Tigers Slide late in 2012 State Championship

The Tenaha Tigers had a tall task Thursday as they once again faced the Munday Moguls whom they defeated 52-28 , just one year ago, to win the 2011 1A DII Texas State High school foot-ball Championship.

This year’s game fea-tured an unbeaten 14-0 Munday team who were heavily favored and av-eraged more than 58 points per game. The Moguls also average an offensive output of al-most 500 yards (470 total yards per game).

The Moguls signal caller, Dee Paul is a high-ly touted recruit who is being sought out by major colleges such as, SMU, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

The Tigers came into the contest with a 10-4 record with all four loses coming in pre-district contest. Tenaha averaged 38 points per game com-ing in. The Tigers were on an eight game win-ning streak and averaged 352 yards per game.

This game started out close. The Moguls gained the lead twice in the first half only to have the Tigers catch back up. Scoring started at the 9:34 mark of the first period when Dee Paul scored on a 52 yard touchdown run. Mogul, Roddrick Taylor added a 2 point conversion and Munday went up 8-0.

Tenaha bounced back when Tyre Barnes recov-ered a Munday fumble at the Mogul 30 yard line. The Tigers then drove to the goal line where Chavis Gregory pounded the ball into the end zone on his second attempt from 1 yard out. Tiger,

Javier Uribe nailed the extra point and Tenaha trailed by a narrow 8-7 point margin with 4:15 left in the second quarter of play.

The Moguls Roddrick Taylor scored next with 2:20 left in the first half to make the score 14-7 in Munday’s favor.

The Tigers bounced back with only 45 seconds left in the first half when DeAndre Thomas caught a twelve yard touchdown from Junior Hill. This tied the score at 14 points apiece, after Uribe added the extra point for Tenaha.

The Tigers were able to hold Munday in check un-til 5:31 of the third period when Roddrick Taylor scored on an 18 yard run. Moments later Munday scored once more when Junior Hill threw his 20th interception of the year to L.J. Collier who returned it 35 yards for a Moguls touchdown to make the score 28-14 in the Moguls favor. The Moguls scored twice more on Dee Paul runs of 55 and 60 yard runs giving the Moguls a 42-14 victory.

Tenaha rushed for 123 yards. The Moguls ac-cumulated an impressive 469 yards. Chavis Greg-ory led the Tigers on the ground with 116 yards. Dee Paul led the Moguls rushing with 269 yards.

Junior Hill threw 19 passes completing 8 for 98 yards, 1 for a touch-down, two were intercept-ed. Dee Paul completed 1 pass, out of 7 attempts, for 14 yards.

The Tenaha Tiger com-munity is rightfully proud of their Tigers who have, the past two seasons, won the 2011, and valiantly defended the 2012 1A Division II Texas State Football Championships.

Texas’ Best Basketball Programs Descend on Tenaha

4th Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Classic Returns December 27-

Over three days and in five different sites, some of the best small school basketball programs in Texas will arrive in the Piney Woods for the 4th Annual Holiday Hoops Scholarship Classic. Panola College, Joaquin ISD, Gary ISD, the Tenaha Tiger Gym, and the Tenaha Special Events Center will play host to a 60 game tournament bracket featuring a wealth of playoff contenders in Texas. Last year’s event champions the White Oak Roughnecks and the Saltillo Lady Lions return to defend their titles. These two programs are rich in tradition and success as the Roughnecks are the defending Class 2A State Champions and the Lady Lions are 3-time winners of the Holiday Hoops Tournament and undefeated in the Special Events Center all time.

Joining the defending champion Roughnecks on the boys’ side are a number of schools that qualified for Regional tournaments a year ago including host school Tenaha, Lipan, Laneville, Woden, Kountze, and the Tiger’s Regional rival Cayuga. San Augustine’s Wolves are also joining the fray with a top 10 Class A program along with perennial playoff powers Saltillo, Leggett, Central Heights, Martinsville, Slocum, Avery, and Chi-reno. Rounding out the boys’ field is a very strong and playoff worthy Joaquin squad (just down from 2A), and an upcoming group from Alto.

In their quest for a 4th straight title, the Saltillo Lady Lions (ranked #2 by TABC) will have to overcome Regional foe and defending Class A State Runner-Up, Lipan (ranked #1 by TABC). These two powers highlight another great field and are joined by Class 2A top 10 ranked Tatum and Class A’s number 5 ranked Slocum. Other members of a great playoff deep field include host Tenaha, Cayuga, Avery, Harleton, Elysian Fields, Leggett, San Augustine, Chireno, White Oak, Whitewright, Sabine, and Joaquin.

Seeing great basketball isn’t the only attraction at Holiday Hoops. The renowned Tiger Café returns with a great menu at great prices. Fried Shrimp, Catfish, Barbeque, Chicken Fried Steak are all items served up for your enjoyment. It’s simply the best.

Holiday Nursing Center in Center, TX is proud to have 2 Tenaha Tiger Alumni in their facilities. Greg McClure graduated Tenaha ISD in 1973. He was a wing back and wide receiver and proudly wore #22. He was All-District 4 years in football and basketball. Buddy Townsend graduated Tenaha ISD in 1940. He played tight end for the mighty Tigers and won several awards in football and basketball. He is a proud member of the THS Hall of Honor! These men were so excited to be able to attend this special football game. Mr. Townsend said he didn’t think he would ever get to watch his Tigers play again. He and Mr. McClure were very grateful to Mr. Eric Kohler from Holiday Nursing Center and his wife Mary and CNA Alexis for bringing them to this special event!

2011 State Championship ring bearers were there to watch their Tigers try and defend their 2011 Title. They stood on the sidelines and cheered the Tigers on! L to R: Reginald Davis, Shaquille Mitchell, Kobe Steadman, Tootie Horton & Octavious Griffith.

Also found on the sidelines were alumni Robert Barton, Chip Roberson and Vernon Mize. They were all proud Tigers in High school and still support their Tenaha Tigers!
