This year Saint John celebrates its 225thanniversary as Canada's first incorporatedcity! Our City is steeped in history but itis not the past that I would like to focuson, it is the present and the future. Severalyears ago, our 5 regional mayors workedtogether on creating a vision and blueprintfor our regions growth, the True GrowthStrategy. This strategy highlights 4 primarysectors for sustainable growth in our

region: Information and CommunicationsTechnology (ICT); Energy andManufacturing; Tourism and Retail; andHealth Sciences. In the year ahead, issuesof Currents will touch on each of thegrowth sectors and include articles frommembers who work in these sectors.

This issue of Currents is focused onTechnology Trends and how they impactbusiness. Technology, from social mediato the Fibre to the Home & Business, isplaying an ever increasing key role in our

day-to-day business lives. I for one havebecome reliant upon e-mails and myiPhone! To think we were conductingbusiness without Blackberries until thefirst years of the 21st century seems sodistant, yet it is only ten years ago! Whatlies in store for the next ten years?

Saint John itself has also transformedand so has our province. One need look no further than our Waterfront to see thechanges that have taken place. In the past

ten years we have seen the revitalizationof our waterfront with the developmentof Harbour Passage, the Marco Polo cruiseterminal, Split Rock lookout to name afew. Once again I wonder what lies instore for the next ten years? We have awaterfront development master plan andwe have some amazing conceptual designsfor the continued development andinvestment to guide us and help us makeour waterfront the best it can be.

To help guide and strengthen our growthas a City over the next 25 years, SaintJohn is creating a new Municipal Plan.To ensure everyone, citizens and businessalike, help create the best guidelines forour Citys growth, the City has establisheda Citizens Advisory Council and hasopened a project storefront in Brunswick Square to engage stakeholders and obtaintheir feedback on the future physicaldevelopment of Saint John. We are lookingforward to participating throughout theplanning stages and are eager for ourmembers feedback on this issue. Imaginewhat Saint John could look like in thenext ten years! Opportunities for input

will be presented throughout the process;we will keep you, our members updatedwhen they occur.

We at the Board of Trade take our roleas the Voice of Business and our mandateto contribute to a productive economicenvironment for business in Saint Johnvery seriously. Our mandate and ourmembers feedback are our primaryguiding principles when we examine anissue and provide our feedback. If youhave any ideas or feedback please feel

Powering Up the Network: A Reporton Small Business Use of E-businessSolutions in CanadaBackground

On February 9, The Canadian Chamberof Commerce released Powering Upthe Network: A Report on SmallBusiness Use of E-Business Solutionsin Canada. The report benchmarksCanadas progress in information andcommunications technology (ICT) ande-commerce adoption among small

businesses and provides concreterecommendations for government andbusinesses to work hand-in-hand to getCanada back on track.

Over 900 businesses, 90% of whichwere small businesses, from acrossCanada responded to the CanadianChambers survey to determine howbusinesses use the internet, whatbusiness-to-business transactions aretaking place and how small businessesprotect their networks. The surveyrevealed that, while 96% of respondentsuse the internet for business purposes, only 58% of respondents conducte-commerce via their websites. Oncyber security matters, while 93% of respondents use anti-malware software,19% of respondents do not have a secureserver and 11% of respondents do notback up their critical data on a regularbasis.

While the availability of broadbandinternet across the country remainsrelatively high, Canada has slippedinternationally in ensuring its digitalinfrastructure is world class and, as aresult, it has become more difficult toattract and keep jobs in the knowledge-based economy.

    PositionThe Canadian Chamber of Commerce

recommends that the federal governmentcontinue to work with the private sector

to accelerate e-business adoption amongsmall- and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) and that the federal governmentcreates a favourable investment climatethat encourages foreign and domesticinvestment in Canadian e-businessopportunities.The federal government should:1. Establish a national ICT adoption

strategy and a national advisory councilon ICT and the e-economy to betteradvance the adoption of ICT across all

industry sectors and particularly SMEs.2. Allocate resources for investments in

ICT and make ICT adoption and use agovernment-wide priority.

    3. Continue to rely on the private sectorinvestment and competitive marketforces to drive broadband rollout acrossthe country.

    4. Work directly with the businesscommunity to better educate SMEsabout existing available programs andservices that could be accelerating ICTadoption and use among businesses.

What this Means for CanadianBusinessesWithout proper investment and

dedication to information andcommunications technology, innovationand the protection intellectual propertyrights, Canadas productivity will belimited and other nations will continue tosurpass us as a destination for bothdomestic and international businessinvestment. Canada must take back itsproper place as a world leader in

innovation and invest in our futureeconomic growth immediately.

Given the current state of the economyit is vital that the government allocateresources for investments in ICT to jumpstart Canadas economic recovery. Byestablishing a solid strategy, thegovernment can provide businesses andCanadians in general with the tools theyneed to continue to drive growth, innovation and jobs in the digital economy

    Information andCommunications Technology

The agreement announced on February5 between Canada and the United Stateson Buy American provisions representsan important step forward, puttingCanadian companies in a better position

to benefit from remaining U.S.infrastructure stimulus fundingand establishes a mechanism fornegotiating further access to U.S. markets. This means we are now in a strongerposition compared with our maincompetitors.

The Canadian Chamber has been doinga great deal of work around BuyAmerican, and while we will continue topush for greater engagement and to

counter protectionism with our largesttrading partner, we commend both theCanadian and U.S. governments on thisproductive agreement.

    Another important outcome of this

process was the speedy andcomprehensive work done by the federaland provincial/territorial governments toget this offer to the U.S. This sets animportant precedent for greater co-operation during current and future freetrade negotiations. This is a major stepforward domestically and will bode wellgoing forward.

Its time to knock down cubicle walls. Its time to let ideas breathe and grow inopen air and sunlight. Its time for brightminds to collide, resulting in an explosionof new ideas. Its time to set the stage forcreative thinking and to support and fosterinnovation. Thats the NEXT BIG THINGfor technology.

Allowing people to exercise thepossibility of their ideas means creatingan environment where they can really pullaway from the run-of-the-mill activities

of their routine and cultivate the notionof thinking about new things, says DavidBaxter, T4Gs Vice President of Innovation.

Why is it important to encourageemployees to participate in aerobics forthe mind? The bottom line is at stake.Corporations need to be forward-thinkingand move beyond whats working todayto ensure theyre a part of authoringtomorrow. The return on investment forletting employees explore big ideas iscreating the next wave of competitiveadvantage, explains Baxter.

Organizations that have growth as partof their business plan need to be thinkingbeyond what they are today and thinkingabout what is our future? What will makeus outstanding tomorrow.

One example of a real, executable BigIdea is Interaction Designer and UsabilityStrategist Russell Smiths corporategreenhouses plan. He believes one partof solving the innovation puzzle is toeliminate the Dilbert landscape.

When youre working on projects withpeople living in this cubicle world we livein, it doesnt encourage people to get thebest out of their ideas, he explains. Myidea was to create open spaces, givingpeople the ability to collaborate. Out of that well spark innovation.

Colleague Shawn Peterson, a SeniorDeveloper, has his own BIG idea. Hes

envisioning the world beyond the laptop.Eventually its going to come down tomore people using mobile devices asopposed to computers the growth isunbelievable, says Peterson.

He wants to see companies developingmobile websites for clients in conjunctionwith the construction of their maincorporate websites and targeting the typesof phones their customers are using. Whatgot him thinking? Simply being given theopportunity to set his mind free.

Peterson and Smith are about to unleashtheir concepts in T4Gs Geekfest IdeasCompetition as part of the companysLeading Thinkers Series on March 10.Ten other employees will also be anglingto win backing from the company to

    Unleashing theInner Geek

support their ideas, which range frommobile applications for grocery retailersto energy management for hospitals.

Its a great opportunity to throw outinnovative ideas that have value andimpact in the market and to compete forinvestment to run with them, saysPeterson.

Geekfest is all about fostering brilliantplans which is the Next Big Thing onthe technology front.

I see the employees being the plants

that require cross pollination for growth, says Smith. If you give them the rightelements to growthey will.

Words to the WiseReaching the right people, at the right time, in the right way to

    ensure your message is delivered

Gone are the days of the handwrittenletter - or are they? Have you everwondered which will be more effective -a phone call, email, letter or tweet?

Communicating in todays wired worldpresents many challenges for ensuringyour messages reach the people you wantthem to reach. The big question remains, how do you reach the right people, at theright time, in the right way?

Advances in technology havedramatically changed the way we interactwith one another. With the number of

communications tools at our disposal thesedays, its easy to assume that technologyhas made communications easier. Thepromise of more efficient, effectivecommunications is very attractive, and itcan be tempting to jump aboard everyemerging trend. However, the relationship

between technology and communicationsis complex, and the latest thing does notnecessarily equate being more effective. In fact, productivity may be drasticallyreduced by multitasking across too manycommunication mediums. In order toensure your messages are being heard bythe right people, its always important toconsider how these people receiveinformation.

Peoples communication preferencesare as varied as the technological toolsavailable to them. Before using technology

to communicate, its important to considerwho youre trying to reach, what youretrying to tell them, and what is the mostappropriate tool for getting your messageacross. While your kids might only bereachable via text, some customers maybe more likely to respond to your regular

email updates, while others would rathercheck your blog or website on their owntime.

When approaching communications, whether its with your kids, colleagues orcustomers, its important to rememberthat, despite the technology at ourfingertips, the message is still the mostimportant place to focus your attention.Understanding who your audience is, theways they prefer to receive information, and making sure your information isavailable in a variety of formats (email,

website, brochure, etc.) is as important asthe message itself. Taking these stepsbefore sharing information will help youcut through the electronic clutter and makesure your message is heard.

I know, not another list of socialmedia/web tools for your business. Well, sorry, it is another one, but this is "mylist". :-) My simple recipe will make yourlife easier and your business will thriveon the web. So here we go:

    1. WebsiteYes, you still need a website, but yourwebsite needs to be flexible. It willmost likely consist of static content, butit needs to move with you and it needs

to work nicely with the next three toolsI am going to mention. So when youselect a web provider, make sure theycan integrate some social media toolswith your branded website, so theconversation online is seamless to thecustomer.

    2. BlogYou don't have one? Well get on it!

Blogging doesn't have to be that timeconsuming. Pick a medium: video, audio or written and start your ownblog. Figure out what you want to dowith your blog and your blog willbecome your conversation piece onlinewith your customers. I am going torecommend Posterous as the platformyou use. They make things simple forposting and sharing with other websites.

As a business owner that is what youwant. Note: Depending on yourbusiness, number 1 and number 2 canbe one.

    3. TwitterYes you need to be on Twitter. Sign upfor a personal account, search for folksyou want to communicate with, addyour customers and promote yourcustomers on Twitter. Think of it likeyou would when going to a cocktailparty and meeting new people. Interactlike you would there. First listen andwhen asked to speak, talk like youwould at the party. When asked to speak

I talk about my family, EvolvingSolutions, and The Hockey Zen.4. Facebook Fan Page

It's the best way to get people on theweb to talk about your business. It trulyis Word of Mouth on steroids. You addsomething to your fan page and otherpeople comment on it and that thenshows up in their activity which is thenseen by their friends. Pretty powerfulstuff. My most recent post I sharedsome Facebook tips. Check it out. In

the meantime here are some folks who

are doing a good job at engaging theirFB fans- Shaq, NHLDigest and TheFeel Good Store.

Give these tools a try to help simplifyyour web conversations while getting moreexposure with half the effort. Reach moreclients, free up more time and stayorganized. Once you start using thesetools, youll never know how you gotalong without them!
