vepacked and you’re on your way. Have a great time andride saely. May the roads be long and winding, andthe sky blue.

(ARA) - What happens when you take some o America’s avorite stars away rom the glitz and glamo their day jobs and put them on an 11-turn roadcourse? It’s simple: Tey become transormed intomodern-day race-car drivers ... and there is no roomor acting or stunt doubles in this role.

Each spring, a select group o Hollywood’s elite headsto Long Beach, Cali., to train and compete againsteach other and proessionals in the annual oyotaPro/Celebrity Race. Celebrities will zoom around a1.97-mile track in race-ready Scion tCs through thestreets o downtown Long Beach April 16. Te event,in its 35th year, is the largest, longest-running corpo-rate-sponsored celebrity racing event in the world.

Close to 550 celebrities, such as Keanu Reeves,Adrien Brody, Cameron Diaz, Ashley Judd, Patrick Dempsey, Donny Osmond, Jay Leno, George Lucasand Queen Latiah, have taken time away rom sets, stages and studios over the years to ll a new role:race-car driver. Te stars receive extensive trainingin order to suit up on race day as certied drivers.Oscar-winners and prime-time heroes set stardomaside or a ew days to chase a dierent dream - aneed or speed.

“Win or lose, this race thrills celebrities and pro driv-ers alike, because it oers the high-speed challenge o real racing, combined with a worthwhile charitableendeavor,” says Les Unger, national motorsportsmanager at oyota Motor Sales, U.S.A.

Some o the star drivers are already racing enthusi-asts, while some have never accelerated aster thanthe speed limit. What they have in common is their

passion to do good - both or their own charity o choice and the charity that the oyota Pro/Celebrity Race supports: Racing or Kids, a national organi-zation that benets children’s hospitals in SouthernCaliornia. oyota donates $5,000 on behal o eachdriver to Racing or Kids and $5,000 more to thewinner’s charity o choice. And every year since the

event’s inception in 1977, the participating celebri-ties make a visit to a children’s hospital to spend timewith some o the ill and recovering kids who benetrom the $1.9 million that has been donated over theyears by oyota.

Dr. William Pinsky, a New Orleans-based pediat-ric cardiologist, ounded Racing or Kids in the late1980s as a way to connect sick children with theiravorite race-car drivers, and in this case, stars. “I usedto race cars, but I wasn’t any good at it, so I decidedto combine two o the things I loved most,” says Pin-sky, who visited Miller Children’s Hospital in LongBeach with last year’s racers.

Tat same passion makes the oyota Pro/Celebrity Race a must or the celebrity drivers. “I love gettingto do events like this where you meet people you’velooked up to, and you do things you don’t normally get a chance to do,” says 2010’s winning celebrity

driver Brian Austin Green. “And in this event wedid it or charity; it beneted the children’s hospitalin Long Beach and in Orange County, Cali.; it wasamazing.”

A used car can be a valuable asset i you know how tolook ater it. Ater all, not having to worry about anexpensive car payment every month is nice! But, justbecause you own a used car doesn’t mean that youcan’t enjoy a luxurious interior, or sparkling exterior.I you’ve decided to keep your used car around orawhile, take advantage o the ollowing 5 tips. Tey will help your car look younger!

1. Wax your vehicle twice a year. Have you ever seen acar with dull spots, rust, and aded paint? It makes thecar look like an old clunker, even i it really isn’t thatold! Regular waxing protects your car’s paint romthe elements. Sun, snow, dust, and humidity can alldo a number on your car. I you want to hang ontothat new-car shine, invest in a good waxing every six months. And, i you really want to get ancy, youcan have a body shop proessionally remove all o the

dents, dings, and scratches that are putting a damperon your car ’s appearance.

2. Replace old or worn tires. Aside rom being a sae-ty hazard, worn tires make the rest o your car look old. It’s like wearing a designer outt with ratty oldsneakers. Shiny new tires with resh tread make orsaer driving and a newer-looking car.

3. It’s the little things that matter. It is easy or carsto all victim to damaged or missing trim, old junky windshield wipers, or chipped mirrors as they get old-er. But, a ew minor upgrades can make your car look years younger – without breaking your budget.

4. Make small repairs. Tis is something that can re-ally help second hand cars – especially i you don’tknow how the previous owner treated the car. Squeaky

brakes, a thundering mu er, or fapping belts canmake your car seem (and sound!) much older than

it really is. As an added benet, making some smallrepairs now can help prevent major expensive break-downs later.

5. Keep the inside spic and span. For some reason, people are much more tolerant o a mess in their carsthan a mess in their homes. Even the most organizedpeople can wind up driving around in a car that’s ullo dirt and junk. Tings that you never think about– like dirty foor mats, stains on your upholstery, andthe kids’ toys rattling around – can make your carseem like an old trash heap. You don’t need to buy anew car to eel luxurious driving around; you mightjust need some stain remover or some new foor mats.Either way, keeping the interior o your used car cleancan make a world o dierence!
