Safer swimmer, safer summerDoes a long hot summer mean spending as much time as possible in water – a pool in your garden, leisure centre, river, pond, outside swimming pool, the sea?
Most of the time you and your friends will just have fun splashing about keeping cool but would you know what to do if something went wrong?
Check out a Wise up to Water Safer Summer workshop and learn what to do. This great workshop teaches you the Water Safety code, how to keep safe and how to help someone who is in trouble without putting yourself in danger. You will also learn how to bodyboard, throw a rope and be a lifesaver.
If you can already swim 100 metres or have got your Dolphin 7 award this course is suitable for you. Courses are available in Leeds City Council Leisure Centres: to find out where, contact [email protected] or phone 0113 2475243.

A SHOCKING WARNINGSTAY AWAY! STAY ALIVE!
If they are going fishing, you should warn them to stay at least 30 metres away from any overhead wires and take their fishing rods apart before moving from one place to another.
Warn your children if their football goes inside an electricity substation, or if vandals have broken in and left the doors open, to STAY OUT. Ring us on the number shown on the substation or in the phone book substation or in the phone book under “E” for electricity and we’ll come straight away.
Never climb pylons aselectricity can jump gaps and kill you.
Make sure they are aware that flying kites near overhead wires is very dangerous. If their kite does get stuck in wires, they must leave it alone and stop anyone from touching the string.
“The students, staff and parents are always keen to work with us, and feel comfortable speaking to officers about drugs and weapons awareness, and issues that affect them.
“I believe that our work within schools has had a huge impact on young people and their relationships with the police, and by expanding the Safer Schools Partnershipsacross the force we’re reaching out to even more young people to help them develop, for their benefit and for the benefit of our schools and communities.”
Offi cers across West Yorkshire have been going back to class by stepping up patrols in and around schools across the county.
The Safer Schools Partnerships scheme has been established across the Force, aimed at linking the three strands of youth-offending, education and children’s services together.
Across West Yorkshire Police there is a team made up of 18 Schools Liaison Offi cers, 43 Safer Schools Partnership Offi cers – a signifi cant increase since March 2008.
In Leeds, 24 offi cers based in 38 high schools have been working directly alongside teachers and staff to support education on citizenship, personal safety and weapons and drugs awareness.
Offi cers have also been tackling issues which occur in schools, including absenteeism and truancy, along with offering wider support in local communities as part of the Every Child Matters agenda.
For more information, please contact Sergeant Bob Bowman:[email protected]
“Building even stronger links between schools, the three
Leeds policing divisions and the many organisations that we
and Safer Leeds work with will ensure that every pupil in
Leeds has the opportunity to receive extra support they may
need, which will help them to develop socially, overcome
issues that may affect them, and in extreme circumstances
steer them away from offending.
“Our schools are very safe places to be, and by working
even closer together we can ensure that both our schools
and the local communities within Leeds become even safer.”
Chief Supt Mark Milsom is the lead offi cer for the Safer Schools Partnership said:
Jean Clennell, Deputy Head teacher at Roundhay school technology college, said:
Sergeant Bob Bowman, Youth Crime Reduction Offi cer, has worked with schools for several years. He said:
“We have worked for the past fi ve years under
the safer school partnership model along with West Yorkshire Police and
partner agencies. Developing a good working relationship, especially with the Police service,
has assisted us greatly in all areas of support for our pupils, staff, parents and the local community.
“Schools have a lot to gain from establishing a safer school partnership and we would highly
recommend this approach. It is an ideal framework to help in delivering the Every
Child Matters key objectives.”
