Inside Twelve Years a Slave: A Conversation with Clayton AdamsThe novel Twelve Years a Slave follows the personal account of Solomon Northup, a prominent free black
man living in upstate New York, who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841. Separated from his
wife and children, Solomon spent twelve long years of suffering, degradation, whippings and hard labor as
a slave in Louisiana before he was rescued. Join Clayton Adams, descendent of Solomon Northup, as hediscusses this heroic and very real story that has captured audiences throughout time.

Getting Started in African American Genealogy ResearchIf you’re trying to trace your African roots and are running into brick walls with do-it yourself genealogical
research or just don’t know where to begin, this session is for you! Marilyn Holt of the Carnegie Library of
Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Department will discuss various methods and library resources that can aid
those searching, with limited information, for ancestors who were enslaved or emancipated.

Smithfield Critics Book Discussion Group: A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. GainesIn a small Cajun community in the late 1940s, Jefferson, a young black man, is an unwitting party to a
liquor store shoot out. The only survivor, he is convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Grant Wiggins,who left his hometown for the university, has returned to the plantation school to teach. As he struggles
with his decision whether to stay, his aunt and Jefferson's godmother persuade him to impart his learning
and his pride to Je-erson before his death. The two men forge a bond as they come to understand the
simple heroism of resisting —and defying —the expected.
