Leathers Descriptions

Al and Marla Mechling’s passion for researching their family history led to collecting and rebinding old county histories, which developed into a garage-based rebinding business in 1995. Their new-found company, Mechling Bookbindery, quickly outgrew its boundaries and was moved to a full-scale manufacturing and shipping facility. During the past two decades, the company has provided book printing, bookbinding and book restoration services; and has added the Bookbinders Workshop division, supplying bookbinders and craftsmen with tools and materials.

Our leathers are sold as full skins (except Cathedral Calf, which is also available in half skins.) The size, shape, color and texture will vary from skin to skin. We recommend that you order a larger piece than you think you’ll need because of the shape variance, and, if second-grade quality, possible blemishes or small holes.

Unlike leathers made for other industries, such as furniture or clothing, bookbinding leathers require special qualities that will allow the leathers to be pared, hand-tooled, foil-stamped and formed, yet possess a beautiful finish that will last many years. These leathers are generally from animals that are raised in areas without barbed-wire fencing, which can often leave scars and blemishes on the leather. Vegetable tanning, using sumac and other natural substances, is also utilized in the final process.

Our leathers are made from the skins of goats, calves, cows, and sheep. All of our leathers are vegetable-tanned.

Most sheep have wool, but these sheep actually have hair instead and that makes a different texture to the skins. Available in ochre color only. Limited supply.

Unlike most goatskins, these skins have very little texture and are well suited for period style bindings where a traditional look and feel are required. Easily pared, tooled and foil-stamped. Available only in ochre color.

payhembury hand-marbled papers

These papers are marbled by hand, following the traditional method of floating water-based paints on a size (liquid) made from Carragheen Moss. By this method, a fine line and clarity can be achieved, which is not possible using other methods. Sheets are approximately 20" x 28.5" except E28, which is 19" x 24". All are grain long. Some of the papers are produced on cream paper; and some are exclusively made for Bookbinders Workshop on our Fourdriner 100% rag paper, which is much lighter in color and weight. Because each paper is handmade and patterns can be produced at different times, there will be differences in design and color from sheet to sheet. If you need matching sheets, please contact us to be sure we pick appropriate ones for your project. Made in England.

The Smyth three-page endsheet is reinforced with our 11/4” Cambric tape. The endpaper is sewn to the text block as the first and last signature, eliminating the process of tipping on a folded sheet.

A great ecological choice, this paper is created at the mill on a Fourdriner machine from clothing industry off-cuts, white tee-shirts, blue denim and flax straw from farmers. Colors are that of the rags—not bleached or cooked. The rag pallets consist of mixed batches, with colors varying from batch to batch. When looking at some of these papers, a depth of color can be seen in the mixed strands of cotton fiber. Sheets are 21½” x 30” (54cm x 76cm); direction of the grain is the 30” (76cm) length.

Designed and manufac-tured in Germany, the PraGnant XS-E110 is a manual foil-blocking press for one-off titles and name stamping, and was spe-cifically designed for craft binders. The typeholders are self-centering, which qualifies the PraGnant XS-E110 to be used wher-ever frequently changing titles or names have to be stamped. The book case (or oth-er stamping product) is placed upright into the machine so that the blocking process may be observed all the time and, if necessary, be corrected or repeated. Expensive faulty blockings are therefore eliminated. The unit is portable and can be easily moved about the shop for convenience. Guide markers on each side are in millimeters and inches.

The PraGnant XS-E110 may be used in any bindery, in arts and crafts as well as copy shops and bookstores to customize Bibles and promotional items. This turning-in machine presses the book case at the same time that it turns in the edges. No need for a separate roller unit. At the first step, two sides of the book case are turned in. Then the operator tucks the corners and rotates the case 90 degrees to turn the other two sides. Operator can select front return or rear return for greater output. An electronic detector senses the material as it enters the machine, which gives a burst of air to slightly lift the material edge to prevent the glued material from contacting the surface, thus keeping the machine free of adhesives. The PraGlu is a manual fanbinding device for binding books of different sizes. The large working width of 650 mm (25.6”) even makes the binding of newspapers possible. The block of single sheets is inserted into the PraGlu with its spine facing downwards to make sure all the pages are jogged flush in the binding area. The pages are then fanned side to side and glue applied to each. Folded end sheets can be added at the same time as the fanbinding. Then the operator applies spine lining. The glue is applied at a comfortable working height of 92cm (36”) to ensure a non-tiring working process for the operator. Fanbinding works great for non-coated paper without notching. Coated papers must be notched prior to binding to achieve a solid binding. The PraGlu may be used as a book clamp for other jobs to be done on the book block, such as removing staples or scraping off old glue. Includes a glue clamp and drying clamp.
