    '10 CIAA FOOTBALL HONORS:Saint Augustine's running back Walter Sanders,

    Elizabeth City State defensive lineman Malcolm Jenkinsand Virginia State placekicker Justin Parker were the topindividual award winners for the Central IntercollegiateAthletic Association 2010 football campaign.

    Sanders was voted the league's offensive player of theyear after becoming the rst 1,000-yardrusher for the Falcons in the modernera and nishing the year as the toprusher in the conference with 1,377yards, averaging 137.7 yards per gamewhile averaging 5.0 yards per attemptin 277 carries. Sanders tied for secondin scoring with 15 touchdowns and 90points overall. He also tied for secondin all-purpose yards with 1,461 or 146.1

    yards per game. He was also ninth in total offense.Jenkins earned the defensive player of the year honor

    after leading the league in sacks with 13 (12 solo/2 assists)and in tackles for loss (14 solo/9 assists). He also postedfour fumble recoveries.

    Parker, named the CIAA's special teams player of theyear, topped the conference in eld goal accuracy hitting onall eight of his attempts with a long eld goal of 40 yards.He also hit on 32 of 34 point-after attempts.

    CHOWAN, KSU IN D2 VB PLAYOFFS:CIAA champion Chowan and SIAC champion Ken-

    tucky State will begin action this weekend in the NCAADIv. II Women's Volleyball playoffs.

    Chowan (22-12) is ranked eighth in the Atlantic Regionand will take on top seed Clarion (29-4) Friday, Nov. 19. TheAtlantic Regional is being hosted by Edinboro Universityin Edinboro, Pa. and will run from the 19th thru the 21st.

    Kentucky State (26-10) is seeded eighth in the SouthRegion and will take on that region's t op seed Tampa (26-3)on Thursday. Tamps is also the host of the regional whichwill be played Thursday thru Saturday, Nov. 20.

    To make up the 64-team playoff eld, eight teamswere selected from each of the eight regions: Atlantic,Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast andWest. Regional competition will be single-elimination, bestthree-of-ve-set matches and will not include a third-placematch.

    More champs crowned; Threeteams headed to D2 playoffs

    Champions of one sort or theother were crowned Saturday in theCIAA , MEAC and SWAC and sev-eral of them as well as others punchedtheir tickets to postseason play in awild weekend of results that leavesonly a couple of more matters to besettled.

    CIAA The CIAA staged the only true

    championship game last week andits winner will play on this week asthe 24-team NCAA Div. II playoffsget under way. Shaw scored a tight 14-7 winover Virginia State Saturday in

    Durham, N.C. (See story below).By virtue of the win, the Bears,ranked sixth in the NCAA Div. IISuper Region I before Saturday'sgame, moved up to fth in the nalregional rankings. They will travel to4th-ranked Shepherd (9-1) Saturdayfor a 12 noon rst roun d game.

    Shepherd, the WVIAC cham-pion, was undefeated and rankedrst in the region before dropping itsnal regular season game Saturdayto Glenville State, 28-24.

    The CIAA has yet to choose arepresentative for the Dec. 4 Pioneer

    Bowl in Columbus, Ga.

    SWAC East Division title Saturdayand Texas Southern took a big steptoward claiming its rst-ever WestDivision crown Thursday.

    Alabama State (7-3, 6-3 SWACE) defeated Southern 21-19 to winthe East and its spot in the Dec.11 SWAC Championship Game inBirmingham. The Hornets will bemaking their rst trip to the titlegame since 2005 and rst under headcoach Reggie Barlow. Texas Southern (7-3, 7-1)needed overtime to knock off BCSPNo. 1 and West Division leaderGrambling State 41-34 Thursdaynight putting Johnnie Cole's Tigersin the driver's seat for the divisiontitle.

    TSU hosts Arkansas-PineBluff (5-5, 4-4) Saturday (7 p.m.)needing a win to wrap up the divi-sion title and a championship gameberth opposite Alabama State. If theTigers lose, they need Southern toknock off Grambling in their seasonending battle at the Bayou Classicon Nov. 27 to earn the title.

    man's surprisingly difcult 35-20win over Howard Saturday gave theWildcats and rst-year head coachBrian Jenkins at least a share of the2010 MEAC title and the league'sautomatic berth into the FCS play-offs.

    The Wildcats (10-0, 7-0), whoalso moved up from No. 2 to thetop of the BCSP rankings, nishthe regular season with Saturday'sFlorida Classic in Orlando againstin-state rival Florida A&M .

    B-CU can win the MEAC titleoutright with a win over FAMU. A

    B-CU loss would put them in a two-way tie with FAMU (7-3, 6-1) anda three-way tie if South CarolinaState (8-2, 6-1) beats North Caro-lina A&T (1-9, 1-6) in its seasonnale Saturday (1:30 p.m.).

    SC State is in good position to bethe second MEAC team to make the20-team FCS playoff eld. A win overA&T will likely cement its inclusion .B-CU is up to seventh this week inthe Sports Network FCS national pollwhile SC State is 12th.

    In the rst quarter, Shaw had 10- and 11-playdrives that covered a total of 126 yards but wasstopped both times on downs in VSU territory. Theonly rst half score came on Shaws second pos-session of the second quarter when the Bears drove84 yards in 11 plays and scored on a RaymondWilliams one-yard run. Reid added the extra pointto give the Bears a 7-0 lead at the 6:11 mark thatthey took into the break.

    VSU, never nding an offensive rhythm,struggled to just 70 rst-half yards and just two rstdowns. When the Trojans did get on the board, itwas thru their defense. Late in the third quarter aftera Shaw drive stalled at the VSU 16, Reid's 33-yardeld goal attempt was blocked by Clifton Haney and scooped up by Alfred Ngauja and returned76 yards for a score. Justin Parker's PAT knot tedthe game at 7 with 5:38 left in the third period.

    Battle completed just 5 of 19 passes on theday for 46 yards with the three picks. The Trojansalso lost two fumbles. Rahoo Walker led the VSUrushing attack with 37 yards on six carries. VSUlinebacker Jeremy Pruitt amassed 17 tackles tolead the Trojan defense.

    Williams was Shaw's workhorse, carrying33 times for 117 yards. He was named Shaw'schampionship game MVP. Starting quarterbackKevin Atkins , who went out with an ankle injuryearly in the fourth quarter, was 16 of 28 for 183yards with one interception.

    South Division champion Shaw held NorthDivision champ Virginia State to 136 totalyards while piling up 412 yards of total offensebut still needed a fourth-quarter touchdownoff a turnover to come away with a 14-7 winin the CIAA's championship game before anenthusiastic crowd of 8,107 in Durham, N. C.Saturday afternoon.

    The title is Shaw's fourth in seven yearsand third in four years under head coach DarrellAsberry .

    Despite the yardage discrepancy, the gamewas 7-7 when Virginia States Sean Smithmuffed a punt at his own four-yard line with12:37 to go. Shaw (9-2) recovered at the VSU6 and needed just two plays to reach paydirt,scoring on back-up quarterback QuintonOdom's 2-yard plunge. Caleb Reid's PAT gavethe Bears a 14-7 lead with 11:59 left.

    After the kickoff, VSU (8-3) went on itslongest and most sustained drive of the day,going 54 yards in 11 plays gaining all theyards on the ground to reach the Shaw 12.From there on third-and-8, quarterback JaredBattle's pass into the end zone was picked off by Shaw's Gerald Kennedy .
