But we do want you to be armed with knowledge so you can make your best choices to stay healthy!

Some topics could be triggering, and you don’t know the experiences of everyone else in the room, so it is very

important to be respectful.

Being sexually active is a decision made by

you and your partner(s).Negative consequences include:

STIs– Condom!Pregnancy– Birth control!

(and condoms are only 85% effective in preventing pregnancy

as commonly used)

Why does everyone need to know about birth control?

• If having penis-vagina sex:• Preventing pregnancy is a concern for both

partners• Show care• Less stress• Make sure partner is using method correctly

• Help friends who are at risk for pregnancy

What is the chance a female who has penis-vagina sex will become pregnant if

she doesn’t use birth control?

85% chance of becoming pregnant within a year

How does pregnancy happen?

Sperm fertilizes an egg & the egg implants into the uterus

Females who are sexually active & don’t want to get pregnant.

What if your partner doesn’t let you use birth control?

That’s abuse. It is your body and your right to protect yourself.

It is NOT OK for a partner to:• prevent you from using birth control• mess up your birth control• threaten you about birth control• lie about using birth control

Hormonal birth control

• Many methods• Provides a dose of female

hormones• Ovaries don’t release egg;

• School Clinic will start to do implants soon and can refer you to other teen clinics

Intrauterine Device (IUD)T-shaped piece of plastic that is placed in the uterus• Skyla – hormones – 3 years• Mirena – hormones – 5 years• Paragard – copper – 10 years

• Side effects: cramping, heavy period with Paragard, period can stop with Mirena & Skyla, irregular period in first few months

• Over 99% effective

• School Clinic does not put in IUDs, but we can refer you to other teen clinics

ShotA shot in the arm every 3 months– called Depo• Only need to remember appointment every 3 months• More private than other methods• Side effects: irregular bleeding & possible weight gain

(5 pounds in first year) • 94-99% effective depending on use

The Pill• Take one per day every day at same time• Many brands & combinations of hormones• 91-99% effective depending on use

PatchSmall square patch that women stick on body• Can put on arm, stomach, upper

back, or butt• Change patch once a week for 3

weeks• Don’t wear patch during fourth

week & get period• 91-99% effective depending on use

RingSmall flexible ring, inserted in vagina for three weeks straight• Keep in all the time, including during sex• During 4th week, remove the ring & get period• 91-99% effective depending on use

Emergency ContraceptionPill(s) that can be taken after unprotected penis-vagina sex; hormones delay ovulation & thicken cervical mucus • Not an abortion– does not stop an already fertilized egg from

implanting into the uterus

• Next Choice & Plan B work up to 3 days after unprotected sex– Up to 89% effective, decreases with time– Can buy Plan B at any age over the counter

• Ella – works up to 5 days after unprotected sex – 85% effective throughout the entire 5 days– Need prescription

Not having penis-vagina sex• Can choose this any time, with any person, for

any amount of time• 100% effective if there is no genital contact or

exchange of fluids
