Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Samuel Coleridge-

Taylor was born on 15th August 1875 in Holborn Central London. He was Professor of Composition at Trinity College of Music and believed in the mixture of African sounds with traditional classic music.He fought racial prejudice all his short life.Sadly, Coleridge at the young age of 32.

OctoberOctober is Black history month

It’s a chance to remember, celebrate and admire the achievements of black people throughout Britain and the wider world.

However, we should remember and celebrate the achievements of black people every day of the year, not just in October.

Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz

She is the grandmother of Queen Victoria, and the great-great-great-great grandmother of the current Queen of the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II.

Charlotte's mother, Elizabeth Albertine, was the illegitimate daughter of Abram Petrovich Gannibal, and that Charlotte could therefore have been one-quarter Black.

Benjamin Banneker Originally known as Banna

Ka or Bannakay. Born November 9th 1731. Died October 9th 1806. Benjamin was taught to

read and do simple arithmetic by his grandmother and by a Quaker schoolmaster, who changed his name to Banneker.

Africa American, Mathematician, Astronomer, Clockmaker and Publisher.

Garrett A. Morgan

Born 1877 in Kentucky USA

He invented the traffic lights system we have to day and was the first man to own a car in his district

He also invented smoke protectors for firefighters.

John Love, William Purveys and Lee Barrage

Well, John Love invented the pencil sharpner, William Purveys invented the fountain pen and Lee Barrage the type writing machine

James Cleveland "Jesse“ Owens

Born September 12th 1913.

Died March 31st 1980. Was an American field

and track athlete. Participated in the

1936 summer Olympics in Berlin and Germany where he won 4 gold medals.

For 100 metres, 200 metres, long jump and as part of the 4x100 metres relay team.

Born September 26th 1981. American former world No.1

She is the last player, female or male, to have held all four Grand Slams at the same time.

An American tennis player. Venus holds the record for the

fastest serve ever recorded by a female in a main draw match (129mph).

December 1st, 1955 Rosa Parks became famous for refusing to obey bus driver James Blake’s order that she should give up her seat.

This started the Montgomery Bus Boycott, one of the largest movements against racial segregation.

David Lammy MP

David Lammy MP, Minister for Skills, is one of two black Ministers in Gordon Brown’s government.

He is also the Member of Parliament for Tottenham.

Dame Linda Penelope Dobbs QC, is the first black person to sit as a High Court judge. She says she will be "the first of many".

In England and Wales there are just nine black circuit judges amongst the 623.

Mary Jane Seacole Born 1805. Died May 14th 1881. Was a mixed-race British

nurse born in Jamaica. Taught herbal remedies

and folk medicine by her mother.

An expert at dealing with Cholera.

She heard about the terrible conditions of the Crimean War and moved to London to volunteer as a nurse.

According to Newton, her mother is a Zimbabwean Shona Princess.

She was raised in Zambia and Penzance, England, and educated at Downing College, University Of Cambridge.

designer. Born in Ghana in the late 1960s and brought up in north London, He attended Highgate Wood School.

Hattie was an American actress. She was the first black performer to ever win an Academy Award.

She won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role of Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939).

Josephine Baker

Is one of the world's most beloved entertainers.

Singer, Dancer and Actress.

Also noted for her commitment in the Civil Rights Movement in North America

After retiring she adopted her ‘Rainbow Tribe’, 12 orphans of different ethnicities and nationalities
