QR = Quick ResponseQR codes are those little black and white squares you see tucked into the corner of magazine ads, signs, buildings, business cards and product packaging. These powerful little two-dimensional barcodes were developed in Japan in 1994 to track auto parts in factories. However, with the spread of smartphones and scanner applications, QR codes are popping up everywhere.

Although QR codes are commonly used in marketing and advertising campaigns, they are beginning to appear in advocacy campaigns as well. A QR code was included in a large billboard in Times Square promoting Internet Week 2010. A political candidate running for office in Washington, D.C., incorporated QR codes into his campaign signs. And then there’s Starbucks: If you purchase a coffee mug that supports (RED)™, you can scan the QR code on the mug to hear a heartwarming story about a man who benefited from the life-saving HIV drugs that (RED) provides and Starbucks funds.

QR codes are everywhere because they are a simple way for marketers to link print and Web channels and to engage customers. But are they something you should be integrating into your marketing campaign?

Time to jump on the bandwagon?Ask yourself a few basic questions:

• Do you want to turn a static marketing campaign into an interactive experience?

• Would you like to tie tangible objects in the real world to online content anywhere and anytime?

• Are you looking for ways to quickly point people to the Web when they are most likely to be interested in learning more about your offering?

Even if you answered yes to all of the above questions, you also need to take a look at your audience.

For starters, people need to actually know what a QR code is in order to use it, so think about your audience and their level of tech awareness. In addition, people need smartphones with the scanning software that can read a QR code.

As with traditional direct marketing, your marketing will be most successful when the consumer’s experience aligns with expectations. A QR code ought to lead to a very specific mobile site that answers immediate questions, shows a brief video or creates some fun for the user.

Six thousand students … each with a story Taylor takes pride in serving its customers with superior technology and decades of industry know-how to ensure that they will always experience printing without the pressure. Recently one of Taylor’s companies produced Bradley University’s 2010 Viewbook, which included 6,000 students — each with a story. And each had a QR code to take the reader to a site where they learned more about the student.

Mobile is not a single medium or solely a response channel — it is becoming the way most of us will engage with brands. QR codes are an interesting tool: use them in a way that is unique and makes sense for your customer’s behavior. The easier you make it for

your target audience to find you, to learn more about your products and services and to respond to your offers on mobile devices, the better prepared you will be for the future.

What allows marketers to find consumers wherever they are and, in turn, to be available wherever consumers look? Mobile marketing, and by extension, QR codes.

Share quick and simple information or instructions with a user. The code can link to a YouTube video, Facebook page or your website.

Offer a special or bonus deal in your print with a QR code.

Encourage customers and prospects to sign up for your mailing list. Engage customers with an appealing print piece and use a QR code to link them to an easy online sign-up for a newsletter or other communications.

Make it easy to order products or buy tickets to an event — just make sure you are connecting the user to an app/site where purchasing through a smartphone is easy.

Did That Just Happen? AR – Augmented RealityTaylor can help bring direct mail and print to life with the next generation of Tags/2D codes and images. Augmented Reality can add 3D objects and animation to printed products when held in front of a Web camera or smart phone.

• For a demonstration, visit: www.taylorar.com

Other Exciting CapabilitiesAsk us about the other interactive options like…

• PURLs • Snap Tags • RFID • Digital Watermarks • Decoders

A Quick and Easy Response 2D Barcode TechnologyMobile device usage is exploding; interfacing direct mail with smartphones was a logical step. Taylor has the ability to use a variety of applications including 2D barcode readers. These codes can be printed on

business cards, letterheads, mailers, postcards, and other corporate identity products. When scanned with a mobile device, it will launch a URL, a Personal URL (PURL), a YouTube video or anywhere your imagination takes you!

From Fist-Bump to Phone-Bump NFC TechnologyNear Field Communication (NFC) is the latest wave. Instead of scanning a barcode for information, the NFC-enabled chip works simply by tapping the card or stationery to your NFC enabled mobile device. It allows the owner of the card to transfer their contact details and additional rich data to a smartphone simply by holding the card near an NFC-enabled phone.

When Internet marketing was still in its infancy, many pundits predicted online marketing would eventually spell the demise of print and direct mail. They were wrong! Direct mail and print not only remain viable, their ROI continues to rise and outpace email. Corporate marketers wanting to reach customers and prospects, can’t afford to ignore direct mail and print as they continue to examine the trends, explore opportunities and make the most of them. Taylor presents many ways to “bring your print to life” allowing your customers to interact with your marketing message.
