Blakeborough ControlsASME B16.34 CHOKE VALVE

Description

The body/bonnet seal is a high integrity metallic Cseal. The seal loading is obtained from high dutybolting designed to ASME VIII during installationand is pressure energised by the process fluid.

The trim design is cage guided with either solid orbalanced plug design. The cage and seat areclamped into the body to give easy access and easyremoval. The cage can house from 1 to 3 pressurereducing sleeves.

The packing system incorporates a scrapper ring toprevent the ingress of sand to the stem seal. Thestem seal is specially designed low emission packingincorporating 3 self/pressure energised ‘U’ seals.

As a minimum seat faces are stellited however, forhigh service chokes the plug and seat will normallybe manufactured from tungsten carbide oradvanced ceramic. On single phase clean servicesthe seat/plug faces are tapered. On multi-phaseduties and contaminated services a shrouded seatdesign is used to protect the seat faces from theerosive flow. This design directs the flowimpingement away from the valve plug seating face, and the increased deadband and direction of flowprotects the valve.

Features

Blakeborough Controls API 6 A HIGH DUTY / SUBSEA CHOKE VALVE

Description

The body/bonnet seal is a clamped connection witha hub style seal ring. Sealing integrity is enhancedby applying an inconel overlay to the body andbonnet sealing areas on carbon steel valves.

The trim arrangement is a cage guided designavailable in both solid and balanced configuration. On sub-sea designs the trim is attached to thebonnet forming a cartridge, simplifying retrieval formaintenance.

The packing system incorporates a series of stemscrapper rings to prevent the ingress of sand to thestem seal. The stem seal is specially designed lowemission packing incorporating 3 self/pressureenergised ‘U’ seals.

As a minimum seat faces are stellited, however, forhigh service chokes the plug and seat will normallybe manufactured from tungsten carbide oradvanced ceramic. On single phase clean servicesthe seat/plug faces are tapered. On multi-phaseduties and contaminated services a shrouded seatdesign is used to protect the seat faces from theerosive flow, see protected seating detail opposite. This design directs the flow impingement away fromthe valve plug seating face, and the increaseddeadband and direction of flow protects the valve.

Features

Blakeborough ControlsCHOKE VALVE APPLICATION

Choke valves are required to handle some of themost severe operating conditions:- pressure dropsof up to 500 bar, with erosive fluid mixtures ofhydrocarbon liquids, hydrocarbon gases, sea waterand sand.

The problems associated with this application areflow erosion to the valve body, valve trim and thedownstream pipework, vibration and noise. Therange of products used on this application rangefrom the bean type choke with a fixed area, toneedle and seat designs which are high recoveryand multistage trims.

Consider a fluid passing through a simple orifice(bean) choke. Under high pressure drop conditionsthe fluid pressure drops rapidly below its vapourpressure thereby producing vapour bubbles. As thefluid recovers downstream of the orifice eithercavitation or flashing can occur depending onwhether the downstream pressure is higher orlower than the fluid vapour pressure. If the pressureis lower than the vapour pressure, flashing occurs, and this can cause erosion damage in thedownstream pipework. If the downstream pressureis higher than the vapour pressure then as thepressure recovers vapour bubbles formed duringthe throttling process are no longer in equilibriumand will collapse (or implode) resulting in very highforces being generated. This energy release canresult in significant erosion damage, and extensivenoise and vibration problems. On high recoverydesigns and on severe applications whole sectionsof metal can be eroded away, affecting the pressureintegrity of the valve body and downstreampipework.

On gas flows high uncontrolled velocities can resultin shock waves/turbulence interaction leading tohigh noise levels and vibration problems.

Blakeborough Controls CHOKE VALVE SELECTION

Choke Valve Selection Guidelines

When specifying choke valves it is critical that thecorrect size, trim design and materials are selectedto ensure a satisfactory life and operation of thevalve.

Our philosophy is to control the energy dissipationwithin the valve and not to pass the problem on tothe downstream pipework.

In the selection process the following considerations/calculations are made and recommended limits onvelocity and pressure drop for trim materialfollowed.

Cavitation Index

Used on liquid service applications to indicatepotential for cavitation. A positive value indicatescavitation. It is normally recommended to eliminatecavitation, however, for intermittent use a low level,<0.5 bar, would be acceptable.

Inlet Velocity & Outlet Velocity

These velocities are limited as per the tables. Thereason for limiting to these values are to minimisevalve body erosion and to minimise the potential forinstability and vibration.

On gas/vapour flows the outlet Mach Number isfurther limited depending on acceptable noise level. For noise levels less than 85 dBA the outlet MachNumber should be limited to <0.3, for noise levels85 dBA - 95 dBA the outlet Mach Number should belimited to 0.5.

Sound Pressure Level

Noise predictions are carried out in order to ensurenoise limits are not exceeded and the energyconversion is dissipated over the correct number ofstages of let-down.

Pressure drop limitations

The above limits are used for liquid serviceapplications to minimise erosion rates. As a generalrule on clean gas/vapour service the stage pressuredrops can be doubled.
