What is Biomass?Essentially, biomass is stored solar energy that man can convert to

electricity, fuel, and heat. Through photosynthesis the energy from the

sun is stored in the chemical bonds of the plant material; mainly residual

    waste

Residual biomass, organic waste produced by humansocieties. Within the residual group include:

Forest residues, generated by logging and forest clearing.

Agricultural residues: stems, branches, straw, prunings.

    Livestock waste: manure.

Industrial waste remains from slaughterhouses, lumber companies.

Municipal waste: solid (garbage) and sewage.

How biomass is converted into energy? The least expensive, most common, is simple and direct

combustion or burning of biomass to produce energy for

activities such how heating, cooking and electric power generation.

oBiomass: Organic matter originated in a biological

process, spontaneous or induced, can be used as an energy source.

oPhotosynthesis: is a process that converts carbon dioxide into organic

compounds, especially sugars, using the energy from sunligh.

oCombustion: is the sequence of exothermic chemical reactions between

a fuel and an oxidant accompanied by the production of heat and conversion of

    chemical species.

oElectricity: is a general term encompassing a variety of phenomena resulting

from the presence and flow of electric charge.

o Carbon dioxide is a chemical compound composed of two oxygen

atoms covalently bonded to a single carbon atom. It is

a gas at standard temperature and pressure and exists in Earth's

    atmosphere in this state.

o Organic Matter: Carbonaceous waste contained in plant or animal

matter and originating from domestic or industrial sources.
