Chaos for commuters asconductor dispute rages on‘Virtually all’ direct railwayservices between Brightonand Southampton werecancelled this week, afteran ‘unusually high’ level ofsickness among conductors.

This had a knock-on effecton other Brighton services, and Southern said the chaoswas expected to last until thisevening (Friday).

This follows an RMTconductors’ strike onTuesday last week (April 26),which saw reduced trainservices to and from Brightonand Hove, and another strikeis planned on Friday, May 20.

The union is taking strikeaction over plans fromSouthern’s owners GoviaThameslink Railway (GTR)to replace all its conductorswith on-board supervisors –a new role with fewer safetyresponsibilities.

Dyan Crowther, chiefoperating officer of GTR,said on Tuesday: “We areextremely disappointedand frustrated that, due toan unusually high level ofsickness among some of ourconductors, we are unable torun the full service betweenSouthampton and Brighton.

“We know this will comeas an added blow after lastweek’s conductors’ strike bymembers of the RMT union.

“When our plans to evolvethe role of conductor areimplemented this type ofcancellation and disruptionto passengers will be vastlyreduced.”

Speaking about theupcoming strike, Mick Cash,RMT general secretary, said: “Southern GTR shouldbe under no illusions, theunion will not bend to theirbullying and threats and wewill be out there buildingon the huge public supportwe have already mobilised

in a campaign that pitchesthe demands for increasingprivate profits against safetyon our railways.

“Southern GTR fleecesits passengers for a fortunein fares for unreliable andovercrowded services andRMT will not allow safety tobe the next thing sacrificed inthe dash for fatter and fatterprofits on this rail franchise.”

A spokesman for Southernsaid: “This strike is totallyunnecessary. All we are doingis making our staff moreaccessible and more able togive better customer serviceto passengers on board ourtrains, by removing the needfor them to close the doors. This is how 40 per cent ofSouthern services operatealready.

“No one will be madecompulsorily redundant andno one will lose salary.”

Brighton Fringe kicks offtoday (Friday), with morethan 930 events over the nextmonth, at 170 venues acrossthe city.

We spoke to Fringedirector Julian Caddy on hishot tips for the festival, andwhy it’s growing year on year.

He said: “This year it isbigger than ever. There isa lot more confidence inBrighton Fringe than therehas ever been. We’ve had a 40per cent increase in pre-saletickets which is absolutelyunprecedented. It reallyhas made Brighton Fringe anational event rather than alocal or regional one.

“We have 75 shows from26 different countries. Thisweekend my hot tips areinternational shows. Thereis a show called El Blancho– Tales of the Mariachi. It isgoing to be a stand-out showin terms of international

quality. Really outrageousstory telling and lots oflaughs.”

Mr Caddy alsorecommended Huldebiet,a show which opened atAmsterdam Fringe.

He said: “It’s aboutexploring emotions. Whenyou should be feeling happybut you feel sad. It is quite aconfusing experience whichis very interesting to watch.

“They are two shows whichstand out for me.

“There is also someamazing cabaret and

circus, and a very strongtheatre programme with avenue coming down fromEdinburgh Fringe calledSweet Venue. That’s animportant development forBrighton Fringe; a venue thathas come from Edinburghand sees Brighton as animportant place to them aswell.”

More than 300 showsare shared by Edinburghand Brighton Fringe. Butdoes Brighton match upto its famous Scottishequivalent? Mr Caddy thinksso. He said: “There is such adiverse artistic communityin Brighton. I worked fornearly 20 years in Edinburghbefore this. The differenceis marked. Edinburghis largely an importedfestival. In Brighton mostof the producers are basedin Brighton. That is animportant difference.”

Naomi Alexander, parentand an organiser of thePreston Park event, said: “It’salready having a detrimentaleffect on the children. Wewant to support the teachers, the local schools, the localchildren, to say ‘enough isenough’ the SATs need to stopnow; not next year, not in afew years, now.”

Gareth Griffiths, parentof Alice, 10, and Reese, eight, said: “Alice is very stressedabout the SATs. It’s unsettlingto see. I just want there to bemore of a focus on creativityin the curriculum, and PE,because the kids miss it andthere’s definitely less of itnow.”

Robb Johnson, a formerteacher from Brighton, said:“I couldn’t stomach it anylonger, doing things that way.It was a job I cared a lot about, but the whole testing culture, reducing children to statistics,it isn’t something I couldparticipate in.”

City to be worst-hit in council house sell-offBrighton and Hove is to takea significant hit from thegovernment’s new housingpolicy, a report by homelesscharity Shelter has revealed.

The report said Brightonand Hove City Council wouldhave to sell off 108 of itscouncil houses a year, raising£28 million annually.

The policy is a result of thegovernment’s Housing andPlanning Bill which is goingthorough parliament, andwould force local authorities

to sell off a proportion oftheir council houses onthe open market once theybecome vacant. The moneywould then be used tofund discounts for housingassociation tenants taking upthe Right to Buy.

Brighton and Hove is set tobe one of the areas hardest hitby the move, with only MiltonKeynes and Southamptonworse off.

Cllr Anne Meadows, chairof housing and new homes

committee, said: “We willdo what we can to protectaffordable housing in the citythrough our joint venturewith Hyde housing. ButShelter are rightly concernedthat the government isseeking to fund its extendedRight to Buy policy throughlocal authorities – this willreduce our ability to tacklehousing problems in ourlocal areas.”

Shelter said the HousingBill means council homes

could be replaced bystarter homes (costingup to £250,000), and withonly one home replaced forevery eight sold through theexisting Right to Buy scheme,it’s likely that many won’t bereplaced at all.

The charity estimated thenew rules could force thesale of 23,500 council homesacross the country in justone year. Over two years thiswould be enough to house theentire population of Crawley.

Brighton Rocks: Creating anew democracy in the cityTwo Brighton and Hove MPswill speak at ‘Brighton Rocks!Power Sucks?’, a Fringe eventset to explore democracy inthe city and beyond.

Caroline Lucas, Green MPfor Brighton Pavilion, andPeter Kyle, Labour MP forHove, will join the event led byBrighton and Hove Compass– a group for progressives inthe city.

Billed as a ‘day of creativeengagement’, the event aimsto bring together a wide-range of people to ‘create anew democracy for Brightonand Hove’.

One of the topics on theagenda, is that communitiesoften feel excluded andignored when importantdecisions are made –but councils and otherauthorities argue that theydo make efforts to consultpeople.

Nick McMaster, one ofthe event organisers, said:

“A problem can be withconsultations themselves. They are often not so mucha creative conversation aboutthe issues and possibilities, but the presentation of aseries of pre-decided optionswhereyouhavetoagreetooneor the other. At other timescentralised governmenttakes the decision awayfrom even the councils, suchas the proposal to turn allschools into academies. Thisfurther disenfranchisescommunities.”

Other speakers at theevent will include: KatieGhose from the ElectoralReform Society; Dr AndrewBlick, author of ‘Beyond theMagna Carta’; Davy Jones, co-chair of Brighton and HoveGreen Party; Kate Bielbyand Pippa Goldfinger fromFrome Council in Devon, which has developed ideason how the people can beinvolved in planning anddecision making; and EmmaDaniel, lead councillor forcommunities on Brighton

and Hove City Council.Compass said the day will

be ‘about people engaging inconversation and developingideas about what we’d like tosee develop in our towns andcities especially in Brighton

The Brighton and HoveLiberal Democrats said itsresearch shows ‘the EUprovides prosperity andsecurity to local residentswhile protecting Brighton’senvironment’.

The group surveyedresidents in the city overtheir attitudes to theEuropean Union, ahead ofthe referendum in June.

Its report, entitled Europeis Working for Brightonand Hove, focuses on theopportunities offered toBrighton and Hove residentsthanks to the EU. It detailshow local schools and

universities benefit from EUfunding, how Brightoniansbenefit from living andworking in Europe, andhow the EU’s Erasmusprogramme providesopportunities for Universityof Sussex and University ofBrighton Students.

Using data gathered fromFreedom of Informationrequests, the LiberalDemocrat report givesexamples of how the EUsupports the city’s twouniversities. It said theUniversity of Brighton wasput in charge of a €7.88million science project

which placed it at the centreof a global network used by130 countries. And at theUniversity of Sussex, up to 20per cent of annual researchincome is provided by EUfunding, the report claims.

Hilary Ellis, of the Brightonand Hove Liberal Democrats, said: “This report providesexcellent, positive reasonswhy people should vote toremain in the EU.

The battle of theseafront poolsApproval of a new open-airswimming pool at Brightonseafront has sent ripplesthrough supporters ofSaltdean Lido.

Brighton and Hove CityCouncil gave the go-ahead forthe £4.5 million project ‘SeaLanes’ at Madeira Drive, at itspolicy and resources meetingon Thursday (April 28).

Saltdean Lido CICrepresentatives countered astatement by a council officerthat the development wouldbe ‘complementary’ and not‘competitive’ for their poolthree miles down the coast.

The Lido group alsorefuted claims that they had

been consulted on the plans.Rebecca Crook, Saltdean

Lido CIC director, said:“We were not consultedby Brighton and HoveCity Council or given anyinformation regarding theproposed plans for theoutdoor seafront pool whichis disappointing.”

She said Saltdean Lido is‘arguably the most iconicin the country’ – and theonly Grade II-listed – and itsopening in Easter 2017 will bea major boost for locals andtourism.

“It is a pity local volunteershave had to step in to save thislandmark when BrightonCouncil are the freeholders,”she said, referring to the £2.8million spent on refurbishingthe Saltdean landmark.

The Sea Lanes project isa joint initiative betweenBrighton-based design andarchitecture studio We LikeToday, Copsemill Properties,SwimTrek and Swimmergy.

The privately-fundeddevelopment would includethe 50m, eight-lane heatedpool, as well as a sauna, cafe, and shops, in brightly-coloured huts along MadeiraDrive.

Warren Morgan, leaderof the council, said: “I wouldvery much like to see someform of ticketing perhaps inthe future discussed wherethere could be a ticket thatworks in our swimmingpools, in the Lido, in the SeaLanes development, butobviously that’s a discussionfor the parties involved.”

Opinion

T he starting gun has goneoff in the EU referendumcampaign. Drawing supportfrom all political persuasionsand none, it is an honour tolead the official Vote Leave

campaign locally. With my campaign colleagues, we want

to bring a voice to those residents in thecity who find themselves disenfranchisedby a political establishment that has simplystopped listening to their concerns.

We’re told that if residents don’t vote toremain in the EU then the equivalent ofeconomic Armageddon will ensue for everyhousehold and small business.

Everything is under threat, it seems, from our Sussex wine growing industry tothe popular student Inter-rail card (despitethe fact this has nothing to do with ourmembership of the EU). Strange that thePrime Minister was telling us just a fewmonths ago that the UK would manageperfectly well outside the club if we decidedto leave.

As a successful small business owner thattrades internationally I can tell you that allthese scaremongering claims are completebunkum.

We should trust the British Chambersof Commerce on this one. They found thatthe cost of EU regulations on small businesswas in the order of £80 billion per annum.Over 95 per cent of businesses in Brightonand Hove do not trade with the EU. But allof them must comply with Brussels diktats, including complying with additional VATreporting rules. These are particularlyburdensome for our thriving digital firms.

Business will prosper in a post-EU Britainbecause we will take back control of ourability to do trade deals with the rest of theworld.

Most voters are probably not even awarethat we run a healthy trade surplus withnon-EU countries, whereas in the EU, thesecountries sell nearly £100 billion moregoods to us than we sell to them. In otherwords, the EU will not want to put up tariffbarriers once we leave because of the fact itwould be completely self-defeating for themto do so. Neither will we impose visa travelon our beloved continental neighbours -another example of ‘project fear’ put out bythe remain camp.

As a councillor, I have seen close hand thestultifying effect the EU has on our abilityto promote jobs and growth in the city. Only

recently your locally elected representativeswere obliged to pass into the council’scontracting rules the latest EU directiveon procurement thresholds for publictendering. In practice, this means thecouncil is largely prevented from awardingwork to local firms without first goingthrough an opaque and complex tenderingprocess, as happened with the new KingAlfred leisure centre.

Once again, this adds burdens and coststhat could be spent instead on our frontlinepublic services.

June 23 is a once-in-a-generationopportunity to tell the faceless bureaucratsin Brussels that enough is enough.

Why should our democratic wishes becontinually overridden by people thatwe have never heard of and who are notdirectly accountable to us for the decisionsthey make? As the father of bilingualchildren that celebrate a European heritagewith family relatives in Spain, Switzerlandand Sweden, I have no issues with the ideaof close ties with Europe. Indeed, we needto welcome and celebrate the people whohave come here to work hard, sustainingmany of the local services we rely on. It’svery important too that centuries of trading

and cultural links continue, as they willwhen we vote to leave the EU.

But what an increasing number of Britishpeople resent, and rightly, is the way anelite in Brussels seems to have no regardfor the sovereignty of our Parliament. SomeMPs were petitioned recently about thefact women’s sanitary products attract VAT.Instead of our lawmakers being able torespond, as they should, to a preposteroustax, campaigners were told that the EU wasin charge of these decisions.

This can’t go on. Remember, when youvote in the referendum on June 23, it’snot just about registering your views onthe European Union as it is today. You’reactually casting a ballot for the Britishpeople not yet born.

If you’re comfortable with our countrybeing dragged headlong into a Europeansuperstate – with a vision of culturalassimilation not too dissimilar to that ofthe former Yugoslavia – then vote remain. But if you care passionately about yourhard fought democratic freedoms, thesovereignty of the British Parliament, then vote to leave this failing politicalexperiment. Only you can send thatmessage loud and clear.

He said: “Faces of Brightonbegan as a personal projectat the beginning of 2015. Iwanted to take portraits of ahandful of people from in andaround Brighton who helpmake the city the unique placeit is.

“There’s a lot of spontaneityabout these images, althoughI carefully chose the locationof each particular portrait,

based on who exactly I wasphotographing.

“Most of the photo shootshad to be set up and shot injust a few minutes so any pre-planned ideas often weren’tpossible; I just worked withwhatever the situation andlocation offered.”

OpinionNo consultationon NHS planCouncillor Daniel Yates, Chairof the health and wellbeingboard is right to complainabout the lack of consultationin the new Sustainability andTransformation Plan which isbeing drawn up for the NHSin Sussex and East Surrey.

But while this response iswelcome it is inadequate inaddressing the real issueswhich now face people livingin this area using the NHS.

The Sustainability andTransformation Plan (STP)for this area is one of 44 STPregions across NHS England. Our region will have to payoff the £37 million deficitrecently announced by ourlocal hospital trust togetherwith our local portion of the£25 billion in cuts to the NHSby 2020.

All of this will be taken intoaccount and will be deductedfrom the total NHS Englandallocates to our region. Onewonders if we will get anymoney for NHS services atthis rate.

These detailed plans arealready in train as they haveto be submitted to NHSEngland by June this year.

New models of care arebeing imposed althoughin many cases they are

unproven clinically andorganisationally.

The impact on staffinglevels and the ability to delivereffective services to patientsis of huge concern.

While the public havenot been consulted, neitherhave the professionalsdelivering the NHS servicesand Parliament itself has notgiven approval.

On top of all this, thecomposition of the STPboards will include privatehealthcare providers andconsultants, thus ensuringthat the profit motive willbe well represented in thedecision making process.

Ice rink hopefor the cityI was very pleased to read thatthe leader of Brighton andHove City Council, Mr WarrenMorgan, suggested that anew stand-alone stadiumfor ice sports was a distinctpossibility for our city.

Every Christmas the lawnon the Pavilion Grounds istaken over by an ice area andhundreds of skaters havemade use of this facility every

year.This leads me to the

conclusion that if we had anindoor ice rink this would beheavily supported throughoutthe year.

It is interesting that icehockey in North America hasexpanded in the last 40 yearsand there are now 30 teams inthe National Hockey League, each of their stadia being ableto house in average 20,000spectators in high classindoor facilities.

To enable these stadiumsto be built large corporationshave put vast sums of moneyto build such and the newestof these arenas, the BarclaysCentre in Brooklyn, New York, the new home of the NewYork Islanders. While there isno way we could have indoorstadia for such numbers, theexperience of having RugbyUnion at the Amex Stadium inwhich there were full housesfor the two World Cup gamesand 12,000 for the under-21international, suggests thata ‘non-Rugby Union County’could house such crowdssuggest that a 5,000 capacityindoor area would meet theneeds of our great city.

In the 1950s and 1960s theBrighton Tigers ice hockeyteam were amongst the bestteams in Great Britain andevery Sunday, home gamecapacity crowds of 2,800

@BrightonIndycrammed in he S.S. Brightonat the bottom of West Street. If we were to re-invent theTigers again I am convincedlarge crowds would attendtheir fixtures.

There is a lot of space inthe ‘Black Rock’ complex anda stadium there could proveideal and with consultationwith the local bus companyservices could be providedeast, west, and north of thecomplex.

After all the consultationand setting up services forThe Albion at the Amex haveproved successful and thereis no reason why the samecouldn’t apply at Black Rock.

Since 2000 Brighton andHove has moved forward as asports hub and with SussexCounty Cricket Club andBrighton and Hove Albionbeing major names in Britishsporting awareness we couldbecome the major sportinghub on the South Coast with anew indoor arena.

With new technologyand modern planning newstadiums can ‘change’ forother sports ie tennis, boxing, basketball, table tennis, snooker and athletics.

However the mostimportant thing for this newstadium would be for childrento be able to learn to skate andthis facility when not beingused for ‘major’ events could

be hired out to clubs andschools. This really could beour jewel in the city’s crown. Ihope some major companiesread this letter and take onboard the sponsorship of ‘ournew stadium’.

I therefore look forward tothe day the first brick is putin place.

Hove Librarydelay welcomeCouncillor Bewick is wrongwhen he says that residentswon’t take kindly to theConservatives delaying theclosure of Hove Library. I’veyet to meet anyone who’s notpleased.

If the council has had todelay the decision due toinadequate information, how can ‘popular’ support beclaimed from the rest of us,as we have been more poorlyinformed than they?

What we don’t take kindlyto is the false impressionthat Hove library must goor (seven other libraries)because there’s suddenly aninsistence to replace an outof sight concrete roof withexpensive slate.

I t’s a year since I was elected asMP for Hove and Portslade andit’s really flown by. It’s been anincredible honour to represent youin Parliament. In that time, I’vemet so many residents, seen many

fantastic and innovative local businessesand charities as well as visited our excellentlocal schools.

Right from day one, I’ve sought to putpolitics back in the heart of our community. My office on Church Road is there to makeit much easier for people to come in and seeme. And over 2,600 residents have been into express a view, meet me or ask for help.I love the fact that so many people get intouch over the issues which matter to them.

I’ve used my role in Parliament tochampion the issues which have come upon the doorstep across Hove and Portslade.

That’s why I was so pleased to beelected to the Business Select Committee, providing me the opportunity tochampion the self-employed and smallbusinesses which both play a vital rolein the local economy. I’ve also had thechance to grill ministers on major policyissues like creating enough high qualityapprenticeships for young people.

In my maiden speech to Parliament, Ispoke of the importance of second chancesin the education system, having goneback to school myself aged 25 to get thequalifications I missed out the first timearound.

That’s why I was so pleased to bebecome chair of Parliament’s cross-partyFurther Education Group, giving me theopportunity to highlight how important

colleges are and the need to offer people asecond chance for to get qualifications.

Obviously the biggest disappointmentI’ve had over the past year is the reality ofthe Conservatives winning the last election. That has allowed them to continue withtheir chaotic and ill-thought policieswhich are wreaking havoc with our publicservices.

It further underlines to me the absolute

necessity of reaching out to those whodidn’t vote Labour last year to give us thebest chance of winning the next election.

Over the next year, I’ll continue workinghard on issues that matter to you likeimproving rail services, standing up forour NHS and supporting the building ofmore affordable homes locally. If you thinkthere’s an issue I should be championing, please let me know.

W hile many welcomedthe news in my columnlast week about abillion pounds ofinvestment comingin to the seafront

and elsewhere, in response many begancomments with “what about…”.

While these huge projects are vital interms of providing new facilities, newinfrastructure, new jobs, new homes andnew funding for our essential councilservices, it isn’t the only thing we arefocussed on.

On the first anniversary of taking office,my Labour administration will set out anambitious programme of work for oursecond year, building on the foundations ofthe past 12 months.

We will press ahead with our New Homesfor Neighbourhoods project, with 250 of thefirst 500 new council homes either finishedor on the way.

We will launch our Living Wage Housingventure to provide over a thousandaffordable rented homes at 60 per centof market rates, within reach of the keyworkers our city needs.

Our Fairness Commission will report

next month on how we should make thecity a better and fairer place to live, howwe can work together as communities andneighbourhoods to tackle poverty andinequality.

As council funding is cut, we will lead

the way in bringing people and partnerstogether to harness the people power wehave in our city, working to ensure thatactions of government don’t necessarilymean decline and decay.

We are making changes in the council so

that our services are easier to access online, that you get the response you need and theinformation you want, that processes likeplanning work better and that the measureswe have introduced to make the streetscleaner continue to have an effect.

We will make sure that a future for ourRoyal Pavilion, our museums and ourlibraries is secured.

We will continue to work on our strategyand actions to tackle rough sleeping, reduceyouth unemployment, improve the travellersituation, get our city’s transport networkworking in a joined-up way, and make sureall children have access to excellent schoolswhere parents have a say.

The list of jobs to tackle is huge, and isadded to every day by residents who contactme. It will be challenging to deal with it allgiven that we will have hundreds of millionsof pounds less to do it with than we hadbefore.

It is easy to say it can’t be done, thatnothing changes and that things are gettingworse. It is hard to roll up your sleeves andpitch in. We must not give in to those whosay that Brighton and Hove’s best days arebehind us. They are not. Together we canmake a difference.

The ‘Let Kids Be Kids’ protest in Preston Park this week

AlexPhillips

Our children mustlearn more than one

exam technique

Deputy convenor of theGreen Group

T his week saw hundreds ofparents and children inthe city join a nationwideprotest against tougherexams for six and seven-year-olds.

Labour councillor Tom Bewick wasquick to reprimand parents seeking toskip school to join the rally in PrestonPark.

While I share the councillor’s viewthat we don’t want to see kids takenout of school where it may harm theireducation, focusing on the single missedschool day seems to spectacularly missthe point.

I truly empathise with parents on thisissue. These new tests are just one partof a whole-scale government agenda toturn our schools into nothing more thanconveyor-belt exam factories, sponsoredby the private sector with a single goal, toget our young people into work.

We have been moving closer to aone-dimensional education system forthe last few decades. Yet most parents, teachers and young people know it hasgone too far when six and seven-year-oldchildren are increasingly burdened withexam stress.

We know that this is a terribleapproach to learning. The experts in ouryoung people’s learning are the teachers, and according to the NUT, 86 per cent ofprimary school teachers oppose thesetougher SAT tests.

The stress of continuous testing is alsodamaging to the health and wellbeing ofour young people. In Brighton and Hove, council figures show that self-harmingby young people in the city has increasedby 40 per cent between 2010 and 2013,with headteachers reporting that theemotional and mental health of pupils is

an ‘increasing concern’ .Yet somehow, in the face of increasing

criticism and mounting evidence, the government has become moredetermined to push its warped view ofwhat education should look like upon us.

Latest proposals will see schoolsremoved from local authority andparental influence by forcing them allto become academies, and abolishingparent governors.

That’s why the protests this week wereencouraging. They show that parents, teachers and young people are willingto fight for a better system, with betteroutcomes and experiences for ourchildren.

Greens advocate a wholescalereform of the education system whichprioritises local accountability andfocuses on holistic learning to teach ouryoung people how to live well, to activelyparticipate in their community and tocare about their fellow citizens.

I firmly believe in the value of diversityin our education system. One part of thisis to create an environment where kidsfrom a range of different backgroundscan mix and form friendships. Hand-in-hand with this goes diversity of contentand experience – meaningful learningof life skills like sex and relationshipseducation, and political engagement, aswell as teaching of sports, languages andmusic.

The evidence is on our side on this.We cannot continue to burden ouryoung children and destroy any passionor excitement for learning, particularlyamong children who may not excelin an exam environment. We need asystem that nurtures the value of everychild and, in the words of the recentcampaigners, ‘let kids be kids’.

The Wolf Borderby Sarah Hall

The BookDoctorwith Laura Lockington @bookloversupper

OK, I put my hands up, I dohave a thing a bit about wolves. They are the most magnificentcreatures and much maligned. When I see a book about them,I usually grab it and devour it.This was no exception.

It’s a fascinating tale, about avery wealthy landowner that hasa dream of releasing a pair of wolves onto his land onthe borders between England and Scotland.

He poaches Rachel, a wolf behavioural expert, who is working on a reservation on Canada, tempting her home to her original roots where hermother is dying. Rachel is torn between admiringhis aims, and yet despising his wealth and hisprivilege.

But it’s the wolves themselves that are the starsof his book. Their stealth and intelligence shinesout and from the very beginning they are the mostintriguing and beguiling of animals.

Of course, there is an uproar in the press andby the local people who are convinced that themassive steel fence that keep the wolves in won’t beenough – and indeed it can hardly be described asan enclosure – as it covers acres and acres of land. There is a wonderful twist in this book towards theend that had me racing to finish this story.

But the thing that stayed with me long after I’dfinished the book was the wonderful, breath takingcreatures that are still being hunted and maimedand trapped. Shame on us.

Opinion

The people of Brighton Pavilion voted inthe UK’s first Green MP.

Caroline Lucas polled 1,250 votes morethan Labour and said of the historicvictory; “After the recession, after people’sfaith in politics has been trampled intothe mud after the expenses scandal, it wasnot the best time to ask people to take a

risk and put their faith in politics, but thatis what the people of Brighton Pavilionhave done.”

Caroline was born in Malvern,Worcestershire, in 1960, to Conservative-voting parents, attended Malvern Girls’College before graduating from theUniversity of Exeter with a first-class BA(Hons) in English Literature.

She was active in the early 1980s

peace camps at Greenham Common andMolesworth, where NATO decided tohouse 64 cruise missiles.

Unlike Greenham – famously occupiedby women only – Molesworth was alsohome to male protestors. One aim of theoccupation was to goad the Conservativegovernment by claiming the fence couldbe dismantled faster at night than itcould be erected by day, and provoke an

overreaction by the Ministry of Defence, gaining publicity for the anti-nuclearcause.

A member of CND, the Campaign forNuclear Disarmament, she was heavilyinvolved in the Snowball Campaignagainst US military bases in the UK.

Ostrum, (aka Odette Toilette)includes one hundred storiesabout the key perfume housesof the last century. It perfectlyevokes the very personal waysthat fragrance plays a part inmemory.

A Century of Scents is anirreverently social read throughgirlhood to good taste and flagsmost of the brands we have loved(and loathed!) in between.

When appearing live, ‘Odette’speaks wittily on fragrant topicsfrom perfume’s place in historyto the scent of space. I hope wecan lure her to our ozone coastsoon. H e was the Welsh boy fromthe valleys who got intoBalliol College, Oxford, andwho subsequently deployedhis brilliant intellect,Cambrian charm, and rock-

star looks, to become one of the world’sbiggest drug dealers.

At the height of his activities, HowardMarks had 43 aliases, each with its ownpassport, 89 phone lines, and owned 25money-laundering companies.

He used to smuggle cannabis by the ton, enabling him to fly on Concorde and eatcaviar omelettes for breakfast.

Already at Oxford he was a majorsupplier. I remember in my second yeargoing to visit one of my fellow Englishstudents, Humph, and following my noseto his digs in Wellington Square. Inside, the air was as thick as a Chinese fumerie, people were comatose on the floor, theBeatles’ Strawberry Fields LP was blastingaway, and Humph was perched blank-eyed like some psychedelic Buddha. Nosurprise to find Humph mentioned onpage 56 of Marks’s bestselling memoirs,Mr Nice (1997). Now I know where thestuff came from. Another friend, Chris,

inherited the unauthorised digs in ParadiseSquare that Marks describes (page 47). Andanother, the author Philip Pullman, spenthis final year in the Garsington cottagethat Marks in turn took over (page 57). Iquote Pullman’s August 1968 letter to me:“People who took cottage gave me hashishto smoke and it gave me a rubber face. Ohyes! and mild euphoria. But my face was

infinitely expandable and distortable. Butso euphoric I couldn’t even laugh.”

In 1969 Marks and his Latvian first wifeIlse Kadegis moved from Garsington toBrighton. Through the poet ChristopherLogue they found a cheap seafront flat, andspent time with Logue and Johnny Martin,an anthropologist at the newly openedSussex University: “We all had similarinterests: marijuana, LSD, rock music, andafter-eight philosophy”. Marks also playedGo with a brilliant mathematician, RichardLewis, “who had a beautiful wife, Rosie.I couldn’t take my eyes off her.” Maritalmusical chairs began.

While Ilse taught at a convent school inWorthing, Marks nominally studied for aBPhil at Sussex, supposedly “Balliol by thesea”. But he hated the place. “Every roomhad a number rather than a name. Therewas no romance about studying in anoffice-block library. One couldn’t lie backand think this was where, in the past, greatminds produced great ideas.” Nor did heget on with his supervisor, a Polish logiciancalled Jerzy Giedymin. He didn’t completethe course, nor did his marriage – any morethan Johnny Martin’s or Richard Lewis’s –survive.

Marks enjoyed Brighton, however, and ashis drug-dealing in London prospered (hewas soon earning £7,500 per week) he andRosie rented a ground-floor flat at 14, LewesCrescent for weekends.

There is mention of the Weavers,“Brighton’s best-known criminal family”,and of “Nicky” Hoogstraten. Marks’s secondwife, Judy, was the sister of a Brightonfriend of Rosie’s.

The next time Brighton is mentioned, the year is 1982, Marks has just come out ofWandsworth Prison after serving two years, and Judy drives him home to Brighton. (Oneof the book’s illustrations shows the familyon Brighton seafront at this date.) Judy begshim not to return to dealing: “I couldn’tstand another two years on my own.”

He promises. But the book is only halfwritten. All those aliases, phone lines andcompanies – and a seven-year stint at TerreHaute Penitentiary, Indiana – are still tocome.

“Britain’s favourite bad boy”, whosegiddying adventures are colourfullyrecounted, died last month at the ripe age– for someone who smoked 20 joints a day,and had run-ins with the IRA, the CIA, theMafia, and Colombian traffickers – of 70.

Howard Marks and a few refreshing drinks.

Tucked away on Brighton’sMarket Street you’ll find newshoe retailers Rieker. Theshop’s bold white and redfrontage creates a good impacton approach, with their neatwindow displays workinghard to tempt you inside.

I was first uncertain aboutwhether Rieker would beable to offer a shoe style to myliking. The company pridesitself on creating shoes forcomfort, and sensible shoesaren’t usually my thing...surely style and fashionwould be compromised in a‘comfortable’ shoe, I thought? How wrong I was.

A spring in my step, thanks to Rieker shoesProviding various styles

for both men and women, the Brighton store is provingpopular with all ages. Sandals, walking shoes, boots and workshoes adorn the displays, witha great selection of bags andaccessories to match mostshoe styles too.

As the company’s websitestates, Rieker shoes and bootsare not merely decorative, fashionable, products; theirfunctional features mean theyoffer much more than that.

Every shoe incorporatesa special construction andutilises lightweight andelastic components to achievetheir special anti-stressbenefits. Features include:Minimum weight; optimum

shock absorption on varyingsurfaces; and maximum re-flexibility.

The knowledgeable andattentive in-store team ismanaged by Clare, who hasbeen running the show sincethe store opened at the end ofFebruary.

Tempted by the idea of amore comfortable work shoe,it was a pair of smart broguesthat first caught my eye. Assoon as I tried them on Iknew they were a shoe fit forrushing around the city.

With summer around thecorner, it was no surprisethat a second pair of navycanvas wedges caught my eyetoo. Once again style was notcompromised by comfort and

Navy canvas wedges from Rieker

I especially liked the handyclip fastening meaning thatI did not have to repeatedlyundo the buckle to get themon and off.

The company boast thatthe performance of its shoesis not only measured by howfast you run or how high youjump but how good you feelin everyday life, so I’m lookingforward to feeling the resultsfrom Rieker.

Now, if you can design a pairof stilettos that don’t kill yourfeet after a night of dancing,I’d be very grateful...

Until the end of the monthRieker on Brighton’s MarketStreet is offering five per centoff of one pair of shoes, and 10per cent off of two.

Brighton Digital Festival isthe UK’s largest celebration ofdigital arts and culture takingplace throughout September. We spoke to Jon Pratty, chairof the festival, about how it allbegan.

Tell us about your approachto leadership?Leadership in the arts andculture world is a sensitivesubject for many. More andmore digitally-adept peopleare climbing into leadershippositions. This is a great thingbecause there are still plentyof dinosaurs managing ourmuseums and galleries. Inthe arts very low wages arenormal, and we also haveplenty of big egos in leadershippositions who micro-manage.Ironically, outside of the artsgood management practice, rather than leadership skills,is held in high regard. And thatfor me is where leadershipbegins. It’s key to productivityto keep the people-side of anybusiness working smoothly. That means thinking – allof the time – about howyou find new talent, howyou promote talent givingresponsibility where it’s due,and how you encourage careerdevelopment.

What inspired you to set upBrighton Digital Festival? Some Arts Council funding forthe south east was unspent, and I saw Gateshead DigitalSummer being promoted in2010. This got me thinkingabout extending a digital arts

season around the big creativeindustry conferences likedConstruct and Flash on TheBeach. I took the idea to ourArts Council, who liked it,then went and talked to peoplelike Honor Harger, (director ofLighthouse Arts, at the time)and Andy Budd from Clearleft. The inspiration has alwaysbeen to mix up the digital artsand creative industries in thecity, like binary stars, orbitingaround each other.

Is Brighton a good place tofacilitate creative projects?Come along to a BDF meetingor one of our regular monthlymeet ups. You’ll be amazedat the way all kinds of peoplecome together and hatchideas. Brighton is a great placefor creativity. Way back in the1980s, Ned Hoskins and hisfriends set up the Artists OpenHouses scheme. Fast forwardto the 2010 and Donna Closewas running the amazingWhite Nights festival in thecity. There’s creativity here –you’ll find it overflowing out ofevery venue in the city duringBDF 2016.

ABOUTSummer and autumn is theseason for fresh figs.

The fig tree is one of theworld’s oldest trees and canbe traced back to the earlyhistorical documents alsofeaturing prominently in theBible.

Figs are native to the MiddleEast and Mediterranean andwere held in such high regardby the Greeks even created lawsto prevent their export.

There are many differentvarieties of fig, with a richvariety of colours and texture.

Figs have a unique, sweettaste with a soft chewy textureand filled with crunchy, edibleseeds. Fresh figs don’t lastlong being very delicate, beingeaten within one or two days ofpurchase also don’t wash untilyou want to eat them. Ripe figshave a sweet scent. Choose figsthat are plump and tender witha rich colour and no bruising.

Figs can be consumed eitherpeeled or unpeeled, dependingon the thickness of the skin aswell as personal preference.Since the insides of ripe figs arerather soft and sticky they canbe difficult to chop.

The best way to preservethem is by drying. Dried figswill keep for much longer.

Producing a sweet, highlynutritious dried fruit that canbe eaten all year round.

Dried figs will keep for muchlonger. However it is importantwhen buying dried figs to makesure they are soft and mouldfree and keep them in a cool, dark place.

HEALTHFigs are a great source ofnatural sugars, mineralsincluding potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper and ironalso vitamins A, E, and K andsoluble fibre.

The fig is recommended tonourish and tone the intestinesacting as a laxative due to itshigh fibre content. Becausewe have large amounts ofsodium in our diets, this createsimbalance and fresh figs canhelp increase potassium andthereby help to lower bloodpressure. The high fibre canalso help with weight loss byreducing hunger. Figs alsohelp good bacteria in the gutaiding digestion. The highcalcium content can help withosteoporosis.

A 100g serving of freshfigs provides approximately:1.3 g protein, 0.3g fat, 20.3gcarbohydrate, 2.2g fibre, 80calories .

A 100g serving of driedfigs provides approximately:3.3g protein, 0.9g fat, 69gcarbohydrate, 5.6g fibre, 249calories.

Because figs have a laxativeeffect it is advised not to overeat them.

The astoundingbeauty of KingLear’s languageSo is there an expectationthat actors of a certaindistinction will reach thepoint where tackling Learseems absolutely inevitable?

Michael Pennington, who takes on the role atthe Theatre Royal Brightonuntil Saturday, May 7,answers with a laugh…and a reference to RalphRichardson.

“I always think of RalphRichardson who used to saythat you are going along andeverything is fine and the sunis shining and then suddenlyyou get your foot caught inLear! Well, it is now my timewith that particular bramblecalled Lear.

“I never used to thinkabout playing Lear. Isupposed I would get to do itone day, but I wasn’t sure thatI had anything particular tooffer in the role.”

But then a few years ago,he was doing the RonaldHarwood play Collaborationin Chichester’s MinervaTheatre, and there wassomething about hischaracter that set himthinking about Lear moreseriously.

As Michael says, withLear, you have to accept thatthere is only a fairly narrowwindow in an actor’s career– that moment when you areroughly the right age but canstill match memory with theenergy the role requires.

“And you start to realisethat if you miss that moment, then you have missed itforever.”

This is in fact Michael’ssecond Lear. His first wastwo years ago in New York:“It was a completely differentproduction, and everythingabout it was different to theextent that I am the onlypoint of contact betweenthe two. I tried to import theAmerican production, butit was too expensive and toodifficult, so I rememberedmy old days as an actor-manager and decided to tryto set up a new productionover here. We have comeup with a really interestingco-production betweena subsidised theatre inNorthampton and thecorporate sector. It has been

fascinating to do.“The American production

was not instigated by me.I wanted to work with theresident director that thecompany uses, and I alsowanted to work with thecompany. I was there as anovelty. They didn’t reallyknow who I was. But havingdone Lear in New York, Iwanted to do it in my owncountry.”

Michael came to it allhaving appeared as Edgarin 1976 opposite DonaldSinden’s Lear: “But the playat first sight can appear quiteremote, like some mountaincovered in mist, but once youget into it, you realise justhow marvellous the languageis, just how astoundinglybeautiful it all is.”

As for Lear himself: “Ithink he is terrific. Hisdefault mode is to fight back.He doesn’t do self-pity. Hefights and fights and fights. His huge mistake is at the

beginning of the play, butreally the key thing is whatwe now call dementia. There is no question thatmost of us have experiencedsomeone who comes andgoes mentally as Lear does.Sometimes he is brilliantlyclear, and sometimes he isaway with the fairies.

“To make his daughtersgo through the love testthat he puts them throughand making them declaretheir love for him is at thebeginning of his dementia.Everything would be fine ifhe didn’t do that, and he thendeals with it in a very stupidand unrealistic way.”

And therein lies thecontinuing relevance of theplay, as Michael argues. Wedon’t have to think of himas a remote ancient Briton. He could be the CEO of a bigcompany: “It could be anyfigure of authority.”

Spicy chicken pasilla

Frijoles are a must try

Food and DrinkUp there with the best fastfood restaurants on offer

by Tom Flint

W ahaca is the latest ofthe UK’s big playersto open in Brightonand it has done soon the back of awave of expectation.

Headed up by 2005 Masterchef winnerThomasina Miers, the Mexican ‘marketfood inspired’ restaurants have been ahit in London since 2007. The Brightonbranch is the fifth to open outside ofthe capital and, unlike other restaurantchains, has the sort of credentials thatfit in well with Brighton’s cultural ethos.

Ever since the flagship restaurantopened in Covent Garden, Wahacahas put sustainability at the centre ofits business. It is the first restaurantgroup in the UK to have been certifiedas carbon neutral, and won theSustainable Restaurant Group of theYear award in both 2012 and 2013.As with any restaurant worth its saltthese days all produce is from local andsustainable suppliers where possibleand sustainability is built in to all of therestaurants.

This is all rather impressive but atthe end of the day if the food isn’t anygood then what is the point? So let’s geton with the important stuff, is Wahacaactually any good? The short answer isyes. My friend and I walked in at 6pmon a very average Wednesday eveningand the place was pretty much full. Amember of the team they said it hasbeen like that since opening.

Despite being so busy it had anenergetic buzz to it rather than feelingoppressive and annoying. The staff werefriendly and attentive, zipping throughthe tables with, what appeared to be,happy smiles on their faces and theanimated kitchen added to the marketfeel of the restaurant. The generalenvironment is lively and bright withoutcoming across as tacky and like it is

trying too hard.We take our seat and are immediately

struggling with the extensive andinteresting menu. I order a ratherdelicious tamarind Margarita (£6.95) toassist with the selection process and wesettle on some nibbles to start. We orderguacamole served with Chicharron-style puffed pork scratchings (£4.75) andchorizo topped Frijoles (£4.50) whicharrive promptly.

The guacamole is zingy and freshwith lime and the rich and perfectlyripe avocado is spot on. The puffedscratchings are surprisingly good andgo well with the fresh dip. The frijoles– which are a traditional twice cookedbean dish – are excellent. Deep and richin flavour I cannot get enough of themand the chorizo oil adds a little heat andpaprika sweetness – definitely a musttry dish.

For the mains you can either choosea selection of small dishes from the“Street Food” menu or go for one of thelarger main dishes. My friend plucks forthe street food menu choosing a chipotlechicken quesadilla (£4.25), Mexico City-style Salmon Sashimi tostadas (£4.75),and Huitlacoche empanadas (£4.50).

I opt for one of the larger plates andorder pasilla chicken tacos (£9.50) fromthe classics list.

My friend’s dishes all arrive firstwhich is a little annoying, although theyhad informed us that as food is cookedto order this can be the case.

The quesadilla is fairly standardwith a sweet and slightly fruity chickenfilling. The other two dishes are a littlemore interesting especially the salmontoastadas which combine classicMexican flavours with an underlyingnote of raw salmon – it tastes better thanthat probably sounds. The empanadasare little parcels of earthy mushroomswith cheese and a slight trufflesweetness that adds a little luxury to atraditional concept.

My main dish consists of three softflour tortillas filled with grilled chickenthat has been marinated with Oaxacanchillies. I am surprised, and pleased, with the level of heat in the dish and thechicken has a lovely fresh and smokeycharred flavour. The burnt habanerosalsa adds further spice and depth toan already pleasurable experience. I trythe fruity habanero sauce that is on thetable with one and is a great additionand before I know it I’ve eaten the lot.

Wahaca is a good quality fast foodoption in the city that works equally wellfor families and groups of friends on anight out.

It is not going to become one of thecity’s top restaurants but for a quick andtasty food option it certainly ticks a lotof boxes – although you might have towait for a table at the moment due to theinitial rush.

Compared to similar large scalerestaurants I would say the food is upthere with the best and the prices arevery reasonable. I would certainly haveno reservations about returning if I waslooking for a simple no fuss place to eat.

R ice cakes are really popular. No, like really popular. No,more popular than that.We were blissfully unawareof the unprecedentedpopularity of rice cakes

until this week’s perfunctory researchbegan. We were happy in our ignorance. Now we know stuff and, as your oracleon anything cakey, we’re obviously goingto spread the word about this rice cakephenomenon. Wave goodbye to yourignorance (and bliss), and say helloto knowing stuff. It’s not all that, butwelcome to the club.

When we say rice cakes, we’re nottalking about caramel flavoured Snack AJacks, or dark chocolate coated Kallo fromthe free-from aisles in Tesco; we’re talkingabout proper, complicated, Pan-Asiandelicacies. That’s proper and complicated, not “proper complicated”. You get me,fam? Sick.

Proper and complicated rice cakes aremade by pounding rice into a paste andmoulding it into shapes. Not rice likeUncle Ben’s Express Golden VegetableRice. That’s probably lovely, but we’llnever know, and nor should you.Seriously, don’t eat that. The rice is shortgrain japonica glutinous rice. Glutinousin the sense that it’s sticky like glue, notglutinous as in chock-a-block with gluten.Good news for the omnipresent one percent.

In China they have three varieties - niangao, tang yuan and erkuali. The latterliterally means earpiece. Not relevant, but it is interesting. In Taiwan they steamthem and call them Tainan, which is thename of a city in the south. The Koreanshave over seven varieties. Our favourite isTteokbokki because it arouses the samesense of pride as being an eight year oldwho is able to correctly spell recommend.Indonesia, India, and the Philippineshave over 20 varieties between them, andthe Vietnamese have loads but the editorwouldn’t appreciate spell-checking themyriad accents. Japan has Senbei andalso – drum roll – Mochi.

You know that dessert in Japaneserestaurants that nobody knows thename of, but even when they do, theydon’t actually say it lest they sound likean idiot? It’s those furry little balls thatfeel like really soft skin and are usually apinky red colour. They’re called Mochi, and they are the reason for all this. Allwe wanted to do was find out a bit moreabout them, but once the floodgatesopened, rice cake mania was ushered inby a golden beckoning-cat.

The best samurai in town couldn’t fightoff the facts. And nor could Tom Cruise. How did he ever get cast in a samuraifilm? Do you want to know why? Do youwant the truth? You can’t handle thetruth.

ROAD TEST: HONDA HR-V 1.6I-DTEC EX

by Alan CandyMotoring writer

Honda have turned back theclock and set the HR-V for thepresent in a bid to capturetheir slice of the compact SUVpie.

The name may be familiar forthose who recall the so-called‘Joy Machine’ of the early2000s – a quirky and funkycross-country leisure vehi-cle with a signature giant rearspoiler which adorned theroof.Itranuntil2006andorig-inally stood for Hi-rider Revo-lutionary Vehicle, accordingto Honda records.

Fast forward to now andthe HR-V name lives again onan all-new vehicle based onthe clever Jazz. Size-wise theHR-V is somewhere betweena Qashqai and Juke and isavailable only in 2WD in theUK, with prices from £18,495to £25,425.

Honda plays a cleve rtrick also used widely by Al-fa Romeo in ‘hiding’ the reardoor handle, making the ve-hicle look more like a three-door coupe in side profile. Tosave you hunting around, it’sdisguised inthetopof therearwindow frame, which caughtoutplentyofpeopleduringmytime with the car.

Gimmick-free and robust, the HR-V adds solidity and re-liability to an overcrowdedSUV market, with a surpris-ing amount of interior spacepacked into a compact foot-print and plenty of luggageversatility.

In terms of technology, there’s nothing to be afraidof when operating the logicalandclearinfotainmentsystembased on touchscreen opera-tion. It’s user friendly and thescreen is thoughtfully angledtowards the driver, as are sur-rounding touch-sensitive ar-eas.

On-board safety equip-ment includes an innovativesystem which combines traf-fic sign recognition with aspeed limiter to always keepyouontherightsideofthelaw.

Chunky and muscular, with a dramatic swept backscreen and roofline, the HR-VisplainlyfromtheHondafam-ily, identified by the horizon-tally linked headlamps andgrille.

Black cladding on wheelarches and sills adds extraprotection.

The interior, with its mixof hard and soft-touch sur-faces and ‘piano black’ gloss is

classyandbeautifullycrafted,withneatlypackagedworkingareas.

The only minor disadvan-tage is the slabby dashboard, whichwastesalotofspaceand

means the driver only sees asmall sliver of bonnet.

All-leather black sports-style seats are plush, comfort-able and supportive in all theright places.

Well subdued againstnoise, the refined 1.6 dieselmodel I tested offers decentperformance(0-62mphin10.5secs) and long-striding com-fort on major journeys, withthe benefit of nearly 70mpgoverall.

Car-like handling and awristy, slick six-speed man-ual gearbox make for somepleasurable driving and alloccupants praised the HR-V’scomfort,evenwithfouradultson board.

The icing on the cake isHonda’s excellent Magic Seat

system, which allows a one-touchdroptoflattenrearseatsandcreateasizeablelevelloadplatform,withpassengerfoot-wells also able to be utilised.

Very much different fromthe original, it’s good to wel-come back the HR-V name, which gives Honda more fire-power in a crucial market.

ROAD TEST: SSANGYONG KORANDO SPORTS EX

I’ve always wanted one ofthese, ever since seeing iconicpick-ups cruising the lengthand breadth of Texas. Those big boys hummed tothe tune of 5.0-litre petrol en-gines – air conditioning wasjust for cissies and they weredrivenelbowpermanentlyoutof window.

But I wouldn’t mind swap-ping theirs for one of these –the jaw-dropping SsangYongKorando Sports, which is notonly affordable but also eco-nomical and surprisingly re-fined.

The 4WD version I test-ed here ( £18,495) can tacklesome off-road work and keepyou safe in winter, but therange actually starts at£14,995, which takes somebeating.

If you need or just desire apick-up, this covered wagonshouldberightupyourstreet. It boasts a smart, durable and

detachablehardtopthatcosts£1,995 but will be worth eve-ry cent as it safely covers andprotects all goods in the rearpick-up section, as well as giv-ingthevehicleasporty‘estate’look.

Take a look at the Koran-do Sports in side profile andyou’ll see just how long thisvehicle really is – 4,990mm– more than 16ft 4ins in oldmeasurements.

The rear section splitswith a top-opening windowand bottom panel which foldsdown to add another coupleof feet of space for loadingand unloading. Both the pick-up cargo area and fold-downpanelarefittedwithpractical,hard-wearing ribbed flooringthat can be swept or hosedclean.

Hefty tie-down hooks anda spare wheel stashed underthe rear of the vehicle com-plete the picture.

That’s all what you wouldexpect from a day-to-dayworkhorse. What is surpris-ing is just how sophisticatedand well made the Korando is

Sussex’s young stars excite DavisSussex County Cricket Clubhead coach Mark Davis admitshe is excited about whatthe future holds with all thepromising young players at theclub.

Davis admits it has been aslightly-frustrating start tothe County ChampionshipDivision 2 season but wasbuoyed with the way Sussexbatted out the final day againstLeicestershire on Wednesdayas they recorded a thirdsuccessive draw.

He said: “It’s been a little bitof a frustrating start but therehave been a lot of changes,a few injuries and a few notavailable.

“But from our perspective,we’re looking to rebuild andare trying to get more of theyoung players involved.

“It was very pleasing to batout for the draw on Wednesdayand the way Chris Nash, RossTaylor and Ed Joyce all battedshowed a lot of character as it’snever easy to bat out a day.”

Ollie Robinson (aged 22),George Garton (19), Harry

Finch (21), Matt Machan (25),Luke Wells (25) and DannyBriggs (25) have all featured forSussex this season and Davissaid: “We’ve got to a stagenow where we need to get theyoung players in and see whatthey can do, as we’ve done a lotof patching up in years gone by.

“We know there are areaswe need to improve and we’lladdress that. However, theonly way the young playersare going to learn is by playingbut we also need the seniorplayers to step up, like Chris,Ross and Ed have done againstLeicestershire, as you can’thave a team full of youngsters– you still need experience.

“But I’m very excited aboutwhat they can do. The drawended up feeling like a winafterwards and we’ll take thatinto the game on Sunday now.”

Looking ahead to the matchaway to Derbyshire, Davis said:“The wickets have been prettygood so far and there havebeen a lot of big scores aroundthe country. Let’s wait and seewhat deck they prepare.”

Sussex captain Luke Wrightis set to miss the game ashe still needs more time torecover from a wrist injury.

Whitehawk Football Clubboss Pablo Asensio admits hisside still have belief despitedefeat in the first leg of theirNational League South play-off semi-final.

Hawks went down 2-1 athome to Ebbsfleet Unitedon Wednesday to leave themwith it all to do heading intoSunday’s second leg.

It could have been worse forAsensio’s side had Danny Millsnot struck eight minutes fromtime to give them some hope.

Despite the loss, Asensiosaw enough to believe his sidecan turn the tie around.

He said: “It was such adisappointing defeat becausewe were on top for most of thegame.

“They probably had threechances in the game and tooktwo of them. We had so manybut just did not make the mostof them.

“Myplayerswerewonderinghow they managed to lose thisgame in the changing roomafterwards.

“So many people weresaying we deserved to atleast draw this game but welost and now have to win thesecond leg. This is somethingwe believe we can do,though.”

It was the visitors who

went ahead against the run ofplay on the half-hour. A neatinterchange between DannyKedwell and Stuart Lewis sawthe latter slot United ahead.

Hawks’ hopes of promotionwere then dealt a huge blowas Kedwell fired in a free-kickafter the home side’s wall hadsplit with 16 minutes left.

But Mills popped up eightminutes from time to net whatcould well be a crucial goal asthe first leg ended in a 2-1defeat for Whitehawk.

Asensio wants his side tobook a place in this season’sfinal after faltering at thesame stage last campaign, butadmitted this season can beclassed a success even if theyfail to overcome their first-legdeficit.

He added: “Now we are in

the play-offs and just a goalbehind we obviously wantto reach the final and securepromotion.

“All of us were a little downafter the final whistle butthe way we played gives usconfidence that we can beatthem in the second leg.

“No matter what happens, this season can still be classedas a success. A few monthsago people were saying wecould get relegated and wouldstruggle to stay up.

“This team has great beliefand character, so to secure aplay-off place and be in witha chance of going up is anincredible achievement.

“Now we are here, we wantto win and I believe that wecan do that in the second leg ofthis game.”

We still have belief – Asensio

Imoved up to 20 wins on myrecord on April 1 and am nowlooking to challenge for majortitles later this year.

However, I can’t move on inmy career until I avenge the

solitary blemish on my record againstmy only conqueror – Ryan Toms.

Ideally, I want to rematch with Tomsnext because I feel like I’ve got to getthat done before I can really push on.I think he’s actually got a fight comingup so it might not work in my favour.

It was in October last year whendisaster struck and I lost for thefirst and only time in my four-and-a-half year-long career to the two-time Southern Area champion at theBrighton Metropole; a result thatcontinues to haunt me six monthson.

You could argue that I don’t deservea title shot ahead of him and that heshould come first.

Regardless, I need to set the recordstraight, and once I get that sorted thenI’m unbeaten again and got enoughexperience to march on to biggerfights.

I immediately bounced back fromthat defeat to beat Faheem Khan fora second time a few weeks later lastDecember; next came Slovakian

victim, Andrej Moravek, back inBrighton in February this year;followed up recently with a win overPolish opponent Adam Grabiec inApril in my 21st professional contestat the Tolworth Recreation Centre inSurrey.

I’m looking at fighting next inBrighton on June 17, although it’snot set just yet. I’ll hopefully getconfirmation this week.

I’m training hard at the momentwith my manager, Scott Welch. Wehave been working on getting back tothrowing lots of punches and pickingthe work rate right up.

I’m training three times a day tomake sure I’m ready for whatevercomes next.

There’s only eight weeks to go soshould have the tickets soon and youcan get them from me on my website oron Twitter.

James Wilson fires home Albion’s equaliser deep into injury-time against Derby County onMonday. The 1-1 draw extended Brighton’s unbeaten run in the Championship to 13 games, ahead of the promotion-decider at Middlesbrough tomorrow.

Bruno’s ready forpromotion shoot-outAlbion full-back Brunolooked ahead to Saturday’sChampionship promotionshoot-out at Middlesbroughand said: “This could be thebiggest game of my career.”

Brighton know a win intheir final game of the seasonwillseethemleapfrogsecond-placed Boro and secure a spotin the Premier League.

Heading into the clash,Middlesbrough need just adraw to go up in the secondautomatic promotion spot.It is a game of such high-value, with financial expertsreporting it could be worthin excess of £170million forwhoever achieves promotion.

And despite appearing inthe Champions League forValencia, while also turningout for Almeria in La Liga,Bruno believes this could behis biggest-ever one-off gamein football.

Bruno said: “It’s one of thebiggest games in my career, especially because I am oneof the captains of the team

and the responsibility is evenbigger.

“When you are youngerand playing this kind of gamemaybe everyone is lookingto another player, the mainone, but now it’s time theothers may look at playerslike myself to make that stepforward.”

Bruno, alongside team-mates Bobby Zamora,Anthony Knockaert, GordonGreer and Dale Stephensto name a few, have allexperienced promotion intheir careers, so he feels therewill be no added pressuregoing into Saturday’s crunchclash.

Bruno said: “A few otherguys have got promoted withother clubs, so everyone isready to play this game.

“The feeling is great, we hada really good training sessionyesterday and everybodywas so sharp and that is niceto see. It’s important to bein that place when you seethe pressure but everyone isready to hold it.”

Albion skipper GordonGreer is expected to returnin place of suspended centraldefender Lewis Dunk.

E lation or despair. It will be one orthe other come 2.30pm on Saturday, nothing in between.

Saturday’s match and promotioninto the Premier League is wortharound £200million to the winners,

while the losers will have to quickly lift themselvesfor the play-offs. It has been one of the mostexciting ever seasons to be a Seagulls fan, with a lotof memories that will last a lifetime. The 21-gameunbeaten start, Bobby Zamora’s first goal back in anAlbion shirt, the free-flowing football in the secondhalf of the season, the list goes on.

Promotion on Saturday would top all of that. Thegame is certainly one of the biggest-ever matchesin Albion’s history. It comes just over 19 years to theday when the Seagulls sealed their Football Leaguesurvival with a 1-1 draw at Hereford.

Nerves will be jangling come kick-off, with Albionknowing only all three points will do. The Seagullshave lost only once to their fellow teams in the topsix, 3-0 to Middlesbrough in December at the Amex, but have also only beaten one of those sides once aswell (Hull, 1-0 at home), with seven draws.

It is set to be a tense, cagey affair that may onlycome to life in the final quarter but there’s no doubtBrighton can go there and win. Whatever happens, all Albion fans will be immensley proud of ChrisHughton and his squad for what they’ve achievedthis season.

It will beelation or

despair at Boro

Brighton go into theirfinal game of the season atMiddlesbrough knowingwhat they have to do toachieve automatic promotionto the Premier League.

After James Wilson’s latestrike secured a 1-1 drawwith Derby on Bank HolidayMonday, Albion go intoSaturday’s clash tied on 88points with Aitor Karanka’sside, however the Teesideclub sit above the Seagulls insecond due to a superior goaldifference.

Chris Hughton and hisplayers head to the Riverside

Albion’s destiny is in theirown hands against BoroBoro v Brighton preview Stadium knowing that

only a win would see themguaranteed a place in thetop flight alongside Burnley, who secured their return tothe Premier League four daysago.

Any other result will meanAlbion have to try and achievepromotion via the play-offs,setting up a semi-final tiewith Sheffield Wednesday.

The trip to the Riversidewill no doubt be one of thetoughest games of the seasonwith what is at stake.

Jordan Rhodes is likelyto pose the biggest threatgoing forward for Boro, having started up front on

his own in recent matches. The 26-year old will go upagainst a Seagulls centre-back pairing who have yetto play alongside each other, with Lewis Dunk’s sendingoff against Derby, meaningGordon Greer will return toskipper the side and partnerConnor Goldson.

More than 2,000 fans areset to make the 600-mileround trip up north, and withthousands more set to tune into the game around the globe, tomorrow’s game is no doubtone of the most anticipated inthe club’s recent history.

S o this is it. A finalshowdown at the endof the season, staged atmaximum inconvenienceto the Brighton fans; a setof supporters who have

already had to make the longest journeyon the road in the Championship to seetheir team play.

If social media is anything to goby, I’m going to buy shares in WD40,because it’s pretty evident most peoplehave a ‘squeaky bum’. This match isbeing billed as ‘the most importantmatch in Brighton’s history’, especiallyby people who have no idea of Brighton’shistory.

If it’s importance you’re after, lookno further than May 3, 1997, when theAlbion’s very existence was on the line. Those who were there will tell you that, while we might be tense and nervyabout this Saturday’s match, this isabout excitement and glory, 1997 wasabout our mere survival. The tensionnow is nothing compared to whatcould have been our final-ever gamewas like. Have you ever seen grownmen cry at half-time? People too numbwith fear for their club? People havingto contemplate life without their ownfootball team? The Albion had nosafety net then. And this was just thebeginning of the battle.

But that was then. Win, lose ordraw this Saturday, 2015/16 has beena sensational season, way more thananyone associated with the club wasexpecting, and I lay all – yes, all – of thecredit at Chris Hughton’s feet. He is aman – in public at least – of calmness, serenity and professionalism. Pick acrisis, he’s your man for it. Yet he isalso someone who neither over-praisesnor over-criticises, making him theconsumate diplomat.

Even then, he’ll tell you he hasn’tfinished building his squad. It may notbe fanciful at all to think that this wasintended to be a consolidation year;a season to build the platform for apromotion push next year. The playersthough, have responded amazingly well,

some arguably having their best-everseason.

There is hardly a player who hasregressed, and most who were herelast season have improved in leapsand bounds. Again, this would notbe possible without Chris Hughton’sleadership, drive and authority.

All our hopes and wishes go with thelads this weekend. I shouldn’t reallytalk about ‘well, there’s always the play-offs...’, but to those clueless enoughto believe this is our most importantmatch ever, well, there’s always the play-offs.

So whatever happens, Ady and I willbe jettisoning our usual radio slot thisSaturday for a two-hour Albion RoarSpecial on Sunday at 11am-1pm on RadioReverb 97.2FM. We’ll be having a varietyof guests on, some music and hopefullysome fun. Together.

L ast game of the season.A trip to Middlesbrough.Nothing on the game. Eh?Yes that was last seasonbut once again the fixturecomputer has thrown up

another long trip to the North East butthis time everything is on the line.

The wave of support for the Seagullshas turned into a tsunami in Sussex asthey target the one final win that willdeliver promotion.

It is a simple shoot-out. In one sense. However, in another it isn’t. The loserswill be hurt but not out of it completely.

Of course teams, clubs and mostfans wouldn’t want to go through thetorment of the play-offs but sometimesit can bring ecstasy.

At Wembley on May 28, it really is ‘usor them’. I’ve said all along I felt this wasthe Albion’s year, the Albion’s turn, theAlbion’s right.

A victory at the Riverside may be atough assignment but Chris Hughton’steam should not fear the play-offs. Yes,

there are good teams. Yes, the leagueresults are irrelevant but they are stillunbeaten in their past 13 and have wonfive out of the past six.

The squad are healthy bar a fewlong-term absentees. They remainthe outsiders for the final automaticpromotion place but that would changein the play-offs. And quite rightly.

The defeats to Palace and Derby arein the past and wholly irrelevant to anypossible campaign this year.

All that remains is to wish the teamwell. I hope the fans have a great day nomatter what the result is.

Glory may or may not beckon, but ifthey have to wait until the end of themonth, so be it. It would still be veryspecial.
