BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2010MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

This October Calderdale Council and some of its partners will be celebrating Black History Month across Calderdale. There will be a vibrant and diverse programme of events including films, art, sport, music and dance. Black History Month has been celebrated across the UK every October for over 30 years growing from strength to strength each year.

We feel our commitment to Black History Month recognises that there are differences in our communities. By putting on these events and activities we can ensure that we are all aware of these differences and that they really do matter to all of us.

Black History Month is a time to look at the achievements of the black and ethnic minority communities and celebrate their cultural identity. Black History Month is open to participation by everyone and is ideally developed, delivered and managed as an educational and historical awareness experienced by Black people – African, Asian and Caribbean heritage – and should be shared by everyone as world history.

Look out for ‘Black History Month’ programmes in your local libraries, museums, local radio station, press and council offices. I am proud to give my commitment to Black History Month and I hope you do too by attending as many of the events and activities that are available during the Month.

Yours faithfully

Councillor Ann McAllisterThe Mayor of Calderdale

Classical Northern Indian meets Western contemporary as two male dancers take to the stage. This duet sees the two divided, as one uses Kathak and the other adopts a more modern style of dance. Gradually they come together until they blend and blur so closely you won’t be able to tell the difference. Accompanied on stage by live music this piece looks at how two very different styles of dance can combine and create something new and even more fantastic. Watch a film of the rehearsal process, see the finished result and ask questions at the end to be a part of this fascinating event. This is a biopic of legendary soul and R n’ B singer Ray Charles. With this training, Ray eventually plays hisway into a major deal with Atlantic records and earns icon status as an American legend. The film, written by Spike Lee, follows a group of racially diverse inhabitants from Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood as they spend their day trying to avoid the oppressive heat. Lee’s film is an electric work of political entertainment that confronts sensitive racial issues head-on. He deftly blends humour and drama as well as using specific music to further amplifyhis theme (Public Enemy’s song ‘Fight the Power’ actually becomes the film’s main catalyst for action). Boldly closing the film with opposing quotes from Malcolm X and Martin Luther King on the nature of race relations, Lee leaves it up to the viewer to decide if Mookie’s actions were the correct ones.
