Gearing Up for Summer Reading As Youth Services staff design reading templates, organize community sponsorship and develop engaging classes and creative events for families during Summer Reading, we ask that you reach out with your support of this worthwhile mission to keep Iowa readers strong. Staff work to ensure that each child in our community has the opportunity to access books and materials, is rewarded for building their literacy skills during the summer, and connects with others through the fun and safe environment of the library. Yet, we also depend on your participation in the Summer Reading Programs, your word-of-mouth promotion of the library, and your volunteer efforts to encourage each young reader to succeed.

STEM Increasingly, business leaders, educators, industry experts, and others are rallying around the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in education. This is a key issue for K-12 education and public libraries as it is a requirement to create the kind of workforce our country needs. By 2018, 8 million jobs in the U.S. economy will require a college degree in STEM, according to a Georgetown University study. This year’s Summer Reading Program promotes STEM through its themes — Children: Fizz! Boom! Read!, Teens: Spark a Reaction, and Adults: Literary Elements. This summer, Burlington Public Library will con-tinue literacy, numeracy and social development with fun, interactive clas-ses, incentives and events.

The “Summer Slide” Something is waiting for many children every summer, and their parents don’t even know it’s out there. It's called the "summer slide," and it describes what happens when young minds sit idle for three months. Children who do not read over the summer can lose more than two months of reading achievement. Summer reading loss is cumulative. By the end of 6th grade children who lose reading skills over the summer will be 2 years behind their classmates. Register the children in your life and sign up yourself for Summer Reading starting June 6 and avoid the summer slide.

Specifically for Seniors Hungrytown Friday, April 4, 10:00 AM  HUNGRYTOWN, which is the musical and married duo of Ken Anderson and Rebecca Hall, have been making music full time since swapping their midtown New York cubicles for the hills of New England in 2004. Since then, the couple has been touring extensively, and has released two CDs, the self-titled Hungrytown (2008) and Any Forgotten Thing (2011), both of which receive high critical acclaim and much airplay in North America and Europe.

Goode Rebeka—“The Salem Witch Trials” WEDNESDAY, May 7, 10:00 AM  It was a new world. The settlers from England had gained a foothold in the verdant land called “Amerika”. Old traditions would be laid aside, new ones instituted. Greed, jealousy, suspicion would still persist. Were these at the root of the Salem Witch trials? Innocent residents of Salem, Massachusetts were tried, and many executed, in perhaps the most infamous chapter in early American history. Jessica Michna has become widely known for her riveting portrayals of First Ladies and other historic women as well as her fictitious characters. She has entertained groups throughout America including guests from as far away as New Zealand, Japan and Brazil.

Hollands!: Merry Making Nomads Friday, June 6, 10:00 AM  The Hollands! are seasoned concert performers, engaging audiences with their intimate merrymaking. They are a full-time internationally touring family based in the US via Australia with a knack for engaging audiences and rousing a sing-a long. They are 21st century nomadic travelers and frolic in the organic folk revival scene.

night owls When we grow into sensible, mature adults with a million responsibilities, we often stop making time to learn all those little things that make life more pleasurable, inviting, creative and delicious.

This is why your Burlington Public Library has created a new series of free, quarterly programs for adults called Night School.

Beginning this April, we’ll meet quarterly on Google Hangout to learn about podcasting. Call the library to learn more about night owls on Google Hangout or email Mallorie at [email protected]

Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich, shape, and address local issues.

Librarians work with residents to discover what their community’s needs are and to meet them.

The Burlington Public Library serves the area community by providing fiction and nonfiction materials in all formats, specialized digital resources and downloadable materials, technology access, job seeking tools, early literacy classes, and cultural and educational opportunities for all ages.

“Service to the community has always been the focus of the library,” said Burlington Public Library Director Rhonda Frevert. “While this aspect has never changed, libraries have grown and evolved in how they provide for the needs of every member of their community.” The Burlington Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by sharing your stories on how library services and resources have helped change your life. Please share your story with us.

Your library is dedicated to making Burlington a great place to live, work, and play.

out & about staff picks “Since April is National Poetry month, I recommend checking out the library’s 811 section in Non-Fiction. I suggest two great events happening in our community as well.” — Samantha On April 23rd at 8pm Poet Odd?Rod will be on the Chapel stage at Iowa Wesleyan College. Born to a drug-addicted mother and an absent father, Odd?Rod’s humble beginnings have turned into the very tools needed to save and inspire communities across northeast Florida. He continues to speak at local schools, colleges, rehab centers, and jails. The audience identifies with his 'picture painting' poetry. His rhythmic cadence makes him both a joy and a learning experience to listen to. Check him out at oddrod.net.

Vince Gotera is visiting the Little Theatre at Southeastern Community College for a free, public event on Saturday, April, 12 7:45 p.m. Vince Gotera is an American poet and writer, best known as Editor of the North American Review. Also see her Welsh trilogy beginning with Here Be Dragons. — Tegan

Foreign Film Barbara Set in East Germany, this film follows a woman who plots her escape to West Germany and the challenges and people she encounters. This is a quietly tense film with great character study. — Tegan
