“There’s not a budding boy or girl, this dayBut is got up, and gone to bring in May”May begins in Taurus and ends in the signof Gemini. It’s named after the Greekgoddess Maia, identified with the Romangoddess of fertility, Bona Dea, whosefestival was held in May. It’s a time whentrees start to blossom, bringing joy and hopeafter winter - a time of love and romance. The 1st is May Day, with tradition of
dancing around the Maypole to mark theend of winter. May Day has it’s origins inpre-Christian days and so celebrations werediscouraged by the Church.May 4th is Star Wars Day (May the 4th
be with you!)The bird of May is the nightingale, its
birth flower is the lily of the valley orhawthorn and its birthstone is the emerald.
May is the only month in which aPresident of the United States has not died. The Mayday distress signal is nothing to
do with May. It derives from the French‘venez m’aider’ meaning ‘come to my aid’.The call is always given 3 times in a row toprevent mistakes.

Welcome to Spring...Historians think May is named after the GreekGoddess MAIA. It’s also identified with BONADEA, the Roman Goddess of Fertility. So letthere be love in our town this month!!!
Happy Birthday Bob Dylan... 72 on the 24th. Keep rolling on the Never Ending Tour, Bob!
I don’t know if he wrote this wondeful lyric sittingon North Pier one May morning, but it’s beautifuljust the same...
“May God bless and keep you always May your wishes all come trueMay you always do for others And let others do for youMay you build a ladder to the stars And climb on every rungMay you stay... forever young”
Also, 68 years ago, Hitler’s War finished, ending 6years of misery. So let’s celebrate Victory inEurope Day on the 8th.
And of course, this from the Bard himself...
“Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,And summer's lease hath all too short a date,Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,And often is his gold complexion dimmed,And every fair from fair sometime declines,By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimmed.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade”
Enjoy May in the best place on earth!
David Thorley Publisher
P.S. Here’s hoping for some HOT sun on Early May (6th) andSpring (27th) Bank Holidays!

Spring Bank Holiday
Monday 27th May
The 1871 Bank Holidays Act namedWhit Monday as one of four English
Bank Holidays.
In 1971 it was formally replaced by a fixed bank holiday
on the last monday in May.
Whit Monday or Pentecost Monday is the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday.
It takes its name from following ‘White Sunday’ where candidates for baptism wear white garments.
This year Whit Sunday falls on Sunday 19th May.

Why is Jesus standing in the
midst of clouds, erect and bold
as a king, arms upraised in
blessing?
Perhaps the answer is found inLuke 24:50-53, where the Bibletells us how Jesus ascended toheaven in the very action ofblessing His disciples.
Ascension Day is one of the signals that the Easter season is coming to an end. As it falls on a Thursday it is often ignored. Ascension Day, however, remembers the last dayon earth of our Saviour. Just as Jesus was broughtto this life by the miracle of the Holy Spirit atChristmas, Jesus leaves this earth by the miracleof ascension into heaven after promising us thesame powerful Holy Spirit in our lives.
“As we Christians live out our years in this age of the Holy Spirit, let us worship the ascended
King in all His glory.”

Coming up...
May Day was a traditional springtime holiday inmany pre-Christian European pagancultures. The arrival of summer wascelebrated by dancing around a Maypole made of birch or haythorn. It was also a time to appoint a ‘MayQueen’.
Maying is the custom of collectingspring flowers, particularly hawthornblossom.
The gathering of knots of flowers inspired the children’s ryhme ‘here wego gathering nuts (knots) in May’.
Parliament established the first Monday in May as one of eight English Bank Holidays in 1971.

Jack in the Green is a participant in traditional English May Day parades.
In the 16 & 17th centuries, garlands of flowers and leaves weremade for the May Day celebration. After becoming a source ofcompetition between Works Guilds the garlands became moreelaborate, eventually covering the entire man. This became knownas Jack in the Green.
By the turn of the 19th century the custom had started to wane, the Victorians disapproving of such bawdy and anarchicbehaviour. The Lord and Lady of the May with their practicaljokes were replaced by a pretty May Queen. There was no placefor the drunken, noisy Jack in the Green.
Jack in the Green has been revived in Whitstable, Kent in 1976and continues to lead an annual procession of Morris dancersthrough the town on the May Bank Holiday. A separate revivaloccurred in Hastings in 1983 and has become a major event inHastings Old Town calendar. Ilfracombe in North Devon has hada Jack in the Green procession and celebration since 2000.

or Whit Sunday. The Church celebrates the gift of the
Holy Spirit. Pentecost falls on the Sunday 50 days
after Easter. It is regarded as the birthday of the
Christian church. Traditionally a time of baptism, the
name Whit Sunday, or White Sunday, derives from
the custom of wearing white while being baptized.
Christians believe that Jesus instructed his disciples
to carry on his work and promised to send God's
Holy Spirit to inspire, comfort, and guide them.
According to the New Testament, the disciples felt
the Holy Spirit's presence during the Jewish feast of
Shavuot (known as Pentecost in Greek).
A strong wind filled the house where they were
gathered, and tongues of fire spread out
and touched each one of them.
Pentecost Sunday 19th May
“In the beginning there was nothing.
God said, 'Let there be light!' And there was light.
(There was still nothing, but you could see a whole lot better.”)

Bring me Sunshine, in your smile,Bring me Laughter, all the while,In this world where we live, there should be more happiness,So much joy you can give, to each brand new bright tomorrow,
Make me happy, through the years,Never bring me, any tears,Let your arms be as warm as the sun from up above,
Bring me fun, bring me sunshine, bring me love.Words - Sylvia Dee, Music - Arthur Kent
In May 1952, BOAC became
the first airline to introduce
a passenger jet,
the de Havilland Comet. All Comet 1 aircraft were grounded in April 1954 after four Cometscrashed, two belonging to BOAC. Investigators discovered structural cracks caused by metal fatigue due to the repeated pressurization and depressurization. While rectifying this problem,de Havilland engineers improved the Comet in many ways andimproved its range, creating the Series 4. In October 1958, BOAC used the new Comets to become the firstairline to fly jet passenger services across the Atlantic. In 1972 the British Airways Board was formed, a holding boardthat controlled BOAC and BEA. Two years later, both the BOACand BEA were dissolved and their operations merged to formBritish Airways.BOAC would have become one of the first operators of the Concorde had it not merged to become British Airways. (BA'sConcordes carried registrations of G-BOAA through G-BOAG.)BOAC is mentioned in the first line of The Beatles song "Back inthe USSR":"Flew in from Miami Beach BOAC, didn't get to bed last night."

THE PLUMBERPHONE ADAM TODAY
Operation Chastise was one of the most daring raidsof the war. Undertaken by 617 Squadron on the moonlit night of17th May 1943, it was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson. 617Squadron attacked three huge German dams on the rivers Mohne,Sorpe and Eder.
The Mohne was breached, its power station swept away and floodwaters spread 50 miles into the Ruhr valley. The Eder, Europe’s largestdam, was breached in two places, damaging rail & road bridges. TheSorpe was undamaged.
The cost to the squadron was enormous. 8 of the original 19 Lancaster Bombers were damaged or shot down. 133 men took part.53 were killed and 3 taken prisoner.34 decorations were made to members of the squadron. For his leadership, Gibson received the Victoria Cross. He died, shot down in action, the following year, aged 26. 617 Squadron currently operates the Tornado GR4 from RAFLossiemouth in Scotland.
