fne cuisine and attentive service, with a breathtaking backdrop of

the ever-changing panoramas of Ireland’s celebrated scenic landscapes.

JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME

tep aboard to enter a whole new world of

indulgence: contemporary carriages inspired

by Dublin’s classic architecture, fne cuisine

enriched by local delicacies and a breathtaking, ever-

changing backdrop of Ireland’s celebrated landscapes.

Some days will begin with an early start, for example

when you visit the Giant’s Causeway before the crowds

arrive. Others commence with a visit to a celebrated

castle or an invigorating round of golf. However

action-packed the itinerary, you can be sure of restful

sleep as the train stops to stable each night.

Accommodating just 40 passengers in 20 beautiful

cabins, each named after an Irish county, the train

offers an intimate and fun experience, with onboard

entertainment as well as ample opportunities to make

new friends. You are sure to leave with a host of

magical memories.

THE CABINS There are fve

carriages offering 16 twin

All of the double cabins

cabin suitable for guests with

limited mobility, specifcally

THE DINING From wonderful

artisan cheeses and superb

smoked fsh to smooth

Irish whiskies, the onboard

Georgian feel in relaxed

greys and warm woods, and

Wexford, a light-flled space

enhanced with Irish motifs

and tweed fabrics.

THE OBSERVATION CAR

Blending the warm

atmosphere and elegance

of a Dublin saloon, the

Observation Car is the focal

point for making new friends

and listening to music or

storytellers bringing Ireland

to life, while gazing out of

the large windows at the

taste the country’s fnest

whiskies or a glass of stout.

Sensational cuisine, mesmerising views and convivial company

With a strong Irish favour to the fore, the train’s beautiful interiors

mix modern and traditional to sumptuous effect.

DESIGNED WITH A

LOCAL TOUCH

o create a genuine Irish

feel, the interiors of

Belmond Grand

Hibernian have been imbued

with features that recall Ireland’s

unique character and mythology.

Design company James Park

Associates worked closely with

local craftsmen and artisans to

create an unmistakeably Irish

ambience, refected, for example,

in Georgian Dublin-style panelling,

Celtic knot napkin rings and

tartans and tweeds from different

Irish counties.

The overall design is fresh, light

and contemporary yet underpinned

with tradition—mixing romance and

heritage with a breath of Irish air.

Colour plays an important role: the

Kerry-themed carriage boasts

shades of purple and blue; Leitrim

has accents of red; Waterford is

in green hues.

Restaurant car Sligo is a truly

exclusive dining space, its silver

accents, chrome fnishes and

upholstered leather chairs softened

by elegant local touches, such as

lace-like patterns in the curtains and

Waterford crystal vases.

In the Observation Lounge, a

slightly different approach has

been taken. Designed to evoke a

traditional Irish saloon, it features

a richer blend of timber, antique

mirrors and cut glass. Perfect for

enjoying the “craic”.

CASTLES AND KISSES

Ireland’s landscape is dotted with vestiges

of its past, from Iron Age forts to Christian

monasteries. But most magnifcent of all

are the castles. Whether atmospheric,

windswept ruins or beautifully restored

fortresses, all have fascinating tales to

tell. At the 15th-century Blarney Castle,

near Cork, visitors fock to bend over

backwards (literally) to kiss the mythical

Blarney Stone in the hope of being

blessed with magical eloquence.

FABULOUS FOLKLORE

The famous Giant’s Causeway refects

the Irish love of myths and legends. This

geological wonder, an area of around 4,000

perfectly interlocking basalt columns, looks

too perfect to be the result of a volcanic

eruption. More compelling is the legend of

the giant Finn MacCool laying down a path

across the sea in order to do battle with his

Scottish rival, Benandonner.

Ireland’s rich anthology of faerie folk

includes tiny, mischievous leprechauns,

believed to have pots of gold hidden in the

countryside and known for playing tricks

on people, and the rather more sinister

banshees, ghostly women whose hideous

screams are an omen of death.

Many tales surround pirates. The most

famous is 16th-century, fame-haired

“Queen of Pirates” Granuaile (otherwise

known as Grace O’Malley), a ferocious

sea captain known for pouring molten lead

on English troops.

With its lush green landscapes, mystical tales of old,

fabulous food and a wealth of literary and musical talent,

Ireland truly has something for everyone to enjoy.

WORLD-FAMOUS WORDSMITHS

Ireland’s literary prowess is legendary:

the island has produced no fewer than

four Nobel prizewinners—George

Bernard Shaw, WB Yeats, Samuel

Beckett and Seamus Heaney. Add to

that list Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde,

Oliver Goldsmith and James Joyce and

you have a pretty peerless line-up.

Dublin offers particularly rich pickings

for literature lovers, with themed walks

and pub crawls.

SOUNDS TO TAP TOES TO

With a harp as its national emblem, it’s no

surprise that music is the nation’s passion.

Passing pubs in Ireland you may hear

strains of lively folk music—fddles, futes,

bodhran drums and wonderful uilleann

pipes, as well as guitars and melodic voices.

On the contemporary front, Ireland has

produced a wealth of talent, including rock

giants Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy and U2

and international singers such as Sinead

O’Connor, Mary Black and Damien Rice.

In this land of reeling, jigging, ceilidhs and

feadhs, don’t expect to keep your feet still

for long. It’s hard to resist getting up to dance

and a surefre way of enjoying the “craic”.

UNIQUELY IRISH

Much of Ireland’s appeal is based on its

charming ancient traditions. The country was a

Gaelic-speaking nation until the 16th century and

many inhabitants do still converse in the rich,

guttural tongue. The Irish brogue itself is lilting

and lyrical, often considered one of the world’s

most attractive accents. This accent lends

itself well to another peculiar Irish tradition: the

limerick, a humorous, fve-line verse. “There was

a young lady of Cork, Whose Pa made a fortune

in pork…”. This jaunty (sometimes bawdy)

form of poetry dates from the 14th century and

refects the national laid-back sense of humour.

When it comes to celebrating, you’ll fnd

everything from the biggest nationwide

celebrations for St Patrick’s Day to specifc

events devoted to oysters in Galway or the arts

in Belfast. You can be sure all are vivacious Irish

Festivals with music, dancing or grand parades.

As for the landscape, you may never have

seen grass as green as that of Ireland and,

with such swathes of fertile pasture, farming

has always been a mainstay of life. Familiar

sights are sheepdogs rounding up their hardy

charges on the uplands and cows being

herded along country lanes by farmers.

Dry-stone walls marking out the felds are

a distinctive feature of the landscape.

TASTES SENSATIONAL

The Emerald Isle’s natural bounty

means the next tastebud tingle is

just round the corner. Try farl—soft,

doughy potato scones, delicious topped

with a poached egg or a dollop of jam.

If you’re a lover of fsh and seafood you will

relish the bounty of this island’s waters,

especially its famous oysters and mussels.

Feast on speciality cheeses such as

Gubbeen from West Cork, as well as

smoked fsh and charcuterie. Ireland is

famous for its stout, Guinness, which

frst started when Arthur Guinness leased

a disused brewery in Dublin in 1759.

Known as the “black stuff”, it can

be admired and tasted on a tour of the

Guinness Storehouse, or in any pub,

bar or restaurant. Equally famous are

the whiskeys the island produces, such

as Jameson, Midleton and Bushmills.

Do note, whiskey is written with an “e”

here. Make sure you show your

appreciation by spelling it the

proper Irish way!

Your Financial Protection: when you buy an

ATOL protected fight or fight inclusive holiday

arrangements.

On certain trips a minimum number of

If there are fewer than 12 passengers in your
