2. BMI Analysis: The 3 Pillars Total Analysis
BMI’s integrated methodology:
• combining macroeconomic, political risk, capital markets, and industry analysis
with…
• a pan-regional/global strategy
‘TA’ is ultimately about offering a holistic perspective. We look at factors which other economists don’t. We are the only research house with strong competencies across macroeconomics, political risk, capital markets and industry, and we leverage off of
that immensely by combining all the analysts into a single research team.
Business Monitor International
BMI’s integrated methodology:
• The outcome? Investor-focused strategic analysis. We look for
Relative Value – explaining the relative significance of risks and opportunities – to formulate growth strategies for corporate clients and
strategic and tactical investment ideas for financial clients
• The benefit? By ensuring the integration of our bottom-up,
country-specific analysis with our top-down global views we are able to be consistent, reliable and ahead of the curve in terms of identifying
market opportunity and risk
2. BMI Analysis: The 3 Pillars Total Analysis
Business Monitor International
• Always thinking like an investor, focusing on finding opportunities and managing risk
• Our analysis is designed to provide value-added and actionable strategies
for a broad range of firms. We don’t report the news and we are not a think tank
• BMI is in a fantastic position to leverage off of our historical specialisation in emerging markets
• With our holistic global strategy and unparalleled coverage of EM, we are capturing the rapidly growing market for investors looking to re-define their growth strategies and re-orienting towards new economies.
2. BMI Analysis: The 3 Pillars Investor Focused
Business Monitor International
Our investor focused Total Analysis, does not come at the
expense of the breadth of our coverage:
• We provide comprehensive coverage for more emerging markets than all of our competitors systematically providing hundreds of forecast data points and regular political risk, macroeconomic, capital market and industry analysis
• We are the only major research house to systematically cover 22 industry verticals
• We are the only major research house to cover the Caribbean and Central America, we were the first to cover Kosovo and we cover the most African states and frontier markets worldwide. We treat frontier markets the same way we treat EMs in terms of indentifying Industry opportunities and risks
2. BMI Analysis: The 3 Pillars Systematic Coverage

3. The Integration of Macro and Micro Practical Examples of Total Analysis
Macro Affecting Micro
Qualitative: Identifying Relative Value
• With global trade volumes weakening, we prefer Asia’s domestic demand stories in H210 and 2011. A favourable growth story for Indonesia and Sri Lanka make these among the favourite EM and frontier picks for our Consumer team
Quantitative: Influencing Industry Forecasts
• Macroeconomic variables feed into our Industry regression models. Variables used depend on the prevailing features of the Industry being examined.
Business Monitor International
Micro Affecting Macro
• Major Industry investments or structural changes in Industry strategy can have a massive impact on economic growth forecasts. This relationship is particularly apparent in the case of smaller and less diversified economies. For example, the development of ‘Floating LNG’ could mean a significant reduction in investment in on-shore refining infrastructure by energy companies
• Substantial stock market exposure to a particular Industry leaves index performance exposed to Industry growth. The same is true of company exposure on more consolidated exchanges
3. The Integration of Macro and Micro Practical Examples of Total Analysis

5. Methodology - FAQs
How do you source your data?
- We use publicly available data sources, prioritising national level sources (national banks, government ministries, industry associations)
- Where gaps in our data occur we use multilaterals or global industry associations
- We also use data from these sources to benchmark and check local sources
- We also use company information to a) provide bottom-up market size data and b) to assist with short-term forecasting and assessing market sentiment
- In some instance, where full time series data is not available, we use a combination of the above, coupled with industry expertise, to model industry data
How do you generate your forecasts?
-We have a two-pronged forecasting approach
- We use econometric regression models, incorporating indicators (Macroeconomic, Industry and Commodity) which have a strong historical correlation to the data being analysed.
- We then employ analyst intervention to ensure that the automated forecasts make commercial sense.
- This investor-focused approach to forecasting differs from a purely academic approach employed by some forecasters, but is vital in providing investors with actionable, ‘real-world’ intelligence.

5. Methodology - FAQs
How often do you update your forecasts?
- Forecasts are examined daily in response to major Industry developments, data releases and
company financial results releases
- Developments which warrant forecast amendments will be covered within our Daily Analysis
thus providing written analysis to contextualise data updates
- Any major changes to data on which a forecast is regressed will prompt us to update our
forecasts (thus quickly capturing precisely how macroeconomic developments or events in
another industry impact these industry forecasts)
- In the event of no major industry developments, or no changes to the data on which a forecast
is regressed, all forecasts are scrutinised and republished quarterly to ensure that they still
accurately represent our market, regional and global views
- Likewise, the analytical write-up of our forecasts is scrutinised and amended at the very least
quarterly
- This is vital, even in the event of no change to our forecast, as it enables us to reassess and
communicate to our clients any upside or downside risks that we potentially see impacting our
forecasts in the future
