Project Humanitarian Day in The House of Charity with Partnership with Islamic Relief provided groceries, clothing, furniture, toys and school supplies to 110 evacuee families. The House of Charity also assisted families in locating low-cost or free primary care medical care.

The families served by the House of Charity are considered low-income families, many of whom had no employment or health care insurance at the time. The House of Charity provided transpor-tation to and from a SW Houston community medical clinic for low-cost or free health car.

Medical Missions

Since 1996 distinguished health professionals have come together to ready themselves for journeys into foreign lands. Motivated only by one objective - to help those in dire need of medical attention and aid - the team faces many challenges adjusting and helping the large masses in a short amount of time but from that experience also comes much joy to be remembered. All missions proved successful in numbers of children healed. But the true success was the emotional impact that these willing professionals had on the lives of their patients.

Our Medical Mission around the globe is dedicated to Mr. Bahadurali Kajani. In memory of his generosity, love, and wisdom. He left us too quickly and we will

surely miss him here at the House of Charity.

The House of Charity

2007 was a year of successes and challenges internationally for House of Charity. There were many cases of cleft lip & palate, severe burns and amputations. There was special concentration on cleft lip cases this year, bringing hundreds of smiles to many families. To help these children container based medical shipments were sent along with the mission team. Many children presented astonishing incidents and the absence of their accommodation in society for them. Most years result in about 600 cases dealt with, treated successfully, and only a handful usually in dire need to be brought to U.S. In the last year alone over 1000 patients were operated on for treatment. Some children had burn injuries since they were infants other had electric injuries. One child had even lost his nose to a traumatic electric wiring accident. Other children were born with deformities such as cleft lip & palate. Thanks to the medical mission team for treating many cases and training the doctors and nurses in the hospitals !

As salaamu alaikum , Muhango Nalo Allah Rakhi Aahi ( My name is Allah Rakhi) One day when my mom was pregnant with me, she looked up into the darkening sky and realized there was a solar eclipse. Later, when I was born my face was not like my sisters’ face. I had a hole in my lips and my palates. My mom and my dad said it was because of the eclipse. … that I was different. All my friends and relatives thought that I was ugly. Deep inside my heart I had this wish...I wanted to look like my sis-ters. For hours I would keep my lips squeezed together to look normal but it did not work. Luckily, God felt my pain and heard my prayers and there came The House of Charity team to our town Jacobabad, Pakistan to perform free surgeries. After 6 long years I look as pretty as my sisters, I am thrilled! I still can not believe that I look normal. Thank you for helping me and all the other children who were like me. Since 1996, The House of Charity has housed the children who are going through treatment in Houston & surrounding areas in apartments, hotel rooms and volunteers’ homes. In July of 2002 the board of directors of The House of Charity decided to move forward with its plan of purchasing a home that would be a permanent location to house these children. We searched Houston for the perfect location and found 2 duplexes in West Houston. And The House of Charity Healing Home was born. The Healing Home was inaugurated by Dr. Robert McCauley, Chief of Plastic & Recon-structive Surgery, Shriners Hospital, Galveston, TX.

The Healing Home is more than just a place to stay for these children. We are providing a safe and comfortable environment for these children to not only heal physically but also heal the mental wounds they have received from a life of special challenges, neglect and ridicule. We are helping them grow confident and self reliant by teaching them the necessary skills to sur-vive in this world.

The most beautiful part about the Healing Home is that it brings children from different areas and backgrounds together to come and live under one roof, just like a family. The home can accommodate 18 children at a time, who are under the constant care and supervision of a registered nurse and dedicated volunteers. The House of Charity Healing Home is a total care and development Center. Convalescences, Physical, and emotional healing, recreation, educational and schooling, are also provided under its roof in family oriented environment. The results are amazing as the children heal fast and their personalities bloom as their self confidence and self esteem blossoms and develop. They learn to live for today and tomorrow, no longer overwhelmed by their torturous past.

We are proud of our Healing Home!

By: Laurie Johnson HPR-KUFH 88.7 FM

The House of Charity in Houston provides free surgeries and medical care to nearly 800 children a year. As Houston Public Radio's Laurie Johnson reports, the "House of Charity" brings children from around the world to Houston to re-ceive the highest quality medical care. The House of Charity is nearly hidden at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in West Houston. From the outside, it's nothing remarkable -- just a two-story house with tan siding. But step inside the courtyard and you feel almost as though you're stepping into another country. Bright birds are singing in a large cage in the corner. The walls are painted purple, green, turquoise and yellow. And paper lanterns and streamers are festooned across the rafters. they can house as many as 20 children at a time for medical care and accommodation. The children suffer from cleft lip and palate, amputations, and some of the most extreme electrical and acid burns. Fourteen-year-old Azima is from Paki-stan. She is a quadruple amputee -no hands, no feet. This is her third trip to the U.S. to receive medical care & prosthetics. "I really like it here and I've got my new prosthesis. And everyone is so good and you know I get my free treat-ment. It's just so good for me and the people are so loving and caring. And I even have extra activities to do here and i t ' s v e r y g o o d . " Azima has been here for three months already, going through rehab and learning how to use her new prosthetic hands and feet. Some of the patients end up staying here as long as two years.
