Response:‘Only one GOP candidate can defeat Obama: Ron Paul’

‘SpectacleStudy’: “Where do I start? Tony’s assessment is very flawed. Conservatives don’t want someone with a socially liberal base. The CPAC straw poll is pandering. In 2008 Romney was neck to neck with McCain and Huckabee wasn’t far behind. Ron Paul has extremely liberal stances on domestic policies such as gay marriages, marijuana legalization and is equally liberal in foreign policy favoring non-interventionist foreign policy and immediate withdrawal of troops from not only, combat zones but for-eign bases as well.

Here is Paul regarding a resolution endorsing Israel’s millitary actions:

“Madame Speaker, I strongly oppose H. Res. 34, which was rushed to the floor with almost no prior notice and without consideration by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The resolution clearly takes one side in a conflict that has nothing to do with the United States or U.S. interests. I am concerned that the weapons currently being used by Israel against the Palestinians in Gaza are made in America and paid for by American taxpayers. What will adopting this resolution do to the perception of the United States in the Muslim and Arab world? What kind of blowback might we see from this? What moral responsibility do we have for the violence in Israel and Gaza after having pro-vided so much military support to one side?”

Response:‘Only one GOP candidate can defeat Obama: Ron Paul’

‘Mitchell Ryan Kramb’: “I don’t get what Republicans don’t understand, or can’t comprehend, about Ron being the ONLY Republican with ANY chance of beating Obama! It’s not that hard to get the fact that Paul would not only have the Republican base supporting him — he would ALSO be drawing large number of progressives, Democrats, and most importantly — inde-pendents, mainly for his staunch anti-war, anti-corporate welfare stance that he takes!

The only successful strategy will be to nominate Ron Paul, and then watch him destroy Obama. Ron Paul WILL pull the youth vote again, this time he’ll take many of Obama’s young supporters, as WELL as all individuals from the groups I mentioned above.

Republicans — there are NO other Republicans who could come close!”

Response:‘Only one GOP candidate can defeat Obama: Ron Paul’

‘James Moore’: “Hell yes! Ron Paul 2012!”

Response:‘Only one GOP candidate can defeat Obama: Ron Paul’

‘skiracer18’: “RON PAUL 2012! He can do it!”

A s most of the world knows, Prince William and Princess Catherine celebrated their

wedding on Friday in London’s Westminster Abbey. More than 1 million people packed the streets of London to celebrate the new royal couple, and more than 2 billion people watched on TV and the Internet.

What most people don’t know is that another wedding took place on Friday, a wedding that I was actually invited to. The couple, while classy, aren’t royals, and certainly no titles were bestowed besides the title of Mrs. on the bride. This wedding was a fun one, and I’m glad that I had a chance to celebrate not just one, but two marriages over

the weekend. There were quite a few aspects of the wedding, though, that I felt could’ve used a royal touch. Bridal couples everywhere should take note of the Prince and Princess’ nuptials when planning their own weddings:

1. DON’T DRINK AT YOUR WEDDINGEspecially during the toasts. Yes, the

best man and the maid of honor will undoubtedly give the speeches they’ve probably spent weeks working on, but remember the people at your reception are toasting to you. You don’t toast to yourself, and likewise, you don’t drink to yourself. Let other people do the drinking. And when the toasts are over and done, you still want to look your best. Don’t forget the photographer will be snapping away for the entire night, and you don’t want to be hungover on your way to your honeymoon (By the way, pictures were taken of William and Catherine the morning after their wedding, and they both looked fantastic, not drunk).

2. WEAR SOMETHING THAT ISN’T STRAPLESS

Besides the excuse that everybody wears strapless dresses, wearing something with sleeves gives you the aura of respectability. Even if you want to wear something modern, that doesn’t mean that you have to wear something that exposes your shoulders. Plus, it’s awkward for me, the guest, to hug you when the first few inches of your torso are exposed. Not to mention if you break the first rule, it’s possible to show

your guests something they definitely did not want to see.

3. DON’T TRY TO BE FUNNY Weddings are supposed to be a

dignified, respectable milestone in the lives of both the bride and the groom, as well as for their families. If you try to make your wedding unique by incorporating humorous elements into the ceremony, you will definitely make sure your wedding is remembered, but only as the wedding not to have.

4. WALK SLOWLY This is the most important walk of

your life. Even if you’re not the one getting married, if you are walking down the aisle as a friend or family member of the bridal couple, you are still part of something sacred and special. Walk with some grace, and don’t treat the aisle like a catwalk. Church aisles are for walking, not sprinting.

5. DON’T MAKE YOUR BRIDESMADES WEAR SOMETHING UGLY

Catherine Middleton made sure her sister, Pippa, wore something that was beautiful and classy. Most brides put their besties in something that makes them look hideous to emphasize the beauty of the bride. But if you put the girls standing next to you in something pretty that emphasizes their beauty, not yours, your guests will find it refreshing to see some pretty girls next to the bride, for a change. Not to mention your friends will thank you for it.

Going Madd

W e got him. Finally.Osama bin Laden is dead.Yesterday, after months

of tracking a lead on the terrorist who was the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, a special forces unit of the United States military crossed the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and engaged in a firefight with bin Laden, killing him and recovering his body.

This is big news. I was in 6th grade on September 11, 2001. I remember seeing the Twin Towers ablaze on the television set in my parents’ bedroom. I remember the moment of silence my teacher instructed us to have, and praying in vain for the safety of all those involved. I remember seeing the paper on September 12, specifically

the photos of people jumping to their death rather than experiencing the col-lapse of the towers, with tears coming to my eyes.

Nearly 3,000 human beings died in those attacks. Both towers of the World Trade Center were hit and collapsed; the Pentagon was hit; the passengers of Flight 93 heroically crashed their airplane in the fields of Pennsylvania, an airplane likely headed for the White House.

It was a harrowing experience, the worst tragedy ever to befall the United States of America. To this day, it is hard to even speak of it.

So when I heard the news of bin Laden’s death, I wanted to join those citizens who flocked to the gates of the White House singing, “Na Na, Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)!”

President Barack Obama said it best in his speech announcing bin Laden’s death: “On nights like this one, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to al Qaeda’s terror, justice has been done.”

Indeed, justice has been done. If anyone ever deserved a fate such as this, it would be the mass murdering, bloodthirsty, cowardly, evil Osama bin Laden.

What does this mean for the future?Does this mean the War on Terror is

over? Are our troops coming home?President Obama made the answers

to these questions quite clear: “His death does not mark the end of our effort. There’s no doubt that al Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against

us. We must — and we will — remain vigilant at home and abroad.”

Presumably, this means that our troops currently in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Libya are not budging. The War on Terror is not ending.

Obama is right about one thing: al Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against America. But is our current foreign policy the best way to prevent those attacks?

Bin Laden was the symbolic, if not still the practical, leader of al Qaeda, and his death deals them a mighty blow. He was by far their most talented and charismatic leader. Their efforts and schemes are, if not completely shattered, severely hampered.

Did we not enter Afghanistan to exact revenge upon the evil men who, in an act of abject cowardice, brazenly attacked us nearly a decade ago?

What was it all for?Our objectives have been met.

Justice has been served. Good has tri-umphed over evil.

The Taliban was chased from gov-ernment long ago. Iraq has long had a functioning, albeit corrupt, post-Sad-dam Hussein government. Osama bin Laden is now dead.

It’s time for our troops to come home.

Let them join the throngs of Americans outside 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue singing of the demise of bin Laden.

That would be the best way to cel-ebrate.

Goodbye, bin Laden

Originally scheduled for a summer 2010 opening, con-struction of the aquatic center has been delayed and will now be completed by the fall 2011 semester.

S h i r l e y M e l i k i a n Armbruster, associate vice president o f Universi ty C o m m u n i c a t i o n s , s a i d through email that the delay was not due to a financial issue.

“The delay in the project completion was caused by the excessive amount of rain we experienced during the fall, winter and spring months,” Armbruster said.

Armbruster said the proj-ect is on budget at exactly $6,097,000, and the inclement weather delays did not impact the cost of the project.

In a previous Collegian arti-cle, Associate Vice President for Facilities Management Robert Boyd explained fund-ing for this type of project comes through bond sales and does not affect student tuition.

Boyd went on to explain that the Califor nia State University system has hun-dreds of millions of dollars

Aquatic center set to open fall 2011By Leonard Valerio

The new aquatic center will include a designated pool for kinesiology classes, a designated competition pool with one meter and three meter diving platforms and a dry-land training area.

to fund construction projects at all CSU campuses and con-struction of projects and are based on priority.

With the addition of the women’s swimming and div-ing team, the university’s need for the aquatic center was very high.

In a previous ar t icle, A s s o c i a t e D i r e c t o r o f Facilities and Events John Kriebs said the high priority was determined because the girls’ swimming and diving team was reinstated, and the pool on campus did not meet NCAA regulation. As a result, the swim team is forced to commute to Clovis North High School for practice and compe-titions.

Armbruster also explained the pool was approved in order to meet Title IX requirements and to provide a facility that met NCAA regulations for swim competitions.

Armbruster said the cur-rent pool does not meet NCAA regulations because there are not enough lanes, there is no timing equipment, no 3-meter diving platform and the facil-ity is not large enough to accommodate teams and fans during competitions.

According to Armbruster, the absence of an up-to-date swim facility also puts the swimming and diving team at a recruiting disadvantage.

Armbruster said the project is in the final phase.

“The next phase of the project will include the con-struction of the dive tower, the plastering, filling and commissioning of the three pools and the completion of the landscaping,” Armbruster said. “These remaining activi-ties should be complete by Fall 2011.”

Once the aquatic center is completed, the pool in the north gym will be closed and the kinesiology department will employ the facility for aquatic classes. Armbruster said the idea of holding other activities at the aquatic cen-ter is still in the construction phase.

Several student designers and stylists had the opportunity to showcase their work at Fashion, Inc.’s first spring fash-ion show.

Fashion, Inc., Fresno State’s only on-campus fashion club, hosted this year’s spring fash-ion show on Saturday in front of the school’s most avid fash-ion enthusiasts.

Student designers and styl-ists worked for several weeks to coordinate the show, which

showcased student designs

and styles.Local designers, who served

as sponsors and vendors of the event, set up tables in the Satellite Student Union, where the show took place, and sold products before and after the show.

“We incorporate a lot of laid-back designs into our merchandise,” Matt Klein, owner of Jimmy Fresh brand, said. “We were at Vintage

Days, and they asked us to par-ticipate in the fashion show today.”

The show itself featured an eclectic array of techno-inspired apparel, and even fea-tured a pet apparel line, which was displayed on stuffed ani-mal dogs held by models on the runway.

Most of the students who modeled in the show, though not all of them were members

of the club, were fashion mer-chandising majors or minors.

“It was a fun show to be in,” Samantha Slagle, one of the models in the show, said. “I want to work in fashion because I love shopping so much.”

The fashion show, which featured the work of three stu-dent designers and two styl-ists, was the club’s first fash-ion show.

The words “Art in Motion” can mean many things, but Saturday, April 30, it was a way to honor 16 students from the College of Arts and Humanities.

Every year, each depart-ment within the College of Arts and Humanities, includ-ing philosophy, music, English and mass communication and journalism, choose an undergraduate and graduate student to be selected. These students aren’t just selected

for any simple reason. They are chosen for their progres-sion as students and the work in which they excelled. Of course, some of the depart-ments, like theater arts, only have an undergraduate pro-gram, meaning only one stu-dent is nominated.

“This is probably the most important event produced by the college,” Jose Diaz, the associate dean, said.

Students must be gradu-ating either from a B.A. or M.A. program in order to get nominated by their depart-ment. The dean of the college

then chooses one undergrad and one graduate student to receive the dean’s medal. After winning the dean’s medal, the student must go up against all the other dean’s medalists cho-sen from the other colleges on campus. Then a student is cho-sen out of the pool of Dean’s Medal winners to receive the President’s Medal.

Not just anyone gets nomi-nated for the chance to win the Dean’s Medal.

“The department selects who has excelled in service, school and someone who has overcome a lot,” Diaz said. “A student who embodies what higher education means.”

The event started with a reception in the Conley Art Gallery.

“We held the reception there because of the art and design students have show-cased,” Diaz said.

The Dean Vida Samiian gave background information on each person who was nomi-nated as they made their way to the stage. Each nominee said a few words of thanks and for some, it was an emotional endeavor.

Day three of the 2011 NFL Draft was the biggest day for Fresno State hopefuls as two former Bulldogs heard their names called at the league’s annual New York City event.

Former Bulldog defensive end Chris Carter was picked with the 31st pick in 5th round by the Pittsburgh Steelers who lost to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV in February.

Even though Carter had to wait a long time to find out where he would be playing next season, it might work out in his favor with the Steelers making it to the postseason

three of the past four years. Also, they are the only team in the NFL with six Super Bowl titles.

It might not only be in Carter’s favor because the Steelers do get a productive player who was the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of Year last season.

He led the WAC with 11 sacks, which was only a half sack ahead of teammate Logan Harrell, and he also had 16.5 tackles for loss. He finished his career with 19.5 sacks and 36.5 tackles for loss.

Carter is projected to tran-sition to outside linebacker in the Steeler’s 3-4 defensive scheme after being a defensive end for most of his collegiate

career. The transition may work

out well with Carter being able to work with defensive master mind Dick LeBeau and his “Blitz-burgh” defense. Another factor that will help Carter in his transition is working with a veteran-laden defense with 2010 AP Defensive Player of Year Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, Lamar Woodley and James Farrior.

Car ter wasn’t the only former Bulldog selected on Saturday as former offensive lineman Andrew Jackson heard his name called with the 7th pick in the 7th round by the Atlanta Falcons.

Jackson is in good hands with the Falcons who led the NFC with a 13-3 record and made it to the divisional round of the playoffs.

After last season, there is a lot of promise in Atlanta with starting quarterback Matt Ryan entering his fourth sea-son as the head of the Falcon’s franchise. Also, they have All-Pro wide receiver Roddy White and recently-drafted Julio Jones out of Alabama.

With Ryan being so impor-tant to the Falcon’s franchise, it was important to help shore up the offensive line with the selection of the four-year starter.

Jackson had his senior sea-son shortened with an injury but was still selected as a first-team academic All-American.

Jackson was the last Bulldog selected in the NFL’s three-day event which left some notable ‘Dogs on the board, including former starting wide receiver Jamel Hamler who passed up his final year of eligibility to enter the draft and Ryan Colburn who started at quarterback the past two seasons.

H a m l e r a n d C o l bu r n ’ s chances of getting picked up by an NFL team is murky moving forward with the NFL owners and players going through a collective bargain-ing dispute.

With this taking place, NFL teams can’t talk to free agents which puts some for mer Bulldogs in a tough position until the dispute gets taken care of.

Fresno State still has 27 play-ers on NFL rosters with some of them being undrafted free agents.

SPORTSSPORTS EDITOR, BEN INGERSOLL • [email protected] 8 MONDAY, MAY 2, 2011

THIS WEEKThe Bulldogs men’s golf squad competes today, tomorrow and Wednesday in the WAC Championships in Las Vegas.

In a pivotal weekend conference series pitting the Western Athletic Conference’s top-two squads against each other, Hawaii has gotten the bet-ter of Fresno State — so far.

On Friday’s game Bulldog ace Greg Gonzalez lowered his season ERA after another masterful performance where he struck out 11, bringing his WAC-leading total to 88 in only 5 innings of work, but earned a no-decision.

“We scuffled in the first inning and after that buckled down, things just got away in the first,” Gonzalez said.

Hawaii jumped to an early lead with three unearned runs in the first inning, even though Gonzalez record-ed three strikeouts that inning. The Rainbows scored all three runs after Danny Muno committed an error that would have gotten the Bulldogs out of the inning.

Jordan Ribera, who had a batting average of .206 and only .130 with run-ners in scoring position going into the series, brought in Muno who was on second by hitting a home run for the second straight game and his fourth of the year, narrowing the gap at 3-2. Ribera later would add an RBI single in the third to give the Bulldogs their first lead, 4-3.

“I’m feeling a lot more comfortable at the plate and getting myself in better counts to hit,” Ribera said. “If I keep working at it good things will come.”

Cody Kendall came on in the sixth in relief of Gonzalez. The right-hand-er gave up the first earned for the Bulldogs when Zack Swasey hit a sin-gle to bring in Jeffrey Van Doornum from third. A sacrifice fly later in the inning gave the Rainbows back the lead, 5-4.

The Bulldogs tied it at five in the bot-tom of the eighth inning off the bat of Muno.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Bulldog relief pitcher Charlie Robertson threw a wild pitch to

advance Sean Montplaisir and brought home the winning score and gave Hawaii a 6-5 advantage in the top half of the 10th inning.

“Hawaii’s had us circled on the cal-endar since the schedule came out,” Ribera said following Friday’s loss. “We fought hard. We should have won that game. We just got to get up and do it tomorrow.”

Fresno State followed up the Friday night thriller with a disappointing 6-2 loss in Saturday’s matchup. The loss put the Dogs two-and-a-half games back in the WAC and dropped their overall record to 28-9.

Josh Poytress started the game for the Bulldogs and went 7.1 innings, allowing two runs. The Bulldogs gave up one run in the second inning on a solo shot from WAC Preseason Player of the Year Kolten Wong.

In the sixth inning Dusty Robinson hit his team-leading 11th home run of the season to make the score 2-1. A dou-ble by Andy Qualls in the seventh and a single by third baseman Andy Qualls tied the game at 2-2.

The ninth resulted in a big inning for the Rainbows who scored four unearned runs and scored a 2-0 series lead.

But Fresno State answered back in the third game Sunday afternoon, due in large part to Brennan Gowens’ big day at the plate. The junior was 3-for-3 at the plate and a triple short of hitting for the cycle.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning of play, but both teams hit a dry spell until the fifth. In the fifth inning, Hawaii reeled off two runs, but Fresno State knotted the score at 2-2 on a Gowens RBI single.
