Alone or Together

When you think of charitable work, you often think of groups of peoplegathered together to work on a problem. But have you thought that each of these groups is made up of individuals? Without each individual making his or her contribution toward the group effort, nothing would be accomplished. Both individual and group efforts are important.

Think about the tasks shown in the chart. Suggest actions that oneperson—maybe you—could take to help accomplish the task. Then suggest actions that would take the combined efforts of a group of people. End by answering the question at the bottom of the page.

Would you rather work as an individual or as part of a group to help carry out Jesus’ mission? Why?

The Holy Spirit in the Modern Church

When the Holy Spirit came upon the apostles at Pentecost, they recognizedthat something wonderful was happening. Suddenly, they heard a greatnoise like the wind and they were able to speak in different languages. Many artists have depicted this dramatic scene. One example of such art is in your textbook.

The Holy Spirit continues to be with the Church today. The Holy Spiritunites Christ’s followers, brings them God’s love, and gives them the powerto continue to proclaim Jesus’ message. In the space below, draw a pictureof or write about the Holy Spirit at work in the modern Church. For example, you might draw church members in prayer with flames over their heads thatrepresent the Holy Spirit. Some symbols of the Holy Spirit include water, flames, clouds, and a dove.

Exploring the Scrutinies

During the season of Lent, the Church has special rituals, called scrutinies, for catechumens—people who will be baptized into the Catholic Church atEaster. The scrutinies give catechumens a chance to search their conscienceand to grow in their knowledge of Christ the Savior. Each scrutiny includes a reflection on one of the Bible passages shown below. The First Scrutinyfocuses on the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well. Thesecond relates to the story of Jesus and the man born blind. The thirdinvolves reflection on Jesus’ raising of Lazarus from the dead.

Read the three Scripture passages in your Bible, and answer the following questions.

The Woman at the Well (John 4:4–42)

How does Jesus help the Samaritan woman?

Who does Jesus say he is?

Why is this a good story for catechumens to reflect on during Lent?

The Man Born Blind (John 9:1–41)

How does Jesus help the man born blind?

Who do people say Jesus is?

Why is this a good story to reflect on during the Lenten journey of self-evaluation?

Journey with Jesus

Lent is a time for Catholics to reflect on Jesus’ journey into the desert and their own journey through life. During Lent weprepare our hearts for the celebration of Easter, just as Jesusprepared himself for his death and Resurrection. How is yourfaith journey similar to that of Jesus? What can you learn from Jesus’ journey that will help you? Consider the following questions.

1. Jesus went to the desert to pray. Where do you go to reflect and pray? Why?

2. Jesus fasted so that he could better concentrate on God. What can you give up that will help you focus your attention on God?

3. Jesus was tempted with fame, wealth, and power. What temptations do you face sometimes?

4. Jesus overcame temptation by remembering the word of God. What could help you overcome temptation?

The apostles came to know Jesus during the three years of his public life. From him, they learned how to live as Christians. In turn, we can learn fromthe apostles’ example. Ask yourself how you could imitate the apostles. For instance, many of the apostles were martyrs. You will probably never be asked to give up your life for your faith, but you may sometimes becriticized or excluded when you stand up for your values. The example ofthe apostles’ martyrdom can help you have the courage to accept hurtfulconsequences for acting on your beliefs.

2. When Jesus was dying on the cross, John accepted the responsibility of caring for Mary, the mother of Jesus.
