COURSE SYLLABUS MATH 1324 – Finite Mathematics

Course Description/Overview: This course will introduce you in the wonderful land of Mathematics applied in economics. At the end of the semester will be able to understand and apply mathematics in many businesses and economics fields. We will learn concepts as simple, compounded or continuous interests, revenue, cost and profit functions, basic statistics and probabilities, besides other pure math concepts as matrices. The list of concepts do not stop here and I will let you the pleasure of discovering. Textbook: TAN 7 College Mathematics for the Managerial, Life, and Social Sciences by Soo T. Tan Required Material: Graphing Calculator TI 83 or better. Prerequisites:

The course Math 1314 “College Algebra” passed with a grade of C or better. Course Outcomes:

1. Compute accrued compound interest earned by a lump sum investment. 2. Find the future value of an ordinary annuity. 3. Find the present value of an ordinary annuity. 4. Solve a system of equations. 5. Perform matrix multiplication. 6. Find the inverse of a square matrix. 7. Solve a linear programming problem graphically. 8. Solve a linear programming problem with the simplex method. 9. Solve an application using linear programming. 10. Apply permutations and combinations to counting problems. 11. Compute probability using addition and multiplication rules. 12. Solve a problem using conditional probability. 13. Measure the center of a set of data. 14. Compute the expected value of a discrete random variable. 15. Calculate the probability of an event

Assessments:

During the semester there will be several unannounced quizzes, two (2) Tests and one (1) Final Exam. The homework will not be collected and graded; part of it will be included in the given assessments.

Any written open-answer assessment must contain all the steps performed in order to get the solution and must be presented in a mathematical methodical manner. No make up work is allowed unless extraordinary circumstances by providing official documents.

Grading Policy/Evaluation: The grades will be counted in the following way:

Quizzes 25%

Tests’ average 45% Final Exam: 30%

COURSE SYLLABUS MATH 1324 – Finite Mathematics

Final Exam: The Final Exam is mandatory and comprehensive. Missing the Exam will be reflected as failure of the

course. The final exam will be open answer test and must contain all steps in solving exercises. No make-up is allowed for the Final. Homework:

The instructor will regularly assign homework (see attach). The homework will not be collected all the semester period. It is the students’ responsibility to practice all the assigned exercises. The most questions on any Quiz, Class Assignment or Exam will be chosen from the homework sets, or similar.

As part of the homework the students must read the lesson before coming to class.

Quizzes: Unannounced quizzes similar with the homework exercises or “now practice exercises” can be given at

any time during the class. No make up quizzes is allowed unless extraordinary circumstances by, providing official documents.

Tests:

Two (2) Tests will be administrated in the regular class. They will open-answer tests where the students are required to show all the work performed on the tests’ paper in a methodical manner.

The dates for the Tests are stated on the Schedule (see attached), as tentative; the instructor will announce the exact date and time in the class, prior. For this reason, no make-up test is allowed unless extraordinary circumstances by providing official documents. Grading Scale:

Unless an announced in changes is made, the following scale will be applied for this course: A: 90-100; B: 80-89; C: 70-79. D: 60-69 F: < 60.

Attendance:

The students are strongly encouraged to attend every lecture class. Each class meeting is considering as an entity. After 3 absences the instructor will consider “excessive absences” and may fail or drop the student.

To avoid unnecessary class disruptions, the students are expected to arrive on time and remain seated until the class is dismissed. If a student is coming late in class, the instructor may consider it as an absence.

The time spent in the class, the student will follow the instructor’s directives and will respect the School’s student conduct (including academic honesty). Dropping policy: From Brazosport College calendar, you can find the last day when you can get a W for this course. After this date no late dropping form will be signed by your instructor, unless extraordinary circumstances, official documented. To be eligible for a reinstatement, the student must bring official documents and have an average of at least 70% in his/her class participation. Academic Honesty: Brazosport College assumes that students eligible to perform on the college level are familiar with the ordinary rules governing proper conduct including academic honesty. The principle of academic honesty is that all work presented by you is yours alone. Academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, and collusion shall be treated appropriately. The students caught cheating will be “awarded” with an F for the entire course and she/he cannot return in the class after the incident. Time requirement:

Taking into account the volume of the information and the homework assigned, a minimum of 7 hours a week outside of class is required for the course preparation including reading the lessons from the textbook, reviewing the class notes and complete the homework and project assessment. . A team of Tutors is available for you on wing E 200 and you can contact them at 230-3527.

Any further information will be presented in class by the instructor and is the student’s responsibility to be informed. 2. There will be no office hours during the Final Exam Week.

3. There will be no assessments at the end of the semester to increase the grades. The students MUST perform the work during the all 16 weeks period.
