On Friday night, 20th of March we had our ‘LONG TERMERS’ night… a celebration of the long term relationship between employees of Bowens and the Bowen family.

Not all could attend but we have 66 reaching the 10 year, 19 at 20 years, 23 at 25 years, 7 at 30 years, 3 at 35 years and 1 each reaching the 40 and 45 year milestones. And (of course), Jeff Harvey who has now been with Bowens for 54 years!

I welcomed everyone attending but included in my words a sincere apology for the delay of 4½ years since our last long termers function. We are now back on track and will hold our next get-together in 2017. It is an important night of recognition of a relationship between Employee and Employer – and something that is possibly quite unique.

I emphasised the fact that a long term relationship can only exist if the parties involved make a real effort to work together for a mutual benefit. It is also very much about the personalities being a reasonable ‘fit’ and the need for mutual respect. How we ‘treat’ each other is important.

Richard Bowen, the founder of our Company, was very much a ‘people’ person – he understood that you need good people to run a successful business, not just people who are good at their work, but people who are… Good People. Richard, from everything I have heard and read about him, was not afraid of hard work and lead very much by example.

Richard brought on board men and women who became long term employees from the start of the Company in 1894 and this continued right through to well after Richard’s death in 1924. My father did the same and it is so fortunate and wonderful for John, David and I that we can have a function like last Friday night and celebrate our 63 employees who have worked from ten years with Bowens up to a Jeff Harvey with his 54 years!

In the December 2010 Builders Bulletin John Bowen referred to our Long Term Employees (and I quote):

“The consequences for the business in retaining our team for the longer term are overwhelmingly positive. Long termers give Bowens’ customers surety, as relationships are known and can be relied upon. Good habits become routine and a wealth of knowledge is created. A more stable environment for co-workers, and the individual themselves, occurs when a team stays together for an extended period.

My (other) challenge is to create a culture that encourages our group to stay with Bowens. I need to be an outstanding listener and recognise that Bowens needs to keep up with this changing world, including altered norms. This is an exciting and incredibly important challenge.

I would like to think our plans for the next year and beyond will assist us to create an environment where individuals are recognised, where each person’s skills are promoted and new challenges are constantly on offer. Success in this pursuit is an imperative. I suppose judgement will only be made over time.”

Now, I’m biased I know, but I think Bowens has enjoyed a pretty dynamic period since John wrote that piece. The refurbishing of old branches and the creation of new (2), plus the fact that we now operate the largest pre-fab business in Australia is testimony to John’s words and, more importantly, his actions.

But he could not have done it without our loyal long term staff, plus many others who have stepped up to the plate during John’s leadership since taking over the managing directorship of Bowens. John is trying hard to provide leadership that makes Bowens an exciting place to work at. The re-builds and new branches, and an ever growing pre-fab business are about making Bowens relevant to todays, and the future market.

The workplace example of our Long Term staff to the ‘younger’ employees of Bowens is also important – if they see long term staff as enthusiastic and still keen to learn after so many years, they must be inspired and motivated to stay Long Term themselves.

There has been some pain along the way, but there is also no doubt Bowens in 2015 is a much stronger company than it was even 4-5 years ago.

My personal message is that we, as long term employees, have to reinvent ourselves every few years. Our history is wonderful, our many years of partnership is wonderful – but times are always ‘a changing’, and unless we continuously act with renewed enthusiasm and learn the new technologies and new trending of the market-place, we will eventually fail.

Finally, I must mention the wonderful camaraderie of last Friday night… everyone mixed well and many great ‘workplace’ stories were told. There was much made too of the generational connections with Bowens – the Harvey family with Jeff and his 54 years, his son Stephen 25 years and Marilyn Harvey (Jeff’s wife) having worked for Bowens back in the early 60’s!

Other generational connections include the families Hassan, Peet, Beimers, Brown, Blake, Murphy, Edwards and Phelps.

I am personally very proud of these wonderful family connections with my family and in particular the mutual respect that prevails.

Jack Bowen, Chairman of the Board of Directors

Apprentices Are Essential To Our IndustryTonight, as I write this, a young man named Elton Brinkmann will be called up to the podium at The Carmichael event centre in Warrnambool to be recognised as Master Builders’ Apprentice of the Year for Victoria’s South West section. I trust it will be a proud moment for him; I can certainly tell you it is a rewarding experience for those of us at Master Builders to recognise young people like Elton, who contribute so importantly to the building industry.

Elton is one of approximately 20 apprentices, out of 400 nominated, whose work we recognise this season in our annual Apprentice of the Year program. Over the past month, our Careers Manager, Jarrod Flanigan, has driven throughout Victoria to help coordinate this event in the regional towns where the winning apprentices pursue their trades, including not just Warrnambool, but Geelong, Traralgon, Shepparton, Benalla, Mildura, Ballarat, Bendigo and the numerous smaller communities nearby.

Attending one of these celebratory events demonstrates just how important it is to the honourees and their families. The evenings are exciting occasions, and apprentice winners and nominees alike arrive with their parents, siblings, spouses, employers and educators whose guidance and encouragement have been so central to their achievements. It gives us a great feeling to observe the outpouring of support these folks receive, as well as the considerable media attention they attract. It draws attention to the fact that builders have a substantial impact on the communities in which they live and work. To that end, we are pleased to send the winners home with over $30,000 worth of sponsor-provided prizes, including tool allowances, designed to help them with their future work.

Now that the regional winners have been announced, we look forward to seeing them come together once again to compete for the State Apprentice of the Year Awards on 8 May in Melbourne.

Victoria is fortunate to have so much fresh talent eager to make a lasting contribution to our industry. They are essential to its health and productivity. We need a skilled workforce in building and construction that will continue to build Victoria. Acknowledging the hard work and dedication of these selected apprentices encourages all apprentices throughout Victoria to continue their career path to achieve better and greater things for our industry.

PermaTimberTM

The continued use of natural timber is not always a sustainable building practice and now more than ever customers are requesting eco friendly materials to be used in their homes. Cladding produced from composite materials is fast becoming a popular choice with innovative builders and architects. Eco Cladding by PermaTimberTM is an exciting new product that Bowens is proud to offer exclusively to builders in Victoria.

In recent years, composite timbers have become a popular alternative to natural timber. Eco Cladding is an environmentally friendly solution produced with 87% recycled timbers and plastics. The balance is also made up of a resin that binds it together with a UV stabilizer. The UV stabilizer is designed for the harsh Australian conditions so that once the product is installed, whilst it may fade 8 – 10%, it will maintain its colour for the rest of its life.

It is also salt and termite resistant making it ideal for bayside and termite prone areas. The product is guaranteed to last and comes with either a 10 year residential warranty or a 7 year commercial warranty.

One of the main benefits of Eco Cladding is that it is maintenance free. Maryanne Moss, National Sales Manager for PermaTimberTM explains that this product “is ideal for builders because once the product has been installed there is no need to do any further works such as oiling, painting or sanding. There is absolutely no maintenance required for this product. Once it is installed, there is basically nothing left to do”. This feature makes it ideal for buildings with limited access such as multi story houses and also for buildings that are required to be maintenance free. All that the product needs is the occasional light pressure clean to remove any dust.

When new products become available that are unfamiliar to work with there is always a learning curve. Danny Cetelli, carpenter for Cavello Homes describes what it was like when he used Eco Cladding for the first time on a multi-storey townhouse development in the bayside suburb of Edithvale. “Once we had a play with the product for about half an hour, it was pretty quick to install and we found it easy to use”. As all builders know, saving time on site is saving money.

Whilst the installation process is similar time wise to weatherboards, it’s the stops on the end pieces that saves time. Danny explains that “with weatherboard stops, you have to be really accurate and you also have to cut your boards in exactly right, especially if they’ve not been painted. With Eco Cladding you already have colour so you just take your measurement and cut it all 5mm short and you have plenty of colour. It goes together really quick and easy and it’s a neat finish”. The product can be cut with regular drop saw or power saw or even a handsaw if you had too.

The cladding comes with pre-drilled holes, with 450 or 600 centres making it easy to install on the battens with pan head type crews. The standard profile is 150mm x 4800mm. Eco Cladding has a sleek and modern appearance and comes in a complete trim system explains Maryanne, including “a window trim, a start/stop trim and an internal/external corner trim.”

David Barrie, Director at PermaTimberTM says that the product is very versatile as “you can have it installed vertically or horizontally and it comes in 3 standard colours teak, charcoal and cedar.

Custom colours and profiles are available for larger quantity orders giving extra creativity to architects and builders. As Danny says, “you‘ve got this one product and you can do quite a few different things with it to achieve different looks”. There certainly are a number of opportunities to use Eco Cladding in innovative and creative ways and it can be used as either a feature panel or an entire building.

It is always exciting for builders and architects to be able to use new materials so their projects stand out.

illume features• Innovative “Shaftless” Design

• Operated without a light-shaft

• Installs practically anywhere

• Fits to metal deck and tile roofs

• No leaks, heat, noise or insects

illume A ShaftlessTM Skylight System that you can install anywhere.illume is the world’s first solar powered “Shaftless™” system that works on any level of a home without the need of a light shaft, flexible tube or a large roof cavity.

In the past renovators, builders and designers who have ever integrated sky-lighting into a highrise or multi-storey design have perhaps only used a skylight on the top floor. However, illume’s clever “Shaftless™” design allows every level of a multi-storey plan to include dynamic sky-lighting.

The illume ‘Advanced Skylight System’ adds the ambiance of sky-lighting to homes where under normal circumstances a traditional skylight can’t be fitted. This innovative solution opens up an entirely new range of possibilities to architects and specifiers who can now design beautiful, dynamically lit areas from the darker areas of designs that are often taken for granted.

In addition to the smaller area suitability, the illume range has models to complement larger areas in the home such as kitchens, bathrooms and living areas.

As with traditional skylights, elements such as the time of day and the presence of cloud cover affect the lighting levels that an illume skylight emits, by way of illume’s fully automated lighting control system.

Kimberley call this ‘Ambient light technology’ and it ensures that the illume skylight system creates a lighting balance between internal and external ambient lighting sources

Shaftless Skylights that install anywhere...illume ™ adds the ambience of sky lighting to buildings where under normal circumstances a traditional skylight could not be fitted. The clever system design allows installation on any level of a home without the need of a light shaft, flexible tube or a large roof cavity to be cut-out. If you are building, renovating or designing a living space, you can now easily include the luxury of sky-lighting in areas that you hadn’t thought you could.

How does it work?As with traditional skylights, the light emitted from an illume system is also affected by the presence of sunlight, cloud-cover or overcast conditions.

Which illume suits your home? There are four sizes in the standard illume range and additional sizes are available in the premium trade packs.

Choosing the right illume system for your space is an important step as different models are better suited to different locations in your home. When choosing the right system it’s a good idea to visualise the spaces in your home that aren’t getting enough light or are dimly lit and then choose a model that is going to offer the most suitable output to complement that area.

Some ideal common locations that the illume system is suited to include: Hallways, entrances, walk in robes, bathrooms, ensuites and the restroom. But the system will work just about anywhere. From kitchen pantries to your garden shed or garage. Even the basement... The smaller models are suited to smaller spaces, pantries and restrooms. Larger models complement and effectively brighten more spacious areas.

The difference is that the illume advanced skylight system isn’t restricted to locations

with direct roof access.

Why install an advanced skylight?

• Works without batteries

• No mains power required

• Easy to install

• No running costs

• No light shaft required

• No UV emissions

• Doesn’t attract insects

• Auto operation

• Works in multi-level dwellings

• No heat transfer

• No carbon footprint

• No noise transfer

As with traditional skylights, elements such as the time of day and the presence

of cloud cover also affect the lighting levels that illume emits. We call this

‘ambient light technology’ and it ensures that illume behaves exactly as a traditional

skylight would by creating a balanced harmony between internal and external

lighting conditions.

Expert Advice

What You Need To Know About

Treated TimberJust because timber has the usual treatment green colour, does not necessarily mean it is fit for purpose for the application required. To that end the treated pine industry has produced various levels of treatments that are appropriate for the various building situations builders or those who specify timbers for specific situations, may encounter. Treated Pine Industry of Australia has produced the following hazard levels;

H1 is the lowest level produced, it is used for protection against internal insects (but NOT Termites), products in which it is used are flooring and furniture. To my knowledge used mainly in New Zealand.

H2 this hazard level protects against Termites and Borers and can be used in inside and in and above ground application. Typical uses are for framing and flooring.

H3 treatment allows timber to be used outside in an above ground situation. This hazard level protects against moderate decay, borers and termites. Typical products are; cladding, fascia, pergolas and decking.

H4 this hazard level protects against severe decay, Termites and Borers and is suitable for use outside and in ground. Typical applications are; fence posts, pergolas, greenhouses and landscaping situations.

H5 protects against very severe decay, Termites and Borers. Typical applications are usually where a product could be termed structurally critical such as; structural retaining walls, house stumps and building poles. It is also suitable for immersion in fresh water.

H6 protects timber against Marine Borer attack and decay. Accordingly, typical applications are uses in marine waters for boat hulls and jetty construction.

There are various types of treatments available, some are considered more environmentally friendly than others. An example of this is where government regulations dictate only some treatments are suitable for communal sites such as playgrounds.

I have been in the timber industry for as long as I care to remember and having said that, I am finding it difficult to keep up with the new treated products on the market.

A principle I have always kept in mind is, that no matter what the timber, the cell structure usually determines if there is treatment penetration. That is, penetration is easily achieved where there is sapwood, because the cells are alive (providing the timber is reasonably dry), compared to the usually accepted concept of non-penetration where the heartwood cells are dead.

Regular readers will remember this situation when I have spoken about the pitfalls using the standard treated pine sleepers because of the amount of heartwood present. Another example of this principle is treated pine posts can have no more than 20% heartwood under the treated pine industry’s regulations. This why it is prudent to apply some paint on treatment solutions to cut ends or bore holes, because untreated timber may be exposed.

However, there has been some revolutionary developments in the treatment industry of late that is producing penetration in the species that are predominantly heartwood like some of our Australian Eucalypts.

VICTORIAN ASHThe species that make up Vic Ash (Alpine & Mountain Ash) are, like most of our eucalypts, where the sapwood is usually a thin band around the outer circumference of the log. Accordingly, the cells are mainly from the dead heartwood. The natural durability (without treatment) is only class 3 above ground.

An innovative new process called “Tru-Core Protection System” is a chemically based process that delivers preservatives and insecticides deep into the core of wood based products. The process has enabled products to achieve H3 & H4 levels, making it suitable for external floor joists, external joinery, claddings, sub-floor timbers and non-structural in ground structures such as pergolas.

THE THERMOWOOD PROCESSIt is a well-established fact that when the surface of wood burns in an open fire, it will make it more durable.

The treatment of wood was scientifically studied in Europe in the 1930’s. This research has been on-going since, but became more intensive and comprehensive in Finland in recent times. Apparently, the wood is heated to 180C. It is protected (from burning) with steam. Besides providing protection, the steam also effects the chemical changes taking place in the wood. As a result of the changes environmentally friendly Thermowood is created.

The process darkens the timber and makes it more durable and stable than normal wood in conditions of changing humidity, as well as improving its thermal properties. This means some of the timbers coming from that area, particularly Baltic Pines which naturally have poor durability ratings, under the Thermowood process become significantly more durable and more stable.

Typical uses are claddings, screen timbers and laminated posts. These products are usually significantly cheaper, when compared to similar products in durable hardwoods.

ACCOYAThis process is also the result of 80 years of research and development that has brought together a long established and proven wood modification technique-Acceleration.

This process changes the balance of naturally occurring chemicals in wood. This process makes the wood inert, giving it more waterproofing properties, making it more durable. Also the wood has enhanced stability and improved thermal properties.

Typical uses include claddings external linings like garage doors, window joinery and laminated beams.

MY THOUGHTS AND SUGGESTIONSMost of the comments above I have taken from the literature submitted from the suppliers of each of the various products, which is obviously based on their research and development. However, these products have not stood the test of time, unlike the standard treated pine treatments that have been on the market for many years.

This is not to say they will not do the job as each supplier has asserted, but I would suggest if you use any of these products, have it cleared and registered with us in case any future problems occur. Like any treated product, best practise in all building applications, that all cutting, notching and holes be brushed or sprayed with an appropriate cut end preservative.

If you would like more information about this subject or technical support, Jeff Harvey is available on 0412 550 740 or email [email protected]

As pictured, the contrast between Sapwood (The deep dark green), and the heartwood (light green with little or no penetration). The heartwood clearly displays the quick growth, meaning little density and structural characteristics.

9APRIL 2015

In February this year the Hire and Rental Industry Association Australia finalised their national Code of Practice for the provision of portable toilet facilities on construction sites and at events.

The code is a set of guidelines for the provision of portable toilets and specifically applies to toilets not connected to a sewer. It takes into account hygiene, health and safety, and existing State based legislation.

With the release of the Code, builders in Victoria can sigh a breath of relief considering we are the only State in Australia that categorically does not allow straight drop toilets on building sites. Straight Drops have an open waste tank with a toilet seat, no toilet bowl or ‘flapper’ and no flushing mechanism! Think 3rd world country and try not to think of the smell! Throughout the rest of the country it is up to builders to check with local councils regarding local regulations on straight drops.

Likewise, Victorian builders can breath easy knowing ‘Recirculating’ toilets are not allowed on building sites in our State. Recirculating toilets use flush water that is drawn from the waste tank, albeit treated with chemicals. There are some companies in Victoria that stock recirculating toilets that can be used at events, but they should not be used in the construction environment as they need much more regular cleaning and pumping to maintain a hygienic environment. All Bowens Hire toilets are ‘fresh water flush’ units providing a fresh flush of water to the bowl each time it’s used. Our toilets also have extra large waste holding tanks. According to the Code, the minimum waste storage capacity for a portable toilet is 100 litres. Our waste tanks exceed this by an extra 290 litres (390ltrs). That’s 650 flushes! Phew!

There are some other things to consider when hiring a portable toilet. Walls should be constructed of weatherproof impervious material and be opaque. Some of the imported toilets to Australia have thin walls allowing a silhouette to be seen through the shell of the toilet.

HRIA CODE OF PRACTICEGuidelines for the Provision of Portable Toilets on Construction Sites

All in all, Bowens Hire toilets can be considered to far exceed the expectations of the National Code of Practice when it

comes to portable builders toilets.

Bowens Hire

No privacy there folks! Not Bowens toilets, we hire good quality Australian made product with a tough outer shell. Toilets should also have a wash basin with the used water discharged to the waste tank. The waste tank itself should be vented through the roof via a minimum 50mm diameter vent stack.

While not a requirement in the guidelines, an additional feature of the Bowens Hire toilets is the lifting lugs that comply with Australian standards. This is a feature not all portable toilets have but an important one for occupational health and safety. Portable toilets can weigh up to 700kg when full! The lugs allow toilets to be craned safely onto site and safely removed at the end of service.

When in comes to servicing you can opt to call Bowens for a regular rostered service. We will simply turn up at site on a regular basis to clean your toilet, replace water and chemicals and replenish toilet paper. We then date stamp the facility for your next rostered service.

All in all, Bowens Hire toilets can be considered to far exceed the expectations of the National Code of Practice when it comes to portable builders toilets.
