Attending the Fort LauderdaleInternational Boat Show can beoverwhelming unless you have aplan.

With six sites, more than 1,200exhibitors andmiles of docks, youneed tobeprepared soyoucangetthemost value and enjoyment outof the show.

When togo: The firstthing youneed to deter-mine is whichday or days togo.

The showalways openson a Thurs-day, which isknown asPrime TimePreview. If

youwant tobeamong the

first several thousand people tosee the show, then you’ll pay theprime-timeprice of $36per ticket.

If being first isn’t an issue, butyou are looking to make a majorpurchase, then a two-day ticketfor $38 is your best bet. Good forany two of the next four days oftheshow, it allowsyoutocompari-son shop for a boat, engine, elec-tronics, safety gear, jewelry, art-work or clothing, then come backafter you’ve had time to processeverything and make a final deci-sion.

Thursday is often quite busy atthe show, but Saturday and Sun-day are traditionally the busiestdays.Monday is the least crowdedday and some exhibitors offer re-ducedpriceson their goods just so

they don’t have to pack them upand lug themback home.

What to wear: You want todress comfortably for the show.On a hot and sunny day at theoutdoor venues, you’ll want light-weight clothing, a hat and sun-screen — you’d be surprised howscorched you can get walkingalong the docks. If you’re stayingin the air-conditioned BrowardCounty Convention Center, youdon’t have toworry about that.

You alsowant towear comfort-able shoes because you might bedoing a lot of walking. If you planon going on boats, you’ll wantshoes that are easy to take off andput back on because most exhibi-tors will not let you wear shoes —even boat shoes — on their boats.If you’rewearing socks,make surethey’re clean anddon’t haveholes.

Ticket savings: It’s best to buyyour boat show tickets in advance.By getting them online at show-management.com, you won’thave to wait in line to buy them atthe show, plus you’ll save $2 perpurchase (so an adult ticket is $18instead of $20 and the two-dayticket is $36). Click on the IGFASchool of Sportfishing seminarson the boat show website for aneven bigger discount.

Parkandcruise:Getting to theshow can be easy or maddening.The basic rule of thumb is to parkas far away from the Bahia MarYachting Center, which is theheart of the show, as youcan. StateRoad A1A by Bahia Mar is usuallyjammedwith cars and so is South-east17thStreetCausewaynear theconvention center, which has aparkinggarage that fillsupearly inthe day.

The best options are to parkoff-site at War Memorial Audito-rium or in downtown Fort Lau-derdale and take one of the freeshuttle buses to the show. Thebuses start running at 9 a.m., anhour before the show opens eachday, and continue until an hourafter the showcloses each day.

The most enjoyable way to getto the show is by parking in one ofthecityorprivate lotsorgaragesattheLasOlasRiverfront and takingthe free riverboat to Bahia Mar.The riverboat captains often pro-vide an entertaining and inform-ative narrative of the route’s his-tory andhomes.

Get connected:Once you’re atthe show, you can map out theexhibitors you want to see withthe show program. Or, if you havean iPhone or Android smartphone, you can download the freeMyBoatShowapp.

The app lets you search forboats by name, specifications andsize, as well as search for exhibi-tors, manufacturers and product

Course of action

Family FunHow do you keep spouses and kids happy at the

boat show? You go where you know they’ll seethings that they like. If you’re serious about buying aboat, but they’re not interested in the process, leavethe negotiations for another day.

Instead, take everyone on the free riverboatride from the Las Olas Riverfront to Bahia Mar. Afteryou arrive, let the family gawk at the spectacularsuperyachts lined up along the face dock. Then youcan move on to whatever type boats interest thefamily — sportfishermen, high-performance, inflat-ables, trawlers or cruisers.

Plan to have lunch at Bahia Mar’s food court,where everyone can get something to suit his or hertastes. Then head toward the boat show’s mainentrance. Along the way, you’ll be able to peruseand purchase clothing, boat shoes, fishing tackle,sunglasses, jewelry, coolers and art .

If the kids are into fishing, and they’re ages 5-16,catch a shuttle bus to the Broward County Conven-tion Center so they can attend one of the freeKids Fishing Clinics, which are at noon and 2 p.m.Saturday and Sunday. They’ll get fun, low-key in-struction in casting, knot-tying and conservation.

Afterwards, they can stroll through the BlueWild Dive and Travel Show in the lobby of theconvention center, where exhibitors offer everythingfrom dive instruction and scuba gear to speargunsand dive destinations. Marine artists and photogra-phers display their work.

Serious boatersThe best thing about the boat show for someone

serious about buying a boat is the opportunity tocomparison shop. Imagine being able to go carshopping and being able to check out three differ-ent makes of automobile in one dealer’s showroom.That’s the beauty of the boat show.

If you’re in the market for a center console fishingboat, you can compare the features and prices ofthree or four or more similar models. Get in theboats and study their layouts, sit at the helms,open the hatches and lean against the gunwales.

Likewise for a sportfisherman or trawler or su-peryacht: Climb aboard, walk around, sit down andfigure out what you like and don’t like. Sometimesyou can arrange for a test drive with a similar boatthat’s not in the show, but in most cases you’llschedule that sea trial after the show.

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, youcan negotiate prices. Before you get to that point,you can determine your financing options withany number of lenders at the show and find out howmuch insurance will cost. You can price a new boatlift if you live on the water or secure a slip in amarina.

You can also procure accessories for your newboat: Everything from an anchor and autopilot tofishing tackle and furniture to a stereo system andsafety gear.

A divided coupleYou love being on the water, but your partner

would rather be somewhere else. Should the two ofyou go to the boat show together? Of course.

Your partner might not care about boats, but it’sfun to take in the sights and people-watch. Anddon’t forget the benefits of sharing your observa-tions while walking hand-in-hand along the dockson a sunny autumn day.

There are plenty of things to see and buy at theshow besides boats. Start with some of the world’sbest marine wildlife artists and then you canshop for accessories. Guy Harvey’s booth is in theentrance tent at Bahia Mar. There, in addition to hisoriginals and prints, you can buy all types of prod-ucts featuring his art work. Next to Harvey is sculp-tor David Wirth’s booth. Wirth hand-carves marinelife such as fish and seahorses from wood. He alsofashions Hawaiian circle hooks from wood as well asother materials. Carey Chen’s booth is close by andstocked with his original paintings, prints and gi-clees.

Whether you spend time on a boat or not, boatshoes are always in fashion and there are plenty ofbooths where you can buy a pair. The Capt. Harry’sFishing Supply booth at Bahia Mar has a variety offootwear styles ranging from sneaker types to flipflops, as well as several different makes of shirts andhats along with fishing tackle. Quality sunglassesare another essential item and the show has plentyof those, too. Capt. Harry’s sells Costa sunglassesand Sunglass Haven in the entrance tent has manydifferent brands.

Fantasy buyersEver wonder what would you do if you won the

lottery? If you’ve dreamed about cruising aroundthe world, the boat show is the perfect place tosee just how far your imaginary winnings could takeyou.

Walk the docks on the Intracoastal Waterway atBahia Mar, the Swimming Hall of Fame and Las OlasMarina to see how big a boat you could buy if youhit a big jackpot. Megayachts — boats over 80 feet— and superyachts — boats over 100 feet — canrange in price from $5 million to $50 million.

In most cases, you’d probably be happy to ownthe yacht’s tender, which is often a rigid inflatableor flats skiff. Visit the TrawlerPort at Bahia Marfor a less expensive, seaworthy option for cruising.You can’t bring as many toys with you as you can onthe superyachts, but you’ll travel in comfort andoften in groups. An even more affordable option isto charter a boat for a week or two. You can pick upa boat locally and sail off with it or fly to a resortdestination and hop aboard a yacht that has acaptain and crew to attend to your every need.

To complete your fantasy, you’ll need to look thepart. At the very least, you should be able to pick upa captain’s hat if not a blue blazer, a puffy shirt anda pair of khakis.

Then the Fort Lauder-dale International BoatShow may just have whatyou’re looking for. Onething’s certain: There willbe a lot ofmarine eye candyondisplay.

But before you get car-ried away with visions ofsailing off in your dreamboat, you should do somehomework before headingto the show.

While boat shows aregood for comparison shop-ping given the number ofboats and motors in oneplace, advance researchwill help simplify the buy-ing experience, boating in-

dustry specialists say.“Boat showprices can be

really good, especially witholder inventory,” said Caro-line Ajootian, assistant vicepresident, consumer affairsfor BoatUS, a national asso-ciation representing boatowners since1966.

The good news is that ifyou’re in the market for aboat, financing is available.Some lending specialistssay a 680 credit score orhigher is realistic toobtainaboat loan today.

“Money is readily avail-able if people qualify,” saidBob Allen, office managerat Trident Funding Corp. inFort Lauderdale. “Morelending programs are avail-able now than there everwere.”

Interest rates are alsodown a bit over last year,

“which is a good thing,” Al-len added.

This year, the hottest-selling boat category inSouth Florida is the openfisherman, with three orfour outboards, which isused for fishing and diving,said Scott Stamper, seniorvice president of Atlass In-surance Group in Fort Lau-derdale. “These boats arefast and fuel-efficient.”

Boat sales are rebound-

ing in the lagging economy,and that bodes well for themany boat sellers andmanufacturers exhibitingat the 53rd annual show.

For the12months endingin September, sales of newboats in South Florida rose5.5 percent to 3,854 unitscompared with 3,653 in theprior-year period, accord-ing to Info-Link Technolo-gies, aMiami-basedmarineindustry tracker.

Check several dealer web-sites togetan ideaof the fairmarket value of the boats ofinterest. While show pricescan be attractive, it’s prob-ablyagood idea tobuy froma local dealer that provideswarranty service, boat in-dustry specialists say. It canbe costly to trailer a boatout-of-state for servicing.

Pre-qualify for loan:“The [boat] brokers like it.It means they’re seriousbuyers,” said Allen of Tri-dent, an exhibitor who al-readyhas several pre-quali-fied prospective buyerscoming to this year’s show.“More and more peoplewant it [pre-qualification]so they can get themoney ifthey find their dreamboat.”

Calculate full costs of

boat ownership: Otherthan the price tag, boatownership costs include in-surance,maintenance, stor-age or dockage fees andfuel. Hire a marine survey-or to evaluate the boat, es-pecially a pre-owned one,to determine if repairs arerequired.
