Project Narrative1. What is planned?* Describe project plan and indicate which parts of project any NMHC award will fund.

This series of online workshops will include the disciplines of photography, animation, and 2D design. In an effort to create a collegial environment for discussing artistic skills and broadening the understanding of viewpoints, we will motivate our community to work together with selected scholars for each technique. We plan on using a workshop style in an online format. Our goal is to set up a series of virtual classrooms, create video tutorials and have interactive dialogs between participants and scholars as well as the general public.

The photography classes with Walter McQuie will present the aspects of manual camera settings and a basic understanding of the mechanics of photography. These classes will explore a wide range of subjects and views on the history of photography, as well as the participants interaction with their environment through landscape and still life. We hope to encourage an understanding of narrative, beauty, and expression that is possible with still images. This approach towards meaning, composition and acumen furthers our communities awareness of the world around them and photography as a mode of communication.

The animation classes with Mike Enright and the 2D Design classes by Erin Cadigan will follow a similar format of a mix of technical and interpretaive approaches geared toward the humanities.

These online events will include a drive/walk-up hotspot at the Jemez Public Library to allow access for those that may not have internet at home. These events will be interactive, some in real time online classrooms with active correspondence. Other sessions will be pre recorded discussions and instructions. Participants will receive feedback from the scholars on projects created in the workshops. There will be an online gallery to be viewed by the participants, scholars, and public. Documentation of the live and online discussions will accompany the presentation of the work created in the workshops by participants on Jemez Springs Public Library and Mission Street Arts websites. Growing technical skills along with artistic valor are our goals. Within the confines of online participation, we plan on exploring the best practices for encouraging insight, growth and understanding of different points of view both culturally and artistically.

Funds awarded by the New Mexico Humanities Council will be used to provide honoraria, marketing, publicity, and technical support, including online platform portal design.

Comment: This description is too vague. What will final projects look like? Is the project just to get feedback for participants?

4.24.2020 - LSS

Not clear as to what is planned. Describe the online events in detail/themes. kmq

2. When will it take place?* Planned public program dates and times.

Dates and times for in person workshops will be determined by the state's social distancing guidelines. Online events will be available 24/7 with interactive aspects based on the scholars schedules. We are currently setting up an active calendar and coordinating production and design of the online platform. Our goal is to schedule online workshops in the summer and early fall of 2020.

Comment: Need tentative dates in here for contact purposes. Are locations (Q#3) booked for certain dates already? 4/24/2020 LSS

How accessible will planned events be to your audiences? KMQ

3. Where will it take place?* List communities of public programs, including venues.

The events will take place online in a digital classroom environment. Our base of operations is Mission Street Arts studios which is located in the Village of Jemez Springs. The workshops are to be recorded at various locations. When possible the Jemez Springs Public Library will be utilized for some group meetings or salons, and to physically display works created in the workshops over the course of the project. All aspects of the project (workshops, discussions, and works created by participants) will be available through links on the Jemez Springs Public Library and Mission Street Arts websites.

Comment: Where else will programs be accessible to the public? How will your audiences know to hop on libraries's website to get these programs? kmq

4. Who are the Required Project Personnel for this Project?* Required Personnel include Project Director, Fiscal Agent, Humanities Scholar(s) and Evaluator. Provide names, titles and brief qualifications for their role(s) in this project.

5. How does this project involve the humanities disciplines?* The act that established the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) says, “The term ‘humanities’ includes, but is not limited to, the study of the following: language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism, and theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.”

Within the current constraints of social distancing we are moving our programming online. We hope to continue to serve our community by facilitating a discussion, with virtual artists in residence, of art, art making and how this impacts our community during this time of quarantine. By discussing the history, basic building blocks and social impact that the various art forms have on our society at large and how we might use these new skills attained in the workshops by participants to understand our challenging future. Another

goal is to enable a widened view in our local community and to add to the personal enrichment of each participant. With these goals in mind, a greater understanding of the human condition is gained.

The content of this series will touch on how these various artistic techniques can be interpreted through a lens of current social or public issues and concerns, by encouraging these critical discussions and providing feedback in our online classrooms. By participants networking with the visiting online scholars, with one another and presenting finished pieces to the community, we will be taking a journey together sharing persepectives of our neighbors and environment. With the programs providing hands on skill building and cultural understanding in the various artforms, we intend to provide a forum that engages and challenges. The online events will explore a new way of connecting our community with our artists in physical or virtual residence.

Comment: Elaborate - need more details on how specific projects and/or scholars will provide the content. 4/24/2020 LSS

Explain the themes to be addressed in these programs. KMQ

6. What are the evaluation criteria for the project?* Consider the impact the project intends to have on its audience and how that will be measured or evaluated by the Project Director and Evaluator.

Evaluation criteria include, attendance, feedback from attendees and scholars, how closely the budget was followed, and critical review by Mission Street Arts board members.

Through inviting the evaluator to review all the materials presented and work created in the programs we hope to allow for critical feedback on the cohesion and value to the community. We will provide questionnaires to be filled out by participants.

With these tools in mind there will be a formal review with the Mission Street Arts board and the evaluator to discuss the value and effectiveness in providing an enriched view of the subjects and their impact on the community.

Comment: Get evaluator input on how these criteria will be measured - REQUIRED as part of final reporting! 4.24.2020 LSS

7. What is the role of each humanities scholar(s) in this project?* Describe the intended contribution of each humanities scholar listed above. What humanities issues will they address?

The scholars listed above will contribute by sharing their expertise in their chosen field by creating online interactive workshops and/or demonstrations, and engage in spirited conversation with our community.

In our photography workshop, Walter McQuie will be conducting the class by showing his journey in the use of the manual functions of the camera and the creative view of the composition of images. While touching on personal aspects of shooting landscapes, nature portraits, and abstract forms in New Mexico, he will be discussing the history of the artform and how it has grown and changed with modern societal and technological advances. We intend to help the participants engage and grow in their understanding of photography as a means of expression and commentary on current events.

In our children's animation workshop, Mike Enright will encourage all the attendees to learn a means to create short animations that can be done with household items and simple free software that will be easily

eccessable. With his love of the form and his ability to inspire creativity he will help the participants to learn the depth and challenges in creating animation without being intimidated by it. History of the moving image will be taught along with some of the earliest techniques and how it has been used as a tool of social commentary. Each attendee will be given the opportunity to create multiple pieces in the physical and virtual realm. With his feedback and expertise, Professor Enright will be cultivating critical discussions of animation as a critique of society.

In our 2D Pattern making class Erin Cadagan will utilize her understanding of the forms, technique and print repeats to express a visual interpretation of the world around us. This repeat based design class will be executed by hand in an interactive computer environment. Touching on various histories and cultural uses of patterns will provide an armature that will encourage participants to not only create original works, but to build a vocabulary to use in viewing and understanding the various examples of this ubiquitous artform.

Comment: Need more detail - name each scholar's humanities contribution to the project.

8. Proposed targeted audience/participants?* Indicate demographics and/or geographic area and projected size of audience for project events. Identify new or underserved populations that might be included in target audience.

Scattered along the Jemez River in the mountains is our mixed rural, agricultural community. It’s beautiful views and easy access to the Santa Fe National Forest have attracted many seniors and retirees, along with individuals and families that prefer a more isolated lifestyle. We intend to engage them with our varied programming.

By targeting our senior center, located in the town of Canon, with emails, posters and facebook blasts. Similar approaches will be taken to reach out to the homeschooling families and the newly homeschooled in the Valley. We will also be listed by the Jemez Springs Library in their monthly newsletter of cultural events. The project will reach out to the entire community of the Jemez Valley with an emphasis on the youth and senior citizens.

Comment: What is this population? What experience do you have reaching out to this population - give examples of previous audiences and new that this program might reach. LSS 4.24.2020

9. Planned publicity efforts?* List plans by sponsor organization and partners, types of media to be used and geographic areas to be targeted.

Out reach will be executed with targeted emails, local paid advertings in area publications as well as event listings, posters/flyers, and on the Jemez Springs Public Library, the Village of Jemez Springs, and Mission Street Arts websites, in addition to their respective social media platforms i.e. Facebook, Instagram, various chat rooms.

Comment: Targeted emails to who? Grant committee may be familiar with your community - must give more details (and match budget). 4/24/2020 LSS

10. Value of Project on Audience Members* Describe how a successful project will impact audience members and their communities.

From: Mike Enright 210 Scholes St. Apt B1 Brooklyn NY 11206 In regards to: Mission Street Arts: A series of workshops, demonstrations, and conversations Dear Committee,

It would be an honor to work with you and your community to enrich the cultural atmosphere in Jemez Springs through leading a workshop instructing youth in the art of traditional animation techniques. Through a curriculum timed over the course of a three day online workshop in conjunction with resources from the Jemez Springs Public Library, I would give an overview of how animation works, a historical context of the artform, and an explanation of techniques to inspire young artists.

My continuous career in animation education began in 2003 in institutions of higher learning and has since expanded to include sharing the techniques of my craft with a wide range of pupils from children’s workshops, to adults and professionals in continuing education courses, and most recently abroad during a three day workshop to art students in France. I find great joy in sharing methods that allow other artists the ability to bring their visions and stories to life. My approach is primarily a technical one, introducing the science and theories that allow for the animated motion picture to exist as a phenomenon. This mixed with a history of how we as artists and consumers manifest and utilize stories and events dictated by the ever changing tools that are available to us and social occurrences that surround us.

I look forward to the opportunity to share my knowledge of animation with your

community in the upcoming workshops.

All the best, Mike Enright https://enrightmike.wordpress.com/

To Whom It May Concern

I would lie to participate in the online teaching series through Mission Street Arts. My expertise lies in hand drawn illustration and creating repeated patterns by hand. In my twenty four year career I have been a freelance illustrator, a fashion designer, a textile designer and most recently have gotten into the field of environmental design. In 2011 AVA / Bloomsbury hired me to write an undergraduate textbook on sourcing and creating textiles for fashion. I have also taught design and illustration in the fashion department of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn NY.

My proposed course will take students from design concept through finished seamless repeat pattern. I will teach how to accomplish this with out the use of computer programs or assistance. The entire course will rely on hand skills and simple art tools like tracing paper, light box, exact blade, etc. The final resulting pattern block will be most useful scanned into a computer and turned in a digital file for production purposes. However, I can also guide students on how to print their repeat block by burning a screen print or carving a block.

Sincerely yours,

Erin Cadigan

Dear Mission Street Arts,

It would be an honor to participate in Mission Street Arts: A series of workshops, demonstrations,

and conversations as a scholar.

The workshops will be held at the Mission Street Arts studios or online as safety permits.

Participants in the workshops will receive instruction regarding every aspect of modern digital

photography, including composition for still life & landscape, layout, and editing.

I have been living in Northwest New Mexico for 15 years. When I first visited I “fell under the spell”

and moved here six months later. I organize my life around creative activities such as gardening

and photography, in addition to hiking and exploring areas few have seen.

I use photography to explore the scale, expanse, and perspective of the landscape in New

Mexico. As my skills have grown I have moved on to larger print formats.

Following a happenstance but oh so enchanting visit to Northern New Mexico 15 years ago, I

have occupied and explored our mountains and high desert, canyons, mesas and badlands. This

evolving relationship has involved me in two creative endeavors—market gardening and

landscape photography—that benefit not just from specialized knowledge but insight and

passion. I join Mission Street Arts and the community on a photographic journey of exploration

and seeing in these workshops.

Thank you again for this opportunity.

Sincerely,

Walter McQuie
