Paul Barber, the club’s chief executive, told Johnny Cantor, the Brighton & Hove Independent columnist, the club would move quickly to identify the right candidate.

Speaking on BBC Sussex, Mr Barber said: “Clearly, we don't want there to be uncertainty for too long, particularly with the transfer window just around the corner.

"This is our opportunity to reinforce the squad where we can. It's never easy to do business in January but if there are possibilities to do that we will."

Tony Bloom, the Albion chairman, is cutting short his annual spell in Australia to spearhead the search for a new manager after accepting Hyypiä’s resignation following a wretched run of just one win in 18 league games.

Karl Robinson appears to fit the Albion profile

Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) has made a formal complaint to Ofsted after a critical inspection report by the education watchdog.

The academy said the report “failed the common-sense test”, as governors expressed misgivings about the way Ofsted inspectors had undertaken the inspection.

Inspectors said the academy “requires improvement”, the third-lowest of four possible verdicts - and the same as when it was last inspected two years ago.

The most recent inspection was conducted on December 3 and 4.

was disappointed with the overall judgment of requires improvement.

“The governing body of the academy have submitted a robust rebuttal against the process and conduct experienced during the inspection in the form of an official complaint and expects to hear back from Ofsted in the new year.”

Dylan Davies, the principal - who joined in January - said: “The staff at BACA are proud of our school and determined to further develop the academy for the benefit of our students and the wider community. We thank everyone for their support.”

Peter Kyle, the chair of governors, said: “Educational improvement has been at BACA’s

heart from the beginning, driven by unstinting commitment by teachers, students and our sponsor.

“That’s why academic achievement has more than doubled, the gap between pupil-premium and non-pupil-premium students has closed and attainment in subjects like English are far exceeding the national average.

“We know more than anyone, therefore, that continuous improvement is required by all schools and accept many of Ofsted’s findings.

“However, governors unanimously felt that the recent inspection did not sufficiently set the need for improvement firmly enough into the context of significant achievement at the school.

“Put simply, the outcome of this inspection has failed the ‘common-sense test’.

“Governors also have significant misgivings around the tone and conduct of inspectors as they dispensed their duties.

“In the interests of defending the astonishing commitment of BACA students and staff, the governing body have taken the tough decision to challenge aspects of this inspection.

“A formal complaint has been submitted to Ofsted and we eagerly await its outcome.”

While many schools complain about Ofsted inspections and challenge the verdicts, it is rare for the watchdog to revise the grade that has been given. It may return earlier than otherwise planned to carry out a reinspection. Join our award-winning

On This Day Excerpts from the recently-published book

Brighton and Hove City Council got into the festive spirit by sending out their army of jobsworths – sorry, traffic wardens – to patrol the streets of the city. The previous month Brighton and Hove was named and shamed as the country’s parking fine capital, with more collected in the city than in any other local authority outside London.

Arson investigation and calls for compulsory purchase after mystery fire at Medina House

> Continued from page 1

An arson investigation was launched after fire caused significant damage to Medina House, an historic former Turkish baths in King's Esplanade, Hove.

Five fire engines were called to the fire - the second in less than two years - at 5.40pm on Saturday (December 20). The swift response to the late-afternoon emergency meant the fire was extinguished before the building was destroyed.

Campaigners have since launched a petition calling on

Brighton and Hove City Council to issue a compulsory purchase order to safeguard the Victorian landmark.

Medina House was built in 1894 as a women's Turkish bath; a neighbouring building that used to house a swimming pool has been demolished.

According to campaigners, the building - in the Cliftonville Conservation Area - was bought 16 years ago for £300,000 by Sirus Taghan from what was Hove Borough Council.

Land Registry records, however, show it changed hands for £150,000 as recently as 2012, when it was bought by Ardeshir Taghan, 59, and Mohammed Jafari, a 58-year-old Iranian businessman.

A planning application was submitted on November 19 by Sirus Taghan, of Globe Homes, to demolish the bullding and build a three- and four-stroey block of eight two-bedroom flats.

Medina House was badly damaged by fire late on Saturday afternoon; the latest planning application for eight two-bedroom flats was submitted on November 19

Much has happened in 2014 to put Brighton and Hove on the map.

After working with our neighbouring areas - including councils, universities and businesses - we won “City Deal” status from government, bringing millions of pounds of investment to our Greater Brighton region.

In the summer, we were also named the third-best city in the country for small and medium-size businesses to grow. And we had record visitor numbers of 10 million people coming to the city.

We won City of the Year Award in Europe for our work on sustainable travel.

Figures this year showed that the number of people killed and

injured on our city streets had fallen - meaning our work to improve travel safety is paying off.

This year, we also opened two new libraries - at Woodingdean and Mile Oak - creating new community hubs for residents to access books and the internet at a time when most other councils are closing them.

2014 has not been without its challenges, but 2015 brings opportunities to address them.

Council officers are working on redesigning the refuse and recycling department to give residents an improved service; work is also due to begin on a permanent travellers’ site, which will help reduce the unauthorised encampments that have disrupted residents and businesses for many years.

The council is consulting on what is going to be its toughest

budget yet, now that our government funding has been cut by some 40%.

The debate comes to a head in February, when councillors will be agreeing the budget and

deciding how best to fund and provide services for residents for the year ahead.

After years of dwindling funds for local services, this time mounting government cuts are

going to hurt. Combined with the general and local elections in May, it’s certain that 2015 will be an extraordinary year for our city. My best wishes to you all for the New Year.

Queen Victoria and an end to Brighton’s royal connection

So far as I can make out, Queen Victoria paid just five visits to Brighton, a town towards which she harboured ambivalent feelings. She first visited Brighton just a few months after her accession, aged 18.

Arriving on October 4, 1837,

dressed in a green silk dress and pink bonnet, she drove beneath a huge celebratory arch covered with evergreens, with her name and coat of arms picked out in dahlias, that was erected near what is now Preston Circus. She stayed six weeks at the Pavilion, which she thought “a strange, odd, Chinese-looking thing, most rooms low”. While here, she sat for portraits, and sang operatic arias at soirées in the Music Room.

She returned for Christmas 1838, but then not again until

February 1842, when she spent a month here with Albert and their first two children, the future Edward VII and the Princess Royal. Even though her visits were likened to “angel’s visits, few and far between”, a full staff was maintained at the Pavilion.

In September 1843, returning from a visit to King Louis-Philippe of France, the queen landed from the Royal Yacht at the Chain Pier. The Prince of Wales and his two sisters, staying at the Pavilion, awaited her, the pier was decked

with flags, and boatloads of supporters cheered her arrival. Nearly 100 people lodged at the pavilion on this occasion. A week later, she sailed again, this time to visit King Leopold of the Belgians.

Although the children visited Brighton in 1844, the queen was to visit only once more, in February 1845, with Albert and their now four offspring. They rode out daily on promenades and excursions. During heavy snow, according to the local paper, “a special messenger was dispatched from the Pavilion to Windsor with Her Majesty’s command for the royal sledge and ponies to be forwarded to Brighton without delay”. As soon as these arrived, the queen, “accompanied by the dowager Lady Lyttleton, who had the Princess Royal in her arms, rode out in the sledge as far as Clayton Tunnel. The sledge was driven by Prince Albert.” Made by Hooper, a London coachmaker, the sledge was painted “a rich ruby colour, picked out in gold,” was lined with crimson plush, and was adorned with a “plume of splendid feathers”.

The royal family returned to London by the new steam railway, and that was the last Brighton would see of them. Apparently irritated by the constant attentions of crowds of onlookers - “the people here are very indiscreet and troublesome”

- Victoria soon acquired a more secluded estate at Osborne on the Isle of Wight. Despite the rebuff, Brighton remained loyal, putting up the Victoria Fountain in 1846, and the queen’s statue in Grand Avenue in 1901.

When, in August 1846, it was announced that the Pavilion was to be sold, Punch magazine jibed, under the caption “Rubbish for Sale”, that only a tea merchant would be interested in such an acquisition. “We know of no other purpose it could be turned to; and with a few paper lanterns and a real native at the door, we feel confident a deal of business in selling tea, or exhibiting curiosities, might be done.”

The fine furniture was removed to Buckingham Palace or Windsor, along with hundreds of cartloads of clocks, china, chandeliers, wall-hangings, looking-glasses, gilt ornaments, hearths, skirting-boards - anything moveable or removeable, in fact. It was a mere shell of a building that the municipal authorities managed to purchase in 1850, for £53,000. According to one witness, the place looked as if it had been plundered by Cossacks or French revolutionaries, or “a host of Californian goldseekers”.

This is the first book of the Cazalet chronicles and I envy

you from the bottom of my heart if you’ve never read it. What a treat is in store for you.

I find this time of year I need a book that completely absorbs me and takes me away from the horrible season of greed and panic shopping that seems to engulf us all. I want to be soothed and stimulated in equal amounts, a bit like nibbling a valium while sipping an espresso. If that’s possible.

Elizabeth Jane Howard does that to perfection. It’s a book of a middle-class family just before the war. Sounds boring? O ye of little faith.

It’s an absolute page-turner - and one that I come back to again and again. If you are a Kindle lover, it has the advantage of the X-ray-enabled button, as the cast of characters is vast and it certainly helps to either read the family tree at the start of the book, or simply press the button on the Kindle.

The "Brig" and the "Duchy" are the grandparents who rule the large house and family in Sussex; the detail of the house, the servants, the cars, even the horses are told in such exquisite detail and with such an eye for the unseen that it will have you enfolded in its charms very quickly.

Ignore the sales, the turkey, and the wrapping paper and enjoy a simpler, kinder and ultimately more fascinating way of life long gone.

In Groundhog Day, Bill Murray uses his endless number of repeats to rescue his career and win the girl - a classic theme of overcoming impossible odds.

In Brighton and Hove's own Groundhog Day, however, I cannot see a happy ending.

Last year, the three city council parties made their positions clear and since then little has changed. Indeed, if anything things have become worse.

Council finances face ongoing challenges that threaten services being slashed and the three parties continue to maintain the same basic positions regarding solving the funding gap.

My own Labour party continues to believe that, in the most challenging financial times, we cannot pass the burden of above-threshold tax rises onto residents. We have even made this view a crucial part of our ongoing contract with the city. The Conservatives have made clear repeatedly that they believe a council tax freeze is possible. The Greens argue that to deliver services requires a council tax rise of 5.9%.

But this is more Whitehall farce than Hollywood blockbuster.

For the Greens to deliver a 5.9% rise, there would need to be a citywide referendum. This is something one of the other parties would have to allow in order for it go ahead.

So now some Tories (keep up at the back!) are suggesting allowing the Greens' 5.9% proposal in order to have a referendum about the proposed

rise. Which they believe would be heavily lost.

I agree entirely with the Labour position that this is not a referendum that can be won, afforded, or justified. Indeed, the referendum would be held on May 7 - the same day as citywide council elections and, of course, the general election. Are these not setting the agenda for the next four to five years?

But the farce does not end there; like the best farces, it has a final twist. To hold a referendum will cost more than £150,000 in election costs alone. A year ago the estimated cost of the referendum being lost was an additional £800,000, to cover rebilling and administration.

So we have three positions: a Green administration that wishes to speculate £150,000 to "win" a three-times inflation council tax rise from the public.

Then there's a Tory group, some of whom now may wager £950,000 in the hope of losing it all and cutting our services.

I'm not a gambler with your finances - I'm Labour. I want elected councillors to do their duty and set a responsible

budget for next year. That's why backing an

unwinnable referendum is a flutter too far. It will lead to an extra round of service cuts which is the last thing we need.

Happy New Year? I doubt it, but let's try.

TORIES BACK COUNCIL TAXREFERENDUMShameless drivers who misuse "blue badges" for people with disabilities will be tracked down and punished in Brighton and Hove.

The city council has won £183,000 of government funding to help enforce laws aimed at ensuring there are enough spaces for those who genuinely need them.

The Audit Commission, the government financial watchdog, estimates one in five blue badges

is abused. According to the latest council

data, there are about 13,000 blue badges in Brighton and Hove. That means at least 2,600 could be being used fraudulently.

With many fraudsters - anecdotally, at least - using 4x4s and high-value vehicles, a council spokesperson said no data was collected about the make or model of car used by blue-badge-holders. She said: “This is because the blue badge does not include the vehicle registration.”

The abuse of blue badges is particularly shocking, because there are only 668 parking bays

for use exclusively by people with disabilities. In addition to these, blue-badge-holders can - as the criminals know - park in pay-and-display bays or for up to three hours on double yellow lines.

Blue badges are available for those who are “unable to walk or have very considerable difficulty in walking” and those who receive benefits because of lack of mobility. The split between the two categories is about equal.

The most recent council parking report reveals 79 people were found to be using badges belonging to dead people.

The council will now be the first

in the country to offer offenders the option of a community resolution order - which would highlight in a video the effects of depriving disabled people of parking spaces - together with a financial penalty (instead of them receiving a criminal record).

Working with Sussex Police and East Sussex County Council, the city council will use the funding to help track down people who are misusing the badges.

The two councils are both providing additional funding of £30,000.

Burning the Clocksturns 21Burning the Clocks, the annual procession to mark the winter solstice, celebrated its 21st year in style. Lanterns lit up the city centre as hundreds of children and their families made their way to the seafront. Many children made their own lanterns using kits provided by Same Sky, the community arts charity. A cycle lane that is part of the £600,000 renovation of the Vogue Gyratory has been repaired after a "hidden kerb" was blamed for a series of accidents only days after it opened. Six people said they had come off their bicycles because of the flaw. Despite the introduction of new cycle lanes, many cyclists still prefer to ride on pavements around the notorious junction.

Juice 107.2 toy appeal receives 1,000 giftsNow in its second year, the Juice 107.2 Toy Appeal attracted more than 1,000 Christmas gifts for underprivileged children in Brighton and Hove.

The toys have been divided between six local charities: Salvation Army, Fun in Action, BUCFP, Brighton & Hove TUC Unemployed Workers Centre, RISE, and Brighton Oasis Project.

Pippa Atkinson, the toy appeal founder, said: “This year we’ve had a phenomenal response. It’s the second Christmas we’ve run the appeal and word is obviously getting out. We’ve had a lot of very generous donations from both individuals and companies.”

One donation was made by a family who had themselves benefitted from a Christmas appeal in the past; now in a position where

they can give back, they donated a selection of toys, each worth £10.

A group of unemployed 16- to 24-year-olds enrolled in a Prince’s Trust course fundraised for a whole day at the Holmbush Shopping Centre to raise money to buy toys for the appeal.

Local businesses have also shown their support; Domestic & General set up collection boxes at its offices in Queen Square, with employees donating more than 125 toys; Skerritts Wealth Management made a donation worth £2,000; Meers Group, MRL Consulting, and Brighton & Hove Albion also made big donations.

Nicki Perry, HR manager at Domestic & General, said: “The thought of children going without is horrible and I’m so pleased we’ve been able help local families who

are struggling this Christmas. A lot of our employees are parents and the appeal obviously struck a chord. We had a huge number of toys donated.”

The Salvation Army is passing on toys to those in most need, including asylum-seekers and victims of domestic abuse who have left their homes with nothing. Other charities have organised Christmas parties for underprivileged children, during which they are visited by Father Christmas and given their toys.

The younger brother of Jugal Sharma, - the suspended head of housing with Brighton and Hove City Council - runs a property company that has received up to £20 million in taxpayers’ money to provide homes for the homeless.

Ashley Parker - previously known as Ashone Sharma and Ashoni Parker - is a director and majority shareholder in KEM Property Services Limited (KEM), which has provided temporary accommodation in Brighton and Hove for nearly a decade.

Mr Parker, 51, became a director in March 2008; he became a shareholder in February 2009. By which time, KEM owned at least six houses in the city - using mortgages with the Royal Bank of Scotland that totalled more than £3 million.

A number of properties sub-let by KEM were reportedly owned at the time by Mr Parker, but the company paid the mortgages on them.

Brighton & Hove Independent has teamed up with New Priory Vets, Vets 2 Home, and Dogs Trust Shoreham to help find homes for some of Brighton and Hove’s unwanted dogs. Each week the newspaper will feature a different dog currently awaiting a new home. This week is Poppy...

Factfile:

“Poppy is your typical spaniel and just loves chasing after a ball and playing in the water. For her age poppy is still a very active dog. She loves to swim, and luckily our centre is next to a river and the beach.

“Poppy is a lovely dog and will make someone a smashing companion. She is looking for a nice quiet household where she can snooze somewhere cozy after a nice muddy walk.

“She is unhappy around children so she does need an adult-only home. She would also like to be the only pet.

“Poppy has had surgery on her right ear, this has left her with a bit of a head tilt.

“Her new owners will also need to do many visits for Poppy to get to know them, as she does take a while to feel relaxed with new people.”

Can you offer Poppy a home? If you can, call the Rehoming Centre on 01273 452576. Information on all animals in need of a new home is online at: www.dogstrust.org.uk

The holidays are here and with them can come a mixed bag of emotions. On one hand, the holidays bring fun, excitement, and joy about the celebrations and time spent with family and friends.

On the other hand, the holidays can trigger and enhance difficult emotions such as regret, loneliness, and most of all, grief. Many people experience strong grief reactions during the holidays and this includes “pet parents”.

“Anniversary grief reactions” are a well-studied, documented phenomenon that can appear and affect people during the holidays. Anniversary and holiday reactions occur because events that have special meaning to us naturally make us think about our loved ones. When the event occurs without that loved one, our grief gets stirred up and we find ourselves having to revisit our grief in powerful and unexpected ways. If you have lost your pet during this emotionally-charged time, it’s important to be aware of this and to understand what’s happening. No matter what holiday is celebrated, if you feel irritable, sad, or just generally “beside yourself”

you may be having an anniversary or holiday grief reaction.

However you don’t have to let it completely take over your holidays. Here are a few tips to positively deal with anniversary grief. Although some of you might celebrate a holiday other than Christmas, I would like to offer my support with the help of an American colleague of mine (Dana Durrance, a Veterinary Grief Specialist) and of Charles Dickens’ immortal classic, “A Christmas Carol”:

The Ghost of Christmas Past: Memories of our pets are unique and treasured parts of the relationships we shared with them. They can bring both happiness and sadness, but they are ours to keep forever. Believe it or not, memories can provide comfort. Pull out your photo albums or video recordings of your pets and reflect on some of the happy times and that your pets will always be an important part of your life that you carry in your heart every day.

The Ghost of Christmas Present: Reminds us to share the special memories with understanding friends and family who will support us in the present. Talk about your grief openly instead of trying to suppress it, hoping it will go away on its own. In the

end, expressing grief openly eases the pain and makes it more likely to go away sooner. Ignoring it, or pushing it away often makes it that much stronger and difficult to deal with.

The Ghost of Christmas Future: If you haven’t done so already, think about ways to memorialise your pet or if you’ve already done so…it’s ok to do it again at this time!

Memorialisation is one of the most positive and effective ways to deal with grief. There’s an old expression in therapy; feelings that move, change. Take charge of your future healing process by getting your feelings moving! At this time remember also that reaching out to those who may seem most unlovable, offering our love, compassion and support are what the holidays are all about.

BusinessTwo companies on short list to revive King Alfred centre

Two companies have been shortlisted in the search for a developer for the King Alfred Leisure Centre site on Hove seafront.

They are Bouygues Development and Crest Nicholson Regeneration. Crest Nicholson is working in partnership with the Starr Trust, a charity set up by Rob Starr, the Hove businessman.

The firms were selected from six applicants by a team of specialist officers from Brighton and Hove City Council, including the heads of planning and sport, advised by Deloitte Real Estate.

The shortlisted bidders were chosen after a pre-qualification stage that considers their relevant experience and technical and professional capability. Other factors included a track record of partnership working and community engagement.

The council is emphasising that the firms have not yet been required to submit any plans at this stage.

The shortlisted companies will now be invited to work up “outline solutions” as part of a competitive dialogue process. This includes drafting design proposals for the sports centre and the enabling development required to pay for it, including the size of such a development.

There would also be a review of any alternative sites that the developers might propose for the sports centre, with the funding coming from an enabling development at the King Alfred site.

Bouygues Development focuses on working in partnership with local authorities and landowners to develop schemes that create a better environment for local communities.

Crest Nicholson is based in Chertsey, in Surrey, and much of its focus is on projects in the south.

Locally, it is best known for the award-winning One Brighton eco-development in the New England Quarter, near Brighton Station.

The Starr Trust works with the local community to help young people fulfil their potential in sport, arts and education.

After a period of dialogue with the council, the bidders will be invited to submit final tenders in May next year. It is hoped that this will lead to a preferred development partner being chosen by the following September.

A preferred development partner is expected to be chosen by September next year

Figures show that the number of visits to Withdean Sports Complex - operated by Freedom Leisure in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council - have increased by 66% since the dramatic transformation of the facility in 2013.

The newly refurbished Withdean Sports Complex opened its doors to the public just over one year ago, on Friday 13th December, following a £2.7 million investment. Extensive changes were made throughout the facility. The gym was enlarged to more than double its size, now offering 125 exercise stations. Two new exercise studios were opened, including a dedicated Myride+ indoor cycling studio. The changing rooms were extended and

refurbished to the standard of a private health club and new male/female integrated sauna cabins were added. A new cafe and bar area was installed, along with three therapy rooms. A 13 metre climbing wall - funded by High Sports, the UK's leading provider of indoor climbing - was also fitted in March 2014.

Visits to the centre increased from 198,500 in 2013 to 330,000 in 2014. The number of members has also grown by 93%, from 1600 to 3100, since the works were completed. All these extra visits and members have been accommodated thanks to the extra space, new facilities and more comprehensive timetable.

"We're thrilled that more people in Brighton are keeping active and making the most of the first-rate facilities on offer here at Freedom Leisure," says Ross Phillipson, Freedom Leisure Centre Manager. "As a not-for-profit trust, reinvestment is one of our core principles. It just goes to show that by modernising facilities and creating a friendly, welcoming environment,

you can help improve the health and wellbeing of all sectors of the local community."

Withdean is one of six sports facilities in the city included in a Leisure Card scheme that entitles residents on low income to a 40% discount on selected activities, including gym memberships (or pay as you go), squash and tennis. The scheme was designed to make sport more accessible to all and has seen 1,400 residents sign-up since its launch in April 2013.

Chair of the economic development and culture committee Councillor Geoffrey Bowden adds: "The improvements at Withdean have made a huge difference to the experience residents can now enjoy at the centre and it's really encouraging to see these figures one year on. There's a truly impressive range of affordable activities for all members of the community so I hope we will continue to see numbers rise."

"The New Year is traditionally a time when we take stock and make resolutions for improving health and fitness and a visit to Withdean would be an ideal starting point for anyone looking to kickstart their healthy habits in 2015."

Withdean Sports Complex visits rise by 66% following £2.7 million refurbishment

The 11-year-old Springer Spaniel, owned by Hove resident David Ball, scooped first prize in Southern Water’s top dog competition which encouraged staff to submit a cute, funny or festive photo of their pooch.

David, a Senior Civil Engineer at Southern Water was rewarded with shopping vouchers after competition judges from UK charity, Canine Partners, favoured a festive picture of Dougie playing in the snow.

David said: “Dougie lives at home with me, my wife Larnie and our 23 month old daughter Emily. We homed him four years ago after a former colleague of mine emigrated to Australia and could no longer look after him. Dougie has a lovely relaxed temperament and is a joy to be around.”

The company’s metering team, who are working to install nearly 500,000 water meters across the South East, launched the competition to promote the Canine Partners charity.

Every year, the different departments in Southern Water choose a charity to support. Canine Partners has been selected by employees from the metering department for the past three years.

Canine Partners, which relies on donations, is dedicated to transforming the lives of people with physical disabilities by training dogs to help with everyday tasks that would otherwise be difficult, painful or impossible to carry out.

The tasks the dogs perform,

which include opening doors, pressing buttons and signaling for help in an emergency, provides their owners with confidence and the ability to lead an independent life.

Cat Harvey, Trust and Corporate Manager at Canine Partners, said: “We would like to thank all those who put forward their festive photos into the Top Dog competition.

“We are grateful to Southern Water Metering Team for choosing us as their charity and continuing to raise money so we can fund more assistance dogs through their training.”

Julie Carly, Communications Manager at Southern Water, said: “Since 2011, we have raised nearly £6,000 for this fantastic charity though dress down days, cake sales and annual events such as quiz nights.

“At Southern Water we are proud to support this charity which really helps change lives.”

The Martha Gunn pub in Upper Lewes Road, Brighton, has completed a fundamental facelift. It has been transformed by Regency Corporation, a local independent pub company. The transformation follows a £265,000 joint investment by Enterprise Inns and Regency, which has six other pubs in the area. The pub is named after Martha Gunn (1726-1815), a well-known Brighton "dipper", who operated bathing machines used by women bathers.

One Man, Two GuvnorsTheatre RoyalUntil Sunday, January 4This National Theatre production really is comedy theatre at its chaotic best: a marvellously energetic and engaging cast - featuring Gavin Spokes's tour de force as Francis Henshall, the eponymous bag-carrier for two shady characters - that captivates the audience and imbues it with a shared sense of joy and hilarity. For these reasons, it is definitely a seasonally-appropriate festivity.

In 1960s Brighton, an easily-confused Francis Henshall

becomes separately employed by two men - Roscoe Crabbe, a local gangster, and Stanley Stubbers, an upper-class criminal. Francis tries to keep the two from meeting, in order to avoid each of them learning that Francis is also working for someone else.

However, it turns out that Roscoe is really Rachel Crabbe in disguise, her twin brother Roscoe having been killed by her lover, who is none other than Stanley Stubbers.

The best places I eat

As the year draws to a close, it is the perfect opportunity to celebrate success across the city. The Places I Eat Brighton team have compiled a few of their favourite places to bring you our annual “Best of Brighton and Hove” list.

Best Coffee ShopEmporium 88 London Road, Brighton, BN1 4JFwww.emporiumbrighton.comA firm favourite with the Places I Eat Brighton team, namely due to its fantastic decor, killer coffee, and delectable range of cakes and bakes. Located in London Road and a prominent feature of the food revival in that area, Emporium continues to delight customers as a coffee shop, bar, and local theatre. Long may this interesting, quirky, and diverse caffeine haunt continue.

Best Street FoodToston Tolonwww.tostontolon.comToston Tolon are one of the best street-food vendors around, bringing a touch of Venezuelan magic to Brighton and Hove. One of the more popular stands at the weekly Street Diner market, Toston Tolon’s signature Apera - gluten-free cornmeal pattie, sweet plantain, slow-cooked black beans, cheddar cheese, and pulled pork or shredded chicken - is something that everyone should try at least once. Affordable, filling and downright delicious, Toston Tolon have impressed the Places I Eat Brighton team on many occasions.

Best Supper ClubCantinawww.cantinabrighton.wordpress.comI attended Tina Cantina’s Supper Club twice this year and both were prominent highlights in my food calendar. Serving a Middle-Eastern inspired menu that focuses on locally-sourced ingredients, Tina is the

complete home cook. Dishes include wild sea bass with orange, endive, black olives and a saffron aioli, and spiced duck bastilla. Deliciously fun and exceptionally tasty, Tina’s supper clubs are sending ripples of excitement not only across Sussex, but across the United Kingdom. Be sure to book in for 2015.

Best BreakfastJoe’s Café24 Upper Hamilton Road, Brighton, BN1 5DFwww.joescafebrighton.comIt’s been a pleasure watching Joe’s Café become one of Brighton’s best-loved breakfast haunts. With a focus on organic and Sussex produce, Dan and Jane Cooke have turned what was once a greasy spoon into a wonderful, welcoming cafe. The Bigger Breakfast is not to be missed, nor the Hashegeddeon - sausage, bacon, black pudding, mushroom, onion, tomato, and a side of beans, topped with two fried eggs, cheese and chives - from which 50p is donated to funding the community space Exeter St Hall in that area. A truly excellent and friendly cafe.

Best Ethical Food BusinessHisbe20 York Place, Brighton, BN1 4GUwww.hisbe.co.ukRecently celebrating their first birthday, Hisbe have solidified themselves on the Brighton and Hove food shopping map. Opened as a social enterprise by sisters Amy and Ruth Anslow, Hisbe - How It Should Be - aims to bring fairness to the way we shop and consume products. Working closely with famers across Sussex, Hisbe is able to bring affordability to the customer and a fairness to the producer. Focusing on healthy, sustainable, GM- and pesticide-free, high welfare, seasonal, minimally-packaged and responsibly-sourced products makes Hisbe the standout ethical food business of 2014.

Coffee Chroniclesby

The penny drops…support local shopsIt's time to make your New Year's resolution, Let's make it clear and avoid all confusion, It's not about you, but the things that you do, To make our world better, you are all the solution.

You might decide that you'll go on a diet, But that's kind of selfish, so you'd best keep it quiet, Maybe you'll fast, but that won't last, So it's probably best to not even try it.

Perhaps you'll decide that you'll kick the habit, Whether it's smoking, or drinking, or eating rabbit, Whichever you choose, you'll ultimately lose, Even if you have a really good stab at it.

The most productive thing you could possibly do, Is something for others and not just for you, Like making a promise, to support local business, Shop indie, shop local - to your city, stay true.

From retailers, coffee shops, and unsigned bands, To the Brighton Indie, which you hold in your hands, Boycott the chains, and support local trade, Let's all get together and make a stand.

Raise your latte, your cappuccino, or your cup of tea, And join together and say this with me, "The penny has dropped, I will support local shops, For today, for tomorrow and for all of 2015."

Pretty Good Thinking

A phenomenal success since its inception in 2006, Inika’s full natural makeup range is now available in more than 16 countries.

Founded by a dynamic woman who sought to avoid endocrine disruptors when she battled ill health, the story of how they came to be is as almost as exciting as the end products.

Miranda Bond may have run workshops on toxic-free living for a short time, but she now has a thriving beauty empire to keep her and Jenni Williams busier than ever.

At this time of year, when it is all kissy and glam around the mistletoe, you could do worse than sport a natural organic lip from a luxury organic cosmetics brand.

Their advanced botanical formulas are free from synthetic and chemical talcs, GM, fillers, PEGs, and parabens; Inika is also halal and cruelty-free. They incorporate mineral makeup and vegan and organic products that are completely free from synthetic or harmful ingredients.

With colours this good, you aren’t compromising on fashion either. I was dying to try the Ultimate Lip Tint called Cherish, which has a grapey colour. I had go on Candy, a delicate pinky pearl, but I keep going back to Cosmic for daywear. This is a sweet terracotta shade that is a bit pinkish. It doesn’t smear too much on your sherry glass and it isn’t too full on - so natural-looking more mature readers will approve.

Inika Ultimate Lip Tints are creamy balms. They are made with a hint of colour in candelilla wax (a vegan alternative to

beeswax), plus carnauba wax for moisturisation.

Hydrating Shea Butter, sunflower oil, and coconut soften and condition - while the organic peppermint peps you up with a hint of freshness (£15.50 from www.inikacosmetics.co.uk).

Inika Mineral Setting Powder lends an invisible matte dusting to keep everything where it should be and to maintain active shine control (£17).

I also tried the Mineral Blush Puff Pot in Rosy Glow, which is rather pretty (again at £17). The texture is soft and the lack of fillers means that the pigment is super-concentrated for a lasting, youthful glow.

The little shadow pots in Burnt Sienna and Copper Crush are also great (£14.50). You can use this as a regular shadow and layer it up - or add water using a fine liner brush to make a shimmering swirl to add some drama.

Inika is perfect for this time of year

The post-Sami Hyypiä era at the Amex gets underway today (Friday) with the visit of another team who have recently parted company with their manager.

Reading replaced Nigel Adkins with Steve Clarke earlier this month after an embarrassing 6-1 defeat at Birmingham City.

That the Royals acted earlier than Brighton despite, at the time, being seven points better off than the Seagulls caused grumbles of discontent among some sections of the Albion faithful who felt Hyypiä should have been shown the door earlier.

As it turned out, the former Liverpool defender took the decision out of the hands of the Brighton board by resigning in the aftermath of the hard-fought 1-1 draw with Wolves last weekend.

Nathan Jones, his assistant, will be in charge for today’s game with Tony Bloom et al no doubt working overtime to identity, interview and recruit a long-term replacement for the departed Finn.

Jones has worked closely with both Hyypiä and his predecessor, Oscar Garcia, and has occasionally fallen foul of criticism from the stands regarding his role - from people who, it has to be said, have presumably never seen him take a training session. He is, however, a highly-regarded coach and represents a relatively safe pair of hands to help see the Seagulls through to the New Year.

His team selection is going

to be difficult to second-guess and longer term the change in manager could breathe new life into the Albion careers of players like Kemy Agustien, Nzuzi Toko and Craig Mackail-Smith, who Jones has already recalled from his loan spell at Peterborough United.

Jones will, however, still have to negotiate the squad’s current over-reliance on loan players which has seen Hyypiä shuffle the pack on a weekly basis in order to keep all six loan players happy.

Only five can be selected for any given fixture and recently it has been a guessing game among fans as to who misses out.

Darren Bent, signed initially on month-long deal, has said this week he would happily remain at the Albion beyond the December

29 cut-off date for his current deal and will lead the line today hoping to add to his two goals.

That leaves Jones having to pick four from Joe Bennett, Elliott Bennett, Gary Gardner, Greg Halford and Joao Teixeira. If all are fit it will presumably be between Teixeira and Gardner as to who misses out, with the later having dropped to the bench for the draw at Wolves.

Gordon Greer is unlikely to play again until next month, meaning Lewis Dunk and Halford are likely to continue to play in central defence – with both impressing last time out.

Inigo Calderon will continue at right back with Bruno starting his suspension following the red card given for his ill-judged tackle at Molineux.

Match preview: Brighton and Hove Albion v Reading

I would like to thank the fans who have shown me their support during my time here. This is a wonderful club, and the fans are a big, big part of that.

"It's been frustrating for us all, and me more than anyone, but I think the support I have had from the Brighton fans has been tremendous. I am just very sorry I haven't been able to give them the results I hoped I could.

"I said recently the fans are the soul of any club, and that has never been more obvious than here at Brighton and Hove Albion. The fans have played a massive part in making the club what it is today.

“I am sorry things haven't worked out as we all wanted."

Íñigo Calderón has long been a firm favourite among Seagulls supporters for his off-the-field community work and committed displays on the pitch. Against Wolves last week, the rampaging right back showed again his attacking prowess, setting up Darren Bent’s goal with a tantalising cross. His leadership and infectious enthusiasm could prove key over the coming weeks.

I hope you have had a great Christmas and are now looking to get out in the fresh air and watch some football.

I do love a bit of Boxing Day action. Packed off to watch the game with some soggy turkey sandwiches and endless packets of crisps and chocolate. Mum wanted peace and quiet at home and dad wanted to get out of the house (and away from the relatives).

A wonderful tradition but it hasn't served up any real classics for the Albion over the last few years.

Last season ended in defeat in the quagmire at the Valley against Charlton, the year before, the Millwall game as moved forward, 2011 was a 3-0 loss to Reading at the Mad Stad.

This year it's the Royals again but this time at home. The performances at the Amex this season have certainly been disappointing overall. If the Seagulls are to ease any relegation fears in 2015 they will have to improve on their own territory.

The hostility from some fans towards the now former manager at the Millwall game was plain to hear. With such salubrious surroundings it is difficult to create a partisan atmosphere for visiting teams.

Last Saturday at Wolves Albion fans were moved to the side of the pitch. I have to say that it might be advantageous for travelling fans to be moved from behind

the South Stand goal. There are obviously some

safety issues but I do believe can help teams at the Amex, especially late in the game.

The Albion has one of the most progressive teams for interaction and engagement with fans and I am sure that they continue to assess what is best for the club.

However, no matter where the away supporters sit in the stadium, the Seagulls will have to keep them quiet as they head home in the five months after the turkey left-overs are binned if they are to stay in the Championship.

Usually at this time of year football club chairman are readying themselves and their cheque books for the notoriously busy January transfer window.

Tony Bloom and his Brighton and Hove Albion colleagues, however, have more immediate concerns: the Seagulls need a new manager.

Sami Hyypiä aside, the Albion chairman has a relatively successful track record in terms of picking a manager, although Oscar Garcia’s success will always be open to debate among fans who suggest he benefited from inheriting a strong squad put together by his predecessor Gus Poyet.

What is clear, though, is that Bloom’s next appointment could be the most important of his short time as chairman.

The Seagulls sit precariously in the Championship relegation zone and the prospect of dropping

a division is a nightmare scenario for a club which is used to large attendances and the financial boost they provide. Brighton’s squad, with a little fine-tuning and perhaps a change in tactics, is one which boasts more than enough talent to pull clear of the dreaded relegation zone. An over-reliance on loan signings remains a problem but Bloom’s funding of recent loan moves for Elliott Bennett and Darren Bent suggests the chairman is willing to fund squad improvements.

Hyypiä’s resignation, however, means the Albion are likely to head into another transfer window with a new manager who has not had much time to assess his squad and help shape any recruitment.

Whether or not the chance in manager will also result in a change in the club’s well-established off-the-field structure also remains to be seen.

Karl Robinson, MK Dons’ young manager, is believed to be high on the Albion’s most-wanted list. Reports in the press suggest

MK Dons have already been approached by Brighton and he would fit Bloom’s apparently preferred managerial profile as an emerging, well-regarded coach willing to work within a wider set-up.

That link, though, received a distinctly mixed reaction among supporters – with many suggesting the club should opt for an experienced safe pair of hands. Brian McDermott and Chris Hughton would fit that description.

Tony Pulis is another who has been linked to the job. Whether the former Crystal Palace manager would be willing to drop down a division when he would undoubtedly be among the favourites for lower level Premier League jobs once the top flight sackings begin remains to be seen.

Tim Sherwood is again being mentioned after he was heavily linked to the Seagulls in the summer, while Nigel Adkins and Uwe Rosler are also among the earlier favourites.

Hunt on to find Hyypiä replacement
