Parsha Question of the Week:

HAKHEL

Moshe wrote this Torah and gave it to the Kohanim ... the bearers of the Ark of

the Covenant of G-d, and to all the elders of Israel. And he instructed them saying, at the

end of seven years, at the time of the Shemitta year, on the festival of Succos ... you shall

read this Torah before all of Israel.... Assemble the nation, men women and children ... that

they shall hear and learn.... (Devarim 31:9-12)

This Mitzvah, known to us as Hakhel, is referred to by the Talmud (TB Sotah 41a)

as the Parshas HaMelech, the King's chapter, because it was the King who was given this

Mitzvah of reading the Torah to the people. Yet if we look here in the Parsha we find no

apparent indication that Moshe is indeed addressing the King. In fact, it seems quite clear

that the Mitzvah is upon the Kohanim. And is it not logical that it would be the Kohanim -

as the spiritual leaders of the Jews - that should have this Mitzvah, rather than the King?

What is the source for the understanding that it is indeed the King's Mitzvah? And upon

whom did this Mitzvah fall in the years before the establishment of the Jewish monarchy?

This year, as we are immediately post-Shemittah, would be the year of Hak-

hel! As such, we will bez"h be learning more about this Mitzvah during Succos.

CANDLELIGHTING FOR YOM KIPPUR

As Melacha is forbidden on Yom Kippur, the procedure for candlelighting is as on

Shabbos, i.e. we light before reciting the Bracha.

Common custom is to light candles at home, with the home prepared as for

Shabbos, with clean tablecloths and the like. It is ideal to recite the Bracha on these can-

dles. In addition to these candles, it is customary to light a 24-hour candle for the man of

the house, as well as a Yizkor candle if one has lost their father and/or mother. One Yizkor

candle for each set of parents is sufficient. These 24-hour candles should be used to light

the Havdala candle on Motzei Yom Kippur.

Many are accustomed to light candles in shul. This may be done in addition to

the candles lit at home, as there is some question regarding the recitation of a Bracha

over the candles lit at shul. It should be noted however that many have the long-standing

custom of lighting their Yom Tov candles in shul, with the Bracha.

If one lights candles at home and wishes to drive to shul afterwards, they must

explicitly state that they do not with to accept Yom Tov with the lighting. In this situation,

they should not recite the Shehecheyanu Bracha when lighting, but should say it with the

congregation at Kol Nidrei.

Dear Friends: I hope this note finds you well, and that you had a meaningful and uplifting Rosh Hashana. This year's Arba Minim sale is different than usual, due to the Shemittah. As you know, Shemittah fruits are not to be sold as commodities, and as such the Esrogim are not conventionally sold this year. The mechanism through which we have received them is the Otzar Bais Din, a set up where the fruit itself is "free", but we pay the farmers and middlemen for the work in-volved harvesting it, packaging it for delivery, and other related costs. So here is how this year will be different in our shul sale. While we usually has varied prices for different quality Esrogim, this year all of our Esrogim will be sold for one price. While there are leniencies that could be employed to sell at different prices this year as well, we have decided that for the sake of a more pure observance of Shemittah, we will sell all of the sets for the same price. This choice will negatively affect the shul's profits from the sale, but it is a small price to pay for the precious Mitzvah of Shemittah. We appreciate your support of the shul at all times, and through the annual Arba Minim Sale. Gmar Chasima Tova! Rabbi Moshe Hauer
