These are just a few of the specialties of this area, the ideal place to relax and establish a base from which to explore the South West region’s wealth of attractions.

Just three hours drive from the Perth area and only 116kms from Margaret River and the coastal strip on the newly sealed Mowen Road - Bridgetown-Greenbushes - Simply Beautiful.

history of BridgetoWn

Augustus C. Gregory conducted the first official survey of the Nelson land district in 1852. Two of the first settlers, E G Hester and John Blechynden arrived in the mid-19th century and leased areas of land for grazing stock. The 21 year old Blechynden took up 4,000 acres and built his homestead ‘Bridgedale’ close to the river. The house is now owned by the National Trust.

As the population grew, the town site was gazetted as ‘Geegelup’ in 1862. Later, however, John Allnut, the first settler to establish orchards in the area, suggested the name be changed to Bridgetown to reflect the town’s location on the Blackwood River and also after the ship ‘SS Bridgetown’ which had put in at Bunbury to load the first consignment of wool from Bridgetown. After many debates Governor Hampton officially gazetted the town as Bridgetown on 4 June 1868.

With the opening of the railway on 7 October 1898, there existed an immense potential for new markets for fruit and the district rapidly expanded, based on the orchard and mixed farming industries. The district also had many timber mills and so developed into an important commercial centre for the inland regions of the south west.

While the buildings and streetscape reflect different eras of its 140 year history, together they form a homogenous scene as 100 year old buildings stand comfortably next to more recent structures. Bridgetown is the only town in the south west of Western Australia classified as a heritage town (in 2000) by the National Trust of Australia.

general information

The Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes is situated in the south west of Western Australia approximately 270kms from Perth and covers an area of 1691sq km. Bridgetown is the host to significant events such as the Easter Lawn Tennis Tournament, The Rotary Blackwood Marathon, Blues@Bridgetown Festival, Festival of Country Gardens, Blackwood Valley Chamber Music Festival and the Bridgetown in the Winter festival, to name a few.

Mining, agriculture, timber and tourism are the largest industries in the shire.

The estimated resident population of the shire is 4,513 with 2,733 persons living within the Bridgetown town boundary, 375 in Greenbushes and the remainder in the surrounding rural areas.

the traffic bridges - In 1861 settlers of the district petitioned the authorities for a bridge across the Blackwood River at Austin’s Ford and a bridge was built in 1862. This bridge was swept away just before completion.

A second bridge was built upstream but that was replaced by a third bridge built in 1888 for 997 pounds. None of the timber was milled - it was all sawn or hewn and the bolts were made on site.

The fourth bridge was constructed by the Main Roads Department in 1936 for 5,000 pounds. It was widened more than 30 years later to cope with the increasing traffic.

The current bridge is the fifth road bridge built over the Blackwood River and was built by the MRD at a cost of $320,000 funded by the State and Commonwealth. It was constructed of jarrah timbers in 1980. It has a total length of 127.5m and has 17 spans which makes it the longest road bridge in the south west of WA.

the railway bridges - On 5 December 1896 the rail line from Donnybrook to Bridgetown was competed. Two years later on 1 November 1898 the timber-trestle railway bridge was opened (as pictured under construction).

The timber-trestle bridge was decommissioned on the 10th of July 1965 and two days later the first train crossed on the newly constructed concrete and steel railway bridge. This new bridge continued in service until the rail service to Bridgetown ceased in 2005.

history of greenBushes

The first inhabitants were the indigenous Nyungar people whose community was on the Blackwood River. As well as the indigenous community there were people travelling from Bunbury to settlements further south who stopped at a local well for water. The location of the well was distinguished by the callistachys lanceolata bush which is bright green in colouring. Thus the name Greenbushes!

In the 1880’s the gold rush started and prospectors started what was called scratching in and around Greenbushes. While looking for traces of gold Mr Hardman a government geologist told a Bunbury resident, Mr Stinton of the likelihood of tin in Greenbushes. In 1888 Mr Stinton found tin and applied for a 400 acre mining lease. Within one year his lease was very profitable and as mining grew so did Greenbushes. In 1892 there were 200 mining leases, 8 business licences, and 6476 letters, 516 telegrams and 77 money orders sent from the post office. In 1894 the first timber mill was established and in 1898 the first freehold settlers arrived. As the tin mine and timber industries expanded and the number of settlers increased the population increased substantially. By 1904 the population was 3000 and there were 159 miners, plus storekeepers, carriers, carpenters, tinsmiths, solicitors, mining agents, chemists, butchers,

tailors, boot makers, bakers, teamsters, boarding house keepers, farmers, graziers, timber lessees as well as four hotel owners/managers!

the Brierley Jigsaw gallery - located within the Visitor Centre. This is the only jigsaw gallery in the southern hemisphere.

This collection was started by Mrs Jessica Brierley when she owned Nelson’s House (now Nelsons of Bridgetown Motel) in the 1950s and 60s. This was at the time a boarding house where she placed jigsaws out for her guests to do which she then framed and hung on the bedroom walls. When Nelsons was sold, Mrs Brierley moved the puzzles to her house in Hampton Street and then when the Bridgetown Visitor Centre opened in 1978 the jigsaws were again moved and thus the jigsaw gallery was opened. Since then many puzzles have been donated, ranging from the world’s smallest wooden puzzle to huge 9,000 piece puzzles. Admission is by donation and is open during Visitor Centre hours.

museum - The heritage display within the Visitor Centre depicts the timber industry and apple growing era. There is a variety of items including apple packing equipment from times gone by; many old photographs; weighing scales; household items and farming equipment.

BridgetoWn Wineries/cidery

The Blackwood Valley region is fast gaining a well-deserved reputation for top class wine. In the midst of lush green pastures, rolling hills and towering forests are hidden 50 picturesque vineyards and 19 unique wineries. Visit one or more of our cellar doors and you will be impressed.

Our deep gravel duplex soils and strong loams produce wines with distinctive fruit driven flavours and aromas. Cabernet and shiraz varieties grown in the region are characterised by strong fruit flavours with earthy undertones, while fruit and honey flavours denote the white wine varieties being produced.

One of the advantages of visiting smaller, more boutique, wineries like ours is the sure knowledge that behind every wine is a truly committed and passionate winemaker, who will usually be delighted to talk to you in person about their craft. Their enthusiasm is certainly well reflected in the outstanding quality of local wine. Take the time to learn the stories of the vine and wine directly from the owners and talented winemakers in this remarkable wine country.

The main food and wine festival in our region is the Taste of the Blackwood, currently taking place in Bridgetown in August each year. It’s a weekend-long market-style event especially for food and wine lovers. Indulge yourself with free tastings as you make your way through stalls showcasing the quality, diversity and value of local produce. This family friendly

event also features cooking demonstrations and workshops for adults and children, as well as live entertainment throughout the festival.

The Blackwood Valley & WA Boutique Wine Show is held each October. This wine show only accepts entries from boutique wine producers in Western Australia. Specifically designed to recognise excellence in small WA wineries, it attracts entries from every one of WA’s nine wine regions. The function evening is a not-to-miss opportunity for wine lovers to meet with winemakers and judges, while sampling the premium wines entered for judging by small wineries across the state.

For more details of local wineries and events, please visit www.blackwoodvalleywine.asn.au
