ENGLISH II4th Quarter Book Project
FAMOUS AMERICANS SPEAK VOLUMES
OBJECTIVEThe student will research a famous American or historical icon that is famous for
having a positive influence on our society. The student will create a timeline ofthis persons life and use this persons legacy, career, or life experiences as theguiding scenarios in a book about this legendary person. The student willdemonstrate understanding of literary terms and devices by embedding 15terms of study within the dialogue, text, or captions of this book project. Thestudent will identify and explain each literary term or device in use.
COURSE LEVEL OBJECTIVES
READING: MAKING CONNECTIONS - text to world (text ideas and the world by analyzing andevaluating the relationship between literature and its historical period and culture)
READING: LITERARY TECHNIQUES - Identify and, explain literary techniques, in text emphasizingo understatement, parallelism, allusion
o analogy, analyze and evaluate literary techniques previously introducedo figurative language and sound devices previously introduced
WRITING: AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE - Compose text showing awareness of audience, choosing aform and point of view appropriate to purpose and audience
WRITING: IDEAS AND CONTENT - Compose text with strong controlling idea, relevant specificdetails, complex ideas, freshness of thought
WRITING: WORD CHOICE - Compose text using precise and vivid language, writing techniques,such as imagery, humor, voice, and figurative language
ACQUIRE INFORMATION - Locate and use multiple primary and secondary sources to selectrelevant and credible information, evaluate reliability of information, evaluate reliability ofsources
SOURCES CONSULTED - Document sources of information using a standard citation format

PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
1. Select your famous person after reviewing several reliable sources of informationregarding this persons claim to fame. Your chosen biographical study MUSTbe approved before you are to proceed with this project. If you are concernedthat your chosen person may not be seen as a positive influence on society, then

you are probably safe to assume that he or she will NOT be approved. There aremany other famous people to consider. Change your subject!
2. Draft an outline of scenarios, experiences, or career moments that portray yourchosen person in a positive light. These will become the content of your book.
3. Identify which literary terms or devices from the list above you will use in yourbook project. You must include a MINIMUM of 15 or your book will NOT bescored.
4. Locate real instances of your chosen persons usage of the literary terms ordevices you have selected. Research your subjects quoted material, written textin journals, diaries, or autobiographies, lyrics, speeches, or scripts. If REALmaterial cannot be found, then include realistic dialogue or context thataccurately portrays real events or moments that actually did occur.
5. Transfer these quoted original statements or similar context statements tospeech bubbles in a draft copy of your book project. Develop rough illustrationsin your draft that portray your subject AND secondary characters as appropriate.
6. Have your draft copy of your book reviewed by a classmate. Be sure to ask yourpeer reviewer to closely evaluate your accurate usage, identification, andexplanation of the literary terms or devices you have chosen to embed in yourbook project.
7. Create your final copy of your FAMOUS AMERICANS SPEAK LITERARY TERMSbook. Follow the guidelines below for the expected outcome:a. Your book MUST have a cover that is in COLORb. Your book MUST be 8 x 11 or larger NO smallerc. A Table of Contents must be included after the book cover. This TOC should
identify the 15 literary terms or devices used AND the page numberd. All pages in your book should be numbered in the top right-hand cornere. Your book pages can include TWO literary terms or devices on the same
page, but no more (1-2 terms per page ONLY).f. You may chose to use the back side of your pages but it is not required to
do sog. Each literary term or device must be addressed through character dialogue
or narrator subtexth. Each literary term must be identified and explained in a separate box on
the same page as used
i. All characters must be illustrated appropriately NO STICK FIGURES areallowed or your book will NOT be scored
j. Include scene additions such as props, scenery, people (such as crowds,peers, etc.)
k. ALL pages must be in colorl. A colored TIMELINE of your subjects life must be included at the end of
your bookm. Include at least TWENTY (20) entries on your timelinen. Your timeline MUST be hand drawn NO Internet printouts are allowedo. Your final page must be a BIBLIOGRAPHY page that includes at least 3
sources used during your research
p. Your BIBLIOGRAPHY must be typed and must follow MLA style (refer toonline citation builders such as http://www.easybib.com orhttp://www.knightcite.com )
