The latest advance is to transition to the use of digital technology to produce highly detailed images of the breast. him much pleasure and motivation for therapy.

· A complex care patient struggled with depression due to his physical limitations and long hospitalization. A former guitar player, his disability took away his ability to play. When he started music therapy he began to get out of bed much more often. At first he got up to listen to her music. Later on, he used what dexterity he retained to improvise on xylophone while Tomoko accompanied on piano. The patient said those musical collaborations were the highlight of his week.

These are only a few of our countless stories of music therapy’s benefits. Our program relies on grants and donations (not hos-pital operational funding), so we are grateful for the community support and partnership that makes music therapy possible.

Neurologist Oliver Sacks observed, “the power of music to integrate and cure is quite fundamental. It is the profoundest nonchemical medication.” I am sure he would echo the words- “Play, Play, Play!”

Some time ago, Tomoko (our resident music therapist) and I were offering music at the bedside of a palliative patient. Her husband and daughter were present. The patient said the music was very nice and it distracted her from her pain. After a couple songs we wondered if she would like more music or if she was ready for some quiet. When we asked, she replied, “play, play, play!”

Perhaps “Play, Play, Play” could be the motto for our Music Therapy Programs. Since 2007, thousands of hospital patients and their loved ones have benefitted from the life-enhancing and occasionally transforming power of therapeutic music.

What does music therapy do? Here are a few examples:· On the second last day of her life, a patient and her daughter listened to Tomoko play three of the patient’s favourite songs. Mother and daughter were deeply moved and filled with peace and wonder while they listened.

Message from Sherri Bocchini President & CEO of the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation.

It is an exciting time at the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation. We recently celebrated the Family Birthing Centre announcement; this will provide expectant mothers access to state-of-the-art birthing facilities. The BCHSF would like to express our sincere thanks to the many generous donors that have supported this initiative.

Thanks to our wonderful donors, the BCHS Foundation is proud to provide grants to purchase many new pieces of critical patient equipment. Over the past 5 years we have granted more than $13 million to support the great work of the BCHS.

I am thrilled to introduce our brand new BCHS Foundation website. It is our opportunity to share how your gifts are transforming healthcare in our community. Be sure to visit www.bchsysfoundation.org and take a look! You can also now follow us on Twitter: @bchsfoundation And like us on Facebook: @Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation.

Thank you for your support and investment; we are truly grateful! Together, we are transforming healthcare in our community. I wish you and your family a happy holiday season and good health in the New Year. Sincerely,

The Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign in September proved that $1 can make a difference in our community.

This year, the Smile Cookie Campaign raised $ 55,062 in support of the BCHS Foundation. Brantford and St. George restaurants raised $49,077 in support of Cancer Care at the BCHS and Paris restaurants raised $5,985 to benefit The Willett, Paris. To date, this initiative has generated more than $230,000 in support of the BCHS! Special thanks to Tim Hortons, our local store owners and to the many Tim Hortons patrons for their investment in our healthcare system.

This leadership gift to the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation demonstrates that Tim Hortons’ supports the BCHS’s vision of “Leading the Way - Exemplary Care”.

The BCHS received wonderful news in August of this year. Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Deb Matthews, visited the Brantford General site and announced that we are recipients of a new family birthing centre. This long anticipated announcement was welcomed joyfully by the employees of the BCHS as it will mean better access to state-of-the-art birthing facilities, close to home. With this funding from the Ontario government, and the many generous donors who supported this initiative, plans are already underway to make this important project a reality for new and growing families in our area!

Currently, there are approximately 1600 births annually at the Brantford General site; about 400 births receive specialized medical care. The new, renovated maternal care and constant care nursery program will include a new five room family birthing centre, a 17-bed

postpartum unit and a constant care nursery. All our newborns will have leading-edge equipment and facilities that will allow the BCHS to continue to provide our youngest population with the highest standard of care.

“It’s so important that families - including expectant mothers and newborns - get the very best health care in the modern, safe, state-of-the art birthing centre. I am delighted to give our approval and support for the renovation of maternal care facilities at the Brantford General Hospital so that local residents have better access to these high quality services during a very special time in their lives.” – Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care

“We’re pleased to have the support of the government to move forward with our renovation and expansion of the maternal care and constant care nursery. These improvements will enable us to offer high quality maternal and newborn care to our community.” – Jim Hornell, President & CEO, Brant Community Healthcare System
