Rise and Shine:

What kids around the world eat for breakfast

Food is an important part of a culture, and it can be very different in different

places. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so let's look at what

children eat for breakfast in different countries. Children in America usually eat

sweet cereal for breakfast, but children in other places sometimes eat fish or

pickles. Drinks are also different in different countries. Milk is popular in many

countries, but some children drink tea, water, or even coffee with breakfast.

Birta, Reykjavik, Iceland.

Birta eats oatmeal with raisins and

milk for breakfast. She also had a

spoonful of fish oil every morning.

Fish oil has lots of Vitamin D, which

most people can get from sunlight.

However, Iceland is very dark during

the winter, so Birta can't get her

Vitamin D from sunlight and she has

to get it from fish oil instead.

Viv, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

For Viv, breakfast is a glass of milk

with bread, butter and — most

important — sweet sprinkles. These

sprinkles which come in different

flavors (chocolate, vanilla, fruit) and

sizes (small, large, shavings). Every

day, more than 750,000 slices of

bread topped with chocolate

sprinkles are eaten in the

Netherlands. Viv likes the fruit-

flavored sprinkles better than the

chocolate ones though.

Aricia and Hakim, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Aricia’s pink cup is full of chocolate milk,

but her brother Hakim’s cup contains

coffee with milk. In many countries,

people think giving coffee to young

children is very bad, but in Brazil it's

normal. Parents believe that coffee has

important vitamins and antioxidants and

that it helps children learn better in

school. The brother and sister are eating

ham and cheese as well as bread with

butter.

Phillip and Shelleen, Malawi

Phillip and his twin sister, Shelleen,

start their day with sweet cornbread.

Their grandmother cooks it in an aluminum

pot over a fire. They also eat boiled

potatoes and black tea with a spoonful or

two of sugar.

Oyku, Istanbul, Turkey

The main part Oyku's breakfast is brown bread. She eats a lot of different sweet

and salty toppings. She likes green and black olives, sliced tomato, hard-boiled

egg, Nutella, strawberry jam, and honey-butter. She also eats a lot of different

Turkish cheeses made from cow or goat's milk, and she drinks milk.
