Bimini Airport Runway BHM CO. LTD Background The development of Bimini Bay Resort will bring with it significant growth in visitors in the future. Made up of three islands, North Bimini, South Bimini and East Bimini, Bimini is the closest point in the Bahamas to the USA. The airport is situated on the South Island, with Bimini Bay Resort, the Port and the majority of the amenities located on the North Island. Movement between the islands is only possible by boat. To accommodate the anticipated growth in visitors to Bimini, the infrastructure needed significant improvements, including an extension to the existing runway to accommodate larger planes. Project Description BHM was appointed as Main Contractor to undertake significant improvements to the airport’s existing airside infrastructure. The project included the extension of the existing runway by 1,000ft, increasing the area of the existing apron by nearly 200% and the construction of a new taxi-way onto the runway to supplement the existing. The whole project required BHM to undertake bulk earthworks, grading and HMA paving. BackgroundNamed after Sir Lynden Pindling, the first Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, the airport sits just west of Nassau. The expansion of the airport was essential to attract and accommodate up to 5 million passengers annually and become one of the top world-class airports in North America.

With US pre-clearance facility, the airport offers Americans and transit passengers to and from the United States, who will make up 80% of passengers in the future, the added advantage of transitioning through US Customs and Immigration before leaving The Bahamas.

The expansion of the airport was undertaken in three stages. Stage One - US Departures Terminal. Stage Two - construction of a new International Arrivals Terminal and Pier. Stage Three - the construction of a new International Departures Terminal, together with a new Domestic Terminal.

BackgroundAbaco has around 90,000 visitors every year; Marsh Harbour Airport is the second busiest airport in the country and one of the busiest airports in the entire Caribbean region. The building of the new Marsh Harbour airport terminal, air traffic control tower and fire/crash rescue facility and new runway was designed to enhance Marsh Harbour Airport’s capacity to provide quality service to the growing number of Abaco residents and visitors.

Project DescriptionBHM was appointed as a major specialist subcontractor to support and collaborate with the main contractor FES Construction. The project included the construction of a new parallel runway, including site clearance, bulk earthworks, HMA paving, runway lighting, signage and approach lighting. It also required the rehabilitation and extension of the existing runway and associated taxiway links.

BackgroundThe existing Norman’s Cay Airstrip was in poor condition and only 3,000 feet long; the airfield did not comply with international regulations for flight operations.

The client is intending to develop an upscale resort and luxury housing on the Cay and wished to upgrade the airfield so that it could become a point of entry into the Bahamas. A marina was also to be developed for the use of the residents and guests.

Project DescriptionBHM was appointed main contractor for the runway and marina works. The project includes the excavation of a marina which provides fill for the bulk earthworks for a new runway built partially on reclaimed land. Also included in the project are surface dressing, shore protection, sand seal road, fencing and traffic marking works. Due to the environmentally sensitive nature of the surroundings, inclusive of a National Marine reserve, a high degree of environmental compliance was established on the project.
