By Kelly Running The iconic Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musi-

cal Ride will be returning this year to Wawota, 25-years after the community hosted its fi rst musical ride.

Gates to the event will open at 4 p.m. with entertain-ment including food booths, vendors from the Red Barn, music, bouncy castles, face painting and more between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at which time the musical ride will begin.

Following the ride there will be musical entertain-ment by Tom Richards, beer gardens open, and supper.

The evening will also feature a meet and greet – with pictures – with the horses and riders at the end of the show.

Meredith Swanson with Wawota’s Business En-

hancement Group, which is hosting the event, told The Observer, “We had the Musical Ride in Wawota back in 1990. I was involved in that one, so I sent in another application, hoping, but never really thinking we’d get them to come again. We lucked out, because they only go to certain provinces each year and in 2015, it’s only in Saskatchewan and the Maritimes.”

“We provided them with a really good experience the last time and we’d like to repeat that. We tried to look after them well. We barbequed a whole pig and they said then that they had never been looked after that well, ever.”

The ride will be held at the natural amphitheatre just on the northern outskirts of town.

Swanson told The Observer, “It’s a beautiful site and

an excellent setting for the Musical Ride, because you can sit up and look down on the riders’ formations, or you can sit down low and see things at horse-level. The highlight from my point of view is the setting. It’s not a rodeo ground, which is the type of place it’s usually held.”

Proceeds from the event will be put towards Wa-wota’s Heritage Park.

The fi rst offi cial RCMP Musical Ride was held in 1887 in Regina. Since then it has become a quintes-sentially Canadian event which is renowned around the world. Today the sight of the RCMP members in their Red Serge atop their horses heralds back to the begin-ning days as the North-West Mounted Police. A history and legacy the Musical Ride has become a must-see event in Canada.

Keeping with this tradition the Musical Ride has a full troop, which includes 32 riders and horses, as well as a member in charge.

As a paramilitary group the RCMP execute intricate fi gures and complete cavalry drills precisely while fol-lowing strict choreography to music.

Described on the RCMP’s website, the ride demands the “utmost control, timing and coordination, these movements are formed by individual horses and riders, in two’s, four’s, and eight’s at a trot and at the canter. Months of training, practice and many kilometres/miles around the riding school make horse and rider one.”

Tickets are available in advance as well as at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased by Wednesday, July 15, by calling 306-739-2898, or by stopping by the Kenosee Inn, Kenosee Mini-Mart, King’s Department Store in Carlyle, in Wawota at Grammie’s Gift Empo-rium and 2nd Street Eats as well as the Wawota Town Offi ce, or The World-Spectator in Moosomin.

Advanced tickets are $40 for a family pass which includes two adults and two children under 17-years. Adults are $12, youth aged 6-years-old to 17-years are $8 each, and children 5-years and under are free.

Tickets will also be available at the gate with adult tickets costing $15, youth ages 6—17 will be $10, and children 5-years and under are free.

RCMP Musical Ride coming to Wawota July 28

A spectacular sight, the RCMP Musical Ride, will be in Wawota on Tuesday, July 28, performing at 7 p.m. Wawota has activities and entertainment planned for all ages between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. along with a food court and beer gardens. Purchase an advance ticket by July 15 or buy them at the gate the day of.

By Vern May“We can bring a small town to its knees on any given

night of the week.” Country music fans will recognize this snappy lyric from a popular chart topper by Mani-toba’s own Doc Walker.

There’s a growing number of communities in western Manitoba eyeing live acts to create that level of local pandemonium.

It’s not an isolated interest. Last year Bret Michaels headlined Minnedosa’s Rockin’ the Fields festival, Deloraine presented Delodaze with Harlequin atop the marquee, Virden’s new arena hosted Kenny Shields and Streetheart, while Souris created waves with three shows – Doc Walker, Aaron Pritchett and Nazareth. The response was encouraging and the forecast looks prom-ising for more shows.

“What it comes down to is that most communities have arenas that sit empty for four months a year,” said one concert organizer. “These facilities were built as a venue to create community spirit – and that means look-ing beyond just the realm of sport on skates.”

Local concert promoters point to the rural advantage of a network of neighbouring towns that are already ac-customed to visiting each other for a variety of activities and services. With the right act and an attractive ticket price, they’re fi nding that the crowds will come out to support – thrilled by the interaction with the artists in a more intimate setting.

But it’s not all fun and games. Successful shows can have a tremendous economic impact on communities through the increased traffi c in town as well as the busi-ness of presenting the show itself – supplies and labour that can be sourced locally.

In Minnedosa, the popularity of their Rockin’ the Fields festival has attracted not only loyal repeat ticket-buyers but has also resulted in visitors investing locally in summer cabins. In one case, a concert goer was so enthralled with the community upon their fi rst visit that they relocated to the town and bought a business.

“We used to think we needed to focus on Winnipeg to try to get people out of the city,” says Darcy Bialas, chairman of the Rockin’ the Fields team. “Sure, some come out but where we see the strongest draw is from

the south and west. We get a lot of folks from surround-ing rural communities as well as from Saskatchewan and even into Alberta.”

No matter where they’re coming from, the message is clear, folks want to see live acts in their communities. This year, Melita made its fi rst foray into concerts with the Ryan Keown Band, Souris kicked off their fair and rodeo weekend with Beverley Mahood and Rockin’ the Fields celebrates their twelfth year with a line up that includes The Tea Party, Daughtry, Night Ranger, Moist and Econoline Crush for their three day festival over the August long weekend.

The more intimate setting is great for the artists too, and they have sometimes been pleasantly surprised to fi nd what awaits them on communities that they may re-quire a little assistance from their GPS to fi nd. Bound-ing from the stage after his sold out show in Souris last summer, Aaron Pritchett looked to his road manager Kim Stonebridge and exclaimed: “Wow! Who expected that?” in response to the enthusiastic frenzy that greeted his show. The signed show poster still hangs in the Souris Civic Centre which includes a message from the B.C. hitmaker “You really impressed me!”

Doc Walker’s experience was similar. “We’ve never had a host follow our hospitality rider so exactly as they did here,” Dave Wasyliw declared after their success-ful outing in the Souris & Glenwood Memorial Complex.

Could western Mani-toba cultivate a reputa-tion as a hotspot for live entertainment and concerts? We have a number of great venues, there appears to be great support regionally, and we’re building the experi-ence locally to produce top notch shows.

The fans are screaming for an encore, let’s get the bands back on stage.

Doc Walker performs live in Souris last year. Westman communities have created a buzz as of late with their live performers.

Lynne Bell Ten-year-old Sasha

West of Wawota has made just over $1,000 in contri-butions that will benefi t both Cystic Fibrosis Cana-da and the Regina Humane Society, and she did it by making one dog bed and

tug toy at a time. Sasha, who was di-

agnosed with CF at 15 months, participated in the Great Strides Walk for CF in Regina for the fi rst time in May. According to Cystic Fibrosis Canada (http://cysticfibrosis.ca):

“It is estimated that one in every 3,600 children born in Canada has cystic fi bro-sis.”

The effects of CF vary from person to person and there is currently no cure. However, both research and advances in treating CF are ongoing and prom-ising, which is where Sa-sha chooses to place much of her focus and her volun-tary efforts.

As part of her pledging process for the CF Walk in Regina, Sasha decided to make and sell a few dog beds and puppy pull toys, using fl eece fabric and pillows of all sizes. What started out as a sim-ple request to family and friends, along with a Face-book page (‘Pawsitive Pet Shop’), became a deluge of orders that soon turned the West’s Wawota home into something resembling a mini-factory, according to Sasha’s mom, Kyla.

“We have sold about 120 (dog beds),” adds Kyla. “We added the tug toys as a way to use the leftover material. It started with a few dog beds and between family, friends and the Facebook page we set up, it grew.”

“I’ve liked dogs since I was really little, so I thought it would be a good thing to do,” adds Sa-sha. “I’d like to be a dog groomer or a vet, some-thing with animals.”

“We’ve had people from Wawota buy them,” says Kyla. “But we’ve also had people from through out the area order them, too. People from Mary-fi eld, Kenosee (Lake), Car-

lyle...and even from Regi-na, Saskatoon and Prince Albert.”

“It got to the point that both Rob (West, Sasha’s dad) and I were making stops wherever we could to buy more pillows and material. We stepped in to help and at one point, we had two extra tables set up in the house, tubs of fabric and about 30 pillows ready to go.”

During the three months of pillow produc-tion-Sasha started her proj-ect in February-the West family still maintained their busy schedule.

Although her eldest sister, Vanessa is a uni-versity student and lives away from home, Sasha, her brother Theoren (12), and her sister Logan (5) all attend school in Wawota. Sasha has played hockey since she was six-years-old and currently plays goal for the Wawota Fly-ers’ Atom team.

“We were doing pretty good (this season),” she says of the team. “But one of our best players got a concussion.”

Also a gymnast, she competes as a rhythmic gymnast as part of the Rhythm Cats, in addition to participating in artistic, non-competitive gymnas-tics.

“I’ve been in gym-nastics since I was four,” says Sasha. “Last year I just missed competing with the Rhythm Cats at the Saskatchewan Games, because of my age. But I’d like to compete in the Games someday.”

Sasha says joining

over 300 fellow partici-pants in the CF Walk in Regina was a family affair, and she intends to make it an annual tradition.

“Me, my brother, my younger sister, my mom and dad, my grandpar-ents, my three cousins, my aunitie and lots of my family went in for the walk together. There were a lot of people and it was pretty exciting.”

Sasha’s contribution to CF was over $1,000 and as an avowed animal lover, she also contributed over $200 to the Regina Hu-mane Society.

“I really like the dogs there,” she says. “My dad’s cousin works there and we’ve been there a couple of times. I’m giving them some dog beds, too.”

Although Sasha is looking forward to sum-mers-and swimming- at the family cabin in Moose

Mountain Provincial Park, she says that pillow pro-duction won’t be entirely suspended.

“I want to do the (CF) walk again,” she says. “A lot of people have said these beds are good for their cats. And they are nice, comfy pillows for people, too. We can make them in almost any pattern you’d like.”

Grandmother Wendy Greenbank of Kenosee Lake says, “I’m always amazed by Sasha. There is no obstacle that has stopped her from reaching her goals. She gives every-thing 110 percent effort. We’re all so proud of her and we’ll be all be with her next year.”

Bad news for Peewee ball team as they face disqualifi cationby Darci Semeschuk

It was a dream come true, the Souris Peewee base-ball team was riding a high all the way to the Provincial playoffs. That was until July 4 when they were informed by Baseball Manitoba that they were disquali-fi ed from the tournament. According to a person close to the situation, the team is being disqualifi ed for having

uncertifi ed coaches in the dugout.“We are being disqualifi ed because we don’t have cer-tifi ed coaches,” explained a team representative who wished not to be named. “The answer I got is that Baseball Manitoba approves rosters after the league decides the representative. There are a few fl aws in the system.” The representative explained that since Souris has been disqualifi ed, the second place team now gets to go to “AA” Provincials despite losing out to Souris. The

two teams that lost in the semi- fi nals played off to see who goes for the Provincial “A” representative. Others close to the team also heard that there are other teams affected but they’re not sure if it goes as far as disquali-fi cations. However, no confi rmation has been made through Baseball Manitoba. Brian Sobry is the Souris Minor Ball representa-tive and he confi rmed that indeed the reason the team was disqualifi ed was that there were no certifi ed per-sonnel on the bench. “This is an unfortunate oversight because we were unaware that Baseball Manitoba required coaching certifi cation for teams that make it to

a Provincial playoffs,” stated Sobry in a tele-phone interview July 8. “We knew that having a certifi ed coach on the bench was a recommen-dation but not a rule. In the past, teams have been able to add a coach to the roster if they made Provincials. I guess not anymore.” In fact the Oil Dome league, of which Souris is a member accepts, verifi es, and submits all the rosters to Baseball Manitoba and they accept them as submitted. How the roster with the uncerti-fi ed coaches made it past the Oil Dome representa-tives is anyone’s guess. An email to that rep went unanswered by press time.

Baseball Manitoba’s vice-president of Competition, Terry

Couvier, who actually grew up in Souris, says the situation is very sad

for the players involved. However, leagues were informed after the new rule passed at the semi-annual general meeting in March. From there the directive is sent out to the leagues and fi lters down to the communities from those league representa

The Souris Peewee team are the 2015 Oil Dome League Champions and they should be representing their community at the Provincial playoffs. Unfortunately, miscommunication, a clerical error, and the fact that there are no certifi ed coaches on the roster has disqualifi ed them from pursuing a league title. Pictured above is the team in happier times when they won their league championship and still believed they would play at Provincials. Back row (L-R): Trevor Kozak, Tyson Kozak, Cory King, Justin Armstrong, Avery Kirkup, Zach Edmunds (AP), David Kirkup. tives, in this case Oil Dome to Souris. “I am not going to lay blame on anyone here,” stated Couvier. “Everyone one involved had an opportunity to learn the new rule in time for their coaches to be registered. The coaches packages state very clearly what is required from each team. This is the fi rst year that this rule had been in effect and Souris isn’t the only community affected,” Couvier said. “There are two other teams that were disqualifi ed.” In addition to the two teams that were disquali-fi ed, Couvier says that one other team requested that a coach be added to the roster of another team by offi cial letter and before the June 15 deadline and that team is able to play in their provincial tourna-ment. “If Souris had done that by the deadline then they would have been

allowed to add a certifi ed coach as well,” explained Couvier. “As it is, it’s the rule and it must be adhered to. All the tools are there for commentates to know what is required for people on their rosters. They just had to read the manual.” The Peewee ball team has just nine players on its roster. This means that every player plays every game and they worked hard to make it to the league championships. Stats for the league was 12 games total, 10 wins, 2 losses. This qualifi ed them for the league tournament in fi rst place. They played a total of three games and won all three. Defeating Elkhorn to qualify for a Provincial Berth was icing on the cake for the hard working players. It was all for naught due to a long line of clerical errors and mistakes not of their mak-ing. “I feel as bad as any-body does about this,” Couvier said from his offi ce in Winnipeg. “It’s my home town. This is just a terrible, terrible situation for these kids who now have to suffer because of poor communi-cation.”For Souris Minor Ball and nine Peewee players, this is a hard lesson learned. In 2016, Sobry says that all coaches will be certifi ed. “It’s hard for the play-ers who are disqualifi ed because of this but there’s nothing we can do about it,” he remarked. “We’ll just do better next year.”

weekend of Saturday, July 18-19, in Kennedy, where the 83rd annual event will be held.

Two days of extreme excitement and action will be found with a parade beginning on the Saturday at 11 a.m.

The event dates back to 1934 with Rev. Bill Gourlay organizing a family outing on “Shackleton Flats.” Ever since the 1st annual rodeo was held the community has embraced the event.

A dual sanctioned event the rodeo which is part of the Professional Canadian Rodeo Association (PCRA) and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) will be hosted for points in both.

The rodeo will feature North American competitors in steer wrestling, team roping, bull riding, tie down rop-ing, novice bareback, novice saddle bronc, novice steer wrestling, bareback, steer riding, ladies barrel racing,

and saddle bronc throughout the two-days.The annual event will see action begin on Saturday at

5 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. While the annual demolition derby and children’s activities will be enjoyed through-out both days as well, while a cowboy church service is hosted Sunday morning.

There will also be a dance held on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the rodeo grounds.

Last year the event saw perfect weather and an abun-dance of attendees all made possible by the dedicated local rodeo committee and numerous volunteers.
