Brain Structure

Brain Stem

• 3 parts • Medulla Oblongata• Pons• Midbrain

Brain Stem Functions

• Visual and auditory reflexes

• Relays sensory impulse

• Controls vital visceral functions • Heartbeat • Respiratory • Vasomotor• Digestion

Cerebellum (Little Brain)

• Function • Sensing posture and balance

• Coordinates muscle movements

Diencephalon

• 2 parts • Hypothalamus • Thalamus

• Functions: • Receives ALL sensory input and

relays to cerebral cortex for interpretation • Homeostasis regulation:

Temperature (Hypothalamus)• Emotional Responses (limbic

system)

Cerebrum

• Functions • Higher brain functions

• Memory • Reasoning • Intelligence • Personality

• Voluntary muscles movements

Corpus Callosum

• Function • Connects the left and right hemispheres brain

• Is severed surgically to treat patients who suffer from epileptic seizures (Corpus Callosotomy)

Lobes of Cerebrum

• Frontal • Parietal • Occipital • Temporal

Frontal Lobe

• Reasoning • Planning • Problem Solving • Emotions • Parts of Speech and Movement

Parietal Lobe

• Perception of stimuli related to: • Touch • Pressure • Temperature • Pain • Smell

Occipital Lobe

• Vision • Processes what your eyes

are seeing

Temporal Lobe

• Perception and recognition of auditory stimuli • Memory (hippocampus) • If damaged long-term memory is

impaired
