SUB-ZERO TREATMENT

Pieces requiring maximum dimensional stability shouldbesub-zero treated, asvolumechangesmayoccur in thecourseoftime.Thisapplies, forexample, tomeasuringtoolslike gauges and certain structural components.

Sub-zerotreatment

Immediatelyafterquenching thepieceshouldbesub-zerotreatedtobetween–95to–110°F(–70and–80°C),soakingtime3–4hours,followedbytempering.Sub-zerotreatmentwill give a hardness increase of 1–3HRC.Avoid intricateshapesas therewillberiskofcracking.Alternatively,sub-zero treatment can be done between first and secondtempers.Thiswillhavelesseffect, butsaferwithrespecttorisk cracking.
