OFFERING OUR BROKENNESS TO GOD

Leader: Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin and our need for God. People: Most holy and most merciful God, in your presence we face the brokenness of our

nature and the ways we have sinned both in doing what is wrong and in failing to do what is right. You alone know how often we wandered from your way, wasted your gifts, and underestimated your love.

Have mercy on us, O God, for we have broken your requirements for justice and overlooked opportunities for compassion. Humble us with your truth and raise us by your grace that we may more nearly be the people of Christ and witnesses to your love.

(time for silent confession) Amen. Leader: Friends, believe the good news, People: in Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

RECEIVE GOD’S HEALING AND SHARE GOD’S PEACE

Leader: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. People: And also with you. Please symbolically share the peace of Christ with those around you.

RESPONSE “Wash, O God, Your Sons and Daughters”

Text: Ruth C. Duck © 1989 The United Methodist Publishing House (Admin. by Music Services, Inc.). Reprinted under CCLI License # 34075.

Wash, O God, your sons and daughters, newborn creatures of your womb. Number them among your people, raised like Christ from death and tomb.

Weave them garments bright and sparkling; compass them with love and light. Fill, anoint them; send your Spirit, holy dove and heart’s delight.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

SCRIPTURE Ephesians 5:8-14

SCRIPTURE John 9:1-41

SERMON “A Change of Heart” Rev. Charlotte O’Neil

ANTHEM “He Turned the Water Into Wine” Johnny Cash

He turned the water into wine. He turned the water into wine. In the little Cana town the word went all around that

He turned the water into wine.

Well, He walked upon the Sea of Galilee. He walked upon the Sea of Galilee. Shouted far and wide, He calmed the raging tide and

Walked upon the Sea of Galilee.

He turned the water into wine. He turned the water into wine. In the little Cana town the word went all around that

He turned the water into wine.

He healed the leper and the lame. He healed the leper and the lame. He said, “Go and tell no man,” but they shouted it through the land that

He healed the leper and the lame.

He fed the hungry multitude. He fed the hungry multitude. With a little bit of fish and bread they said ev’ry one was fed.

He fed the hungry multitude.

He turned the water into wine. He turned the water into wine. In the little Cana town the word went all around that

He turned the water into wine.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH from the Brief Statement of Faith, PC (U.S.A.)

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.

OFFERING and DOXOLOGY “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow” 606 Text: Thomas Ken. Public domain.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heav'nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

SHARING OUR HEARTS WITH GOD Following each petition, God’s people respond:

Leader: Loving God, People: Hear our prayer. THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

*CONGREGATIONAL HYMN “This Little Light of Mine” (VBS 2021!)

Text: Spiritual. Public domain.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine: Let it shine! Let it shine! Let it shine!

Everywhere I go…

Everywhere I go on this road, high and low, where I go, I go with You. So I won’t be afraid. This my hope, come what may. Where I go, I go with You; Where I go, I go with You.

There’s a spirit I cannot contain. There’s a spirit I cannot contain. The same power that raised Jesus up from the grave;

The same spirit I cannot contain.

Your breath upon these bones, Your fire in my soul; Your kingdom is my home and I don’t walk alone.

On-Going Contributions and Projects Plastic Bags for Plarn Mats Plarn is the name for plastic yarn made from plastic grocery bags. Carol Fry, our church secretary, has been making plarn mats for the homeless for many years. The mats are 3’ x 6’ and are taken to NNEMAP for distribution. The many advantages to the plarn mats are they are bug-proof, water-proof, and insulating. They are also a little bit “squishy” and provide a much nicer surface for a bed than cardboard or the ground. Each mat uses 500-700 bags, keeping a LOT of bags out of the landfill, and the little bits of the bags that are cut off can still be recycled! There is a trash can/recycle bin in the Lounge for plastic bags to be donated to this mission. Carol only uses the “crinkly” grocery bags. Target, Kroger, Meijer, Giant Eagle, Dollar General, Walmart—all of these are good for mats. “Stretchy” plastic bags that are similar to trash bags or extra thick plastic bags like Arbys or Wendys can all be taken to the recycling bins at Giant Eagle. At this time, please do not bring all the bags you may be storing at home, just what you have collected during the week. If there is enough interest and help, you may be able to donate your extra bags in the future. Linda Wilton is helping Carol by cutting up bags so Carol can spend her time crocheting. Carol and Linda are hoping that a few other people would like to help out by cutting up bags once or twice a month. Feel free to contact Carol in the church office for more information on the bags and construction of the mats. Please contact Linda Wilton (614-486-4233) if you would like to be a part of the “Cut-Up Crew” and take part in Cut-Up Days. We Collect Pop Tabs

The pull tabs collection was begun through the Presbyterian Women’s Group. Even though the PW was disbanded, Linda Mahoney continues to encourage collecting aluminum pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House at Children’s Hospital. To date we have contributed approximately 75 pounds. The profits they receive from recycling them are used to offset various expenditures of the house. We currently have a large collection house in the Lounge. A large house is also in the

Fellowship Hall. Hopefully this captures participation from the groups that utilize this area during the week. There are also small houses on each floor of Thurber Tower. We can provide you a small house for individual home use. It may seem small but it all adds up and is greatly appreciated.

Layette Project Helps New Parents in our Community Linda Wilton continues to coordinate the collecting of items for the Layette Project through Church Women United that provides basic baby needs to parents that don’t have the resources to provide for their little ones. You can help by donating supplies for needy families in our local community. Most needed items: • Baby clothing from newborn up to one year, new or gently used. • Small bottles of lotion, shampoo, powder. • Small containers of wipes.

Please, no large economy sizes of bottles or wipes. (All items are placed in a single paper bag for the new parents and large bottles take up space for other needed items.)

Church Women United in Columbus and Franklin County is a Christian interdenominational movement that was formed in 1915. It has continued to address the many needs of women and children and provided a voice for the voiceless. Please bring your items to church and drop them off in the wicker basket in the Narthex or contact Linda Wilton at 614-486-4233. Thank you for your generosity.
