Cartola

Cartola and his wife, Zica

Cartola (Top Hat, 1902-1980) was one of the main representatives of the first generation of samba composers, having

worked in the years 1930 and 1970. Born and raised in very humble circumstances, was one of the founding composers of

Mangueira (mango tree) Samba School, in Rio de Janeiro, perhaps the most popular in Brazil.

With his art, Cartola overcame poverty and little education, expressing in his compositions and poetry one sensitivity,

wisdom and sophistication that were not uncommon at that time in the shantytowns, where lived many other great samba

composers, before the genre became exaggerated and just a marketing target for tourists.

‘Roses do not Talk’ is one of his major compositions, a slow samba (samba-blues), which can be heard in the recording

indicated below, with author singing accompanied by a typical set of that time, called "regional", formed by guitars, flute and

tambourine.

Roberto Menescal e Ronaldo Bôscoli, nos anos 60s

Bossa Nova was a derivation of samba adapted from the popular slums to the urban environment of the

middle class in Rio de Janeiro, mostly the youth resident in Copacabana and Ipanema, a time remembered as

the "golden years" of the city (and the country) - from 1950 to 1970.

Among those young musicians, many of them influenced by jazz, stood out since the beginning, Roberto

Menescal (1937-) and Ronaldo Bôscoli (1928-1994), authors of many successes of the style, among which

stands out the Little Boat, which well expresses the spirit of the urban youth of that time, when Rio was still

the capital of Brazil, with no major concerns ...

The recordings indicated bring The Little Boat interpreted by the greatest icons of Bossa Nova, beginning

with Joao Gilberto, whose way of singing and playing the guitar are the greatest artistic expression of style.

Tom Jobim

Antonio Carlos Jobim e Vinicius de Moraes

The partnership between the musician Tom Jobim (1927-1994) and the poet Vinicius de Moraes (1913-1980)

produced several bossa nova standards, famous not only in Brazil but all over the world.

The obvious choice would be ‘The Girl from Ipanema’, but we prefer to show ‘Water to Drink’, which will

explore another dimension of Brazilian culture, the black roots expressed in the chorus inspired by capoeira

fighting songs. Capoeira is a martial art that is also a dance developed by African slaves in Brazil to self-

defense. Leave the boats and girls on the beach and reach the tragic and divine feelings of love and pardon.

"Drinking water" is a disguised way of referring to cachaça, the high alcohol drink produced from sugarcane.

"Camará" is a shorthand way of saying fellow (comrade, chum), widely used in capoeira.

Caetano Veloso

Caetano Veloso (1942- ) is maybe (I think so) our most important composer since the 1960s.

He is our Bob Dylan, if you understand me.

He composed London, London when he lived in England, exiled by the military regimen during the late 60s.

Caetano was not leftist, but he was too modern and strange for the military standards of those times.

Milton (1942- ), with his clear crystal voice, brings to us another facet of Brazilian music and culture, coming

from the mountains made of iron and faith that symbolize the state of Minas Gerais (‘general mines’, for its

wealthy made of gold, emeralds, and the never ending iron fields.

Raul Seixas

Raul Seixas and Paulo Coelho in the 70s

Raul Seixas (1945-1989) was born in Bahia, the heart of Brazilian black culture, the land of samba, of capoeira, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Joao Gilberto, Dorival Caymmi - but his trip was always the good old rock n ' roll, since his adolescence in the '50s, imitating Little Richard and Elvis Presley.

And it was not only the rhythm that drew him, but all that lifestyle, a rebel poet with a guitar in hand and a leather jacket in search of a meaning to life. Then he also mimicked Bob Dylan, and very well.

Later in his search – and according to the spirit of the time - Raul was drawn to the mystical world, and came to join the Order of the Golden Dawn, becoming Aleister Crowley’s disciple along with his partner Paulo Coelho (1947-) - today a very famous writer around the world, author of the bestseller ‘Diary of a Magus’.

Several songs of theirs have references to Hinduism, to early Christianity and Buddhism, and the song ‘Gita’ was their greatest success - inspired by the ‘Bhagavad Gita’, the holy book of the Hare Krishna.

Even today the "Mad Beauty" maintains a legion of fans attracted by his libertarian and spontaneous style, his talent and messages, always contemporary and ahead - of which the song ‘Try Again’ is a good example.

Leo Gatti

Leo Gatti is a Brazilian composer and keyboardist, singer and

teacher who’s always playing and singing for everyone,

everywhere.

He can play anything you want, but this time he’s coming to

Europe to perform and teach us how to play eight remarkable

songs, by eight of Brazil’s most celebrated composers and

poets.

If you like Brazilian music and/or culture, or if you study

Portuguese, you’ll enjoy attending the workshops, playing and

singing along with Leo, or just listening to the songs and the

brief comments on them, their authors and their historical

context.
