Activities Update…

Lydia Shinogle and Macie Renaud will be representing

Bondurant-Farrar for the annual Shrine Bowl Football game as

part of the South Cheer Squad, held in Cedar Falls at the UNI

Dome. Lydia and Macie, along with 62 other cheerleaders,

went through a tryout process on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016. They

were selected after learning a cheer, dance and performing

jumps and tumbling. This is a wonderful opportunity to support

the Shriners Hospital and an experience that is life

changing. They will be on site for one week, the football players

are there two weeks. The activities will include visits with

patients from the Shrine Hospital, parades, a banquet and daily

practices and activities. They perform a half time routine and

cheer on the sidelines throughout the game.

Congratulations to senior, Isla Ekstam on being selected as

the 2016 Bondurant-Farrar High School Wendy's Heisman

Winner. Students are known by their teachers and friends for

their commitment to excellence.

The Bluejay Pride Marching Band completed a successful marching season by earning their 5th consecutive Division I rating from the Iowa High School Music Association. The band also performed their show for the home football games, the Marching Dutch Invitational (placing 6th in 3A), the Urbandale Marching Invitational (2nd in 3A), Valleyfest (4th in 3A) and the Mid-Iowa Band Championships (4th in 3A). Their baseball-themed show, “Bottom of the 9th,” routinely earned the group high praise from judges and resulted in the band receiving their highest score ever at IHSMA State Contest. A marching band show happens only with the efforts of a large group of people, including a great group of parent

volunteers. The 70 members of the band were led on the field by Drum Majors Sarah Davis and Nicholas Currant. Mindy VanGundy instructs the Color Guard and the drum line is instructed by Scott Szurek. They also had the wonderful opportunity to work with leaders in the marching band genre in Iowa including Paul Brizzi, retired Ankeny director; Dr. Steven Smyth, ISU Marching Band Director; and Christian Carichner, ISU Marching Band Assistant Director.

The high school business club, DECA, decided to showcase "Kiss the Pig"

on September 21st at a pep assembly! Their goal was to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The student body voted to have four staff members be in the running to "Kiss the Pig." Mrs. Cue, Mr. Vandehaar, Ms. Purgatorio, and Mr. Garnass were all up for the task of puckering up! Throughout the week, students donated money into a bucket for the person they wanted to see "Kiss the Pig." On Friday October 21st, all of the money was counted for each contestant, a total of $330 was collected and Mrs. Cue was the chosen one! She had to kiss the sweet little pig! Thank you to all of those that donated money to support the American Cancer Society!

October is College Application Month

We are excited to be participating in the 3-Step Process sponsored by Iowa College Aid. The 3-Step Process includes a college application day, FAFSA completion initiative, and college decision day. We have also included college knowledge lessons for all students and a senior

conference for all seniors.

Our college knowledge lessons presented the post-secondary options to students (apprenticeships, associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree, certificate or diploma programs, military and the world of work). Students were given information on admission requirements as well. The Regent Admission Index (RAI) score is used for admission to ISU, UNI, and Iowa. The RAI is comprised of the student’s ACT score, CUM

GPA, class rank, and the number of core courses a student has taken (English, math, science, social studies, and world languages). Admission to four-year private colleges is done on an individual basis. If parents or students have any questions regarding post-secondary planning, please

contact your child’s school counselor.

Our seniors participated in the college application day on Wednesday, October 12. Over 70% of our senior class has completed a college application so far. It was a great day for seniors to fill out applications

and get questions answered on the applications!

The FAFSA is now open! It is important to know the financial aid priority deadline for the college(s) your child is applying too. Your students must have applied and be accepted to receive a financial aid

package. Our FAFSA night was held October 6. If you were unable to

attend or have any questions about the FAFSA, please let us know!

Bondurant-Farrar High School cheerleaders, seniors Isla Ekstam, Kelsey Tingwald, and Lydia Shinogle, were selected to

participate on the Iowa Cheerleading Coaches Association 2016 Honor Squad.

Up to three students per high school are selected to participate in the annual Honor Squad with over 250 cheerleaders

representing the State of Iowa. The Honor Squad practices twice before their performances at the State High School Football

playoffs held in Cedar Falls at the UNI Dome, Friday, Nov. 18, 2016. They practice and learn the majority of the material the

Sunday prior to performance at Ames High School. Then they practice the Thursday afternoon and evening until performance

ready. They will perform at two half time playoff games and receive an Honor Squad tee, award certificate and medal for

participation.

The Bondurant-Farrar High School cheerleading program has selection criteria for honor squad participants. Cheerleaders

must be positive leaders, participate in volunteer service activities, have excellent academic standing and have been a Varsity

Football cheerleader throughout High School. Participants must be a junior or senior. These young ladies are very excited to

represent Bondurant-Farrar High School at this prestigious event!

Taking It In…

On October 27th, Kaylee Seitzer, Abigail Bruce, Elise Tharp, Lydia Johnson, Regan Osborn, Chloe Klein, and Ellie Riemersma

attended the Taking the Road Less Traveled Women in Science and Technology (WISE) conference at Iowa State University.

This all day event provided keynote speakers which included Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds, several women who have been

instrumental in orchestrating and conducting work in the oil industry including the recent pipeline traversing the state of Iowa,

leaders in the Department of Natural Resources and many more. There were multiple breakout sessions which allowed young

ladies from BF to explore specific STEM areas of interest in great detail with industry experts. It was a very rewarding and

successful day for all!

Appointments:

If your child has an appointment outside of school we ask that a parent call and let the office know. We will write the student a

pass to get out of class at the given time. This helps us limit the interruptions to the class, and they will come to the office, sign

themselves out, and wait for you in our atrium. If your child has not come down when you get here, please let us know and we

will call them down. When your child returns to school after an appointment please make sure they bring a note so we can

excuse the absence. Please reach out to the high school office if you have additional questions.

Vacations: Please attempt to notify the high school office at least a week in advance if you plan on being out of town. This provides

opportunity for students to meet with teachers and discuss plans to complete their work. In order to be excused, the office must

be notified by a parent/guardian.

Nurse: If your child texts or calls you during the day time to inform you they are sick and want to go home, please have them go and

see the nurse. We will not release a student without talking to and being seen by Ms. Higgins. We have reporting procedures

with the state and this helps us keep up to date.

Process to have your child leave the HS building…
